Starting 20 minutes after this post, they're removing the geoblock on our 24-hour news channel so you can watch the Australian state of Queensland (same one that got flood-fucked) get FUCKED by a Cat 5 cyclone with 300km/h winds and storm surge. Watch here: http://www.abc.net.au/news/abcnews24/Live cyclone weather updates: http://www.bom.gov.au/cyclone/

No lie.

It's looking really grim.
Storm surge 7 METERS above the highest high water mark?! Jesus.
Also, can I ask what is with the sign language dude on all communications? Is that common or only for emergencies?

Katrina's storm surge was a bit higher at 8 metres and Katrina was twice as wide, but Yasi (300km/h) has recorded stronger winds than Katrina (280km/h). Comparison graphic: http://www.abc.net.au/news/infographics/cyclone-season-2010-2011/comparison.htmNASA took a good pic: http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/NaturalHazards/view.php?id=49066The sign language dude seems to be a Queensland state government thing for emergency announcements. It's a Labor (left) government in a traditionally conservative state and I guess they have accessibility policies for the disabled. Australian sign language (Auslan) is apparently quite different from US sign language, so he probably looks more animated than you'd normally get :)

The superimposed cyclone matches pretty well to the massive winter storm we're having in the US. I was supposed to be starting a 1900 miles drive today, but there's a 4 foot snowdrift across my driveway.
Sucks for you antipodeans, though.

Seems like we're back to crazy weather patterns simultaneously around the world. Like when Australia was having its worst floods ever, so was Brazil, Sri Lanka, etc.

We got a whopping 10cm of snow from that storm. 2/3 of the office stayed home for fear of dying in such treacherous conditions.

We got a lovely 8 inches of snow, but it has 2 half inch thick layers of sleet inside the pack so it took me over an hour to shovel 20 feet of sidewalk and the entrance to my driveway. On the topic, that cyclone looks nasty. Hope everyone got out in time.

From what I read, Cyclones are low pressure systems and snow storms are high pressure.. so it makes sense to have two gigantic storms or one really big one and several smaller ones.

My dad lives in Noosa and I haven't been able to raise the house by phone. Anyone know if that area got hit hard?
Edit: got through as I posted this, Peregian Beach has bad weather bu nothing serious, looks like it stayed up near Townsville. Hope everyone is ok!

I had to stop watching the video the sign language guy was making me laugh too hard. Maybe I am an insensitive bastard, deaf to the needs of others, but can't that shit be a bit in the background. Fuck all that is missing are some cheerleader pom poms. To those of you down under, be safe.

Big snowstorms tend to come when an arctic high gets pulled down into the warmer, wetter air. Normally they're about 200 miles across. This one was more than a thousand, the center of the high was over Montana while the edge stretched from New Mexico to New York. All the snow is at the edges, all we got up in Wyoming was bitter cold and high wind (-14 with a 30mph wind is nasty, exposed skin will go to frostbite in minutes). Not that this crowd really needs the reminder, but *yes*, both of these are intensified by "global warming", the energy that sucked so much cold air down is a function of heat. --Dave

Impressive. It forcibly relocated an entire city. An entire state. Into a state 1/10 its size :) And the apocalypse continues - now we have fires in Western Australia with 50+ homes destroyed so far.
