Necroing this* to mention that the long awaited 1.5 patch for Bf2 hit last week. It is nearly 2 gigs, and gives away some of the expansion maps for free. Seems to have spurred a ton of dormant players to come play again.

Stealing from the SA thread because it's pretty informative:

The 1.5 patch completely removes copy protection so you no longer need your CD/DVD in the drive!

Q: How do I update to the latest version of BF2 from a fresh install?
A:
> Install BF2
> Install Special Forces (if you have it and want it installed)
> Apply the 1.41 patch
> Apply the 1.5 patch

Apparently you can update to the final 1.5 from its betas. Remember 1.5 is NOT a full patch, it is just a massive incremental patch. You need BF2 updated to 1.41 or 1.5 beta before installing the final patch.

Q: How do I install the booster packs?
A: They are now free with the 1.5 patch so don't worry about that and you no longer need to install Highway Tampa since all the maps are included with the patch.

Q: I am using a mod should I update to 1.5?
A: Check the mod's website to see if this latest patch is supported.

Q: Is widescreen supported?
A: Yes. However HUD elements are not scaled correctly for widescreen (so they appear stretched and ugly) but your ingame field of view will be displayed correctly.

Q: Punkbuster keeps kicking me! What do I do?
A: 1. Go to the Punkbuster BF2 page and download the client files, here: http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=dl-bf2.php
2. Open up BF2 and join an online server with punkbuster enabled.
3. Press Tilde " ` " (the key to the left on the number 1)
4. Enter these lines in the console:

Code:
pb_sleep 500
pb_security 0
pb_writecfg

5. If you have a firewall check that PnkBstr A AND PnkBstr B are on the exceptions list. If you are using Vista/Win7 make sure they are on the UAC exception list.

Q: I changed some hardware/software setting and now when I load up BF2 it kicks me back to desktop!
A: 1. Go to your Battlefield 2 profiles folders and delete the video.con file for your profile and the default profile
Windows XP: Desktop > My Documents > Battlefield 2 > Profiles
Vista: Desktop > User > Documents > Battlefield 2 > Profiles

If that doesn't work then you should try deleting the entire Battlefield 2 folder in documents.

Q: I have no terrain OR terrain is a solid colour OR I get a weird black shroud in certain parts of the map.
A: Change your terrain detail to medium or high.

Q: When I alt+tab into the game I get a blank screen.
A: This is a known issue if you are running anti-aliasing. You can switch off anti alaising or

      * Download this file: http://www.battle.no/?section=download&get=140
      * Extract it into your Battlefield 2 install directory (you must have v1.50 installed already)
      * When prompted accept that you want to over write the existing file
      * In My Documents go to Battlefield 2\mods\bf2 and delete the cache directory
      * Run BF2 as normal

Applying the hotfix may give you a PB kick. Evenbalance should sort it out soon though.

Q: How do I skip intro movies?
A: Enter the "+restart" switch for your BF2 shortcut
E.g.: "C:\Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +restart

Q: How do I auto login?
A: Use the "+playerName xxx" and "+playerPassword yyy" switches
E.g.: "C:\Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +playerName DogMaN +playerPassword Banana1

I've read that the exploiters are out in full force again with this patch, but are easier to ban if you're on a server with good mods. Oh, how I miss the APC of doooooooom.

Whatever you do, do NOT cancel the patch before it's finished. If you do, you'll have to uninstall and start the fuck over from the get-go, because it will think the patch is installed even though it isn't. This was about a 1-hour process for me last night, but I finally got patched and played one game before going to bed. The new map is cool. A Chinese map with tons of fog, making the sniping much harder.

You'd think they could have hired a middle school kid to write a new multiplayer interface sometime in the past 4 years. Or maybe a chimp. Anything would be an improvement.

It wouldn't be a DICE game if the pre-game interfaces weren't incredibly shitty!

Been having fun with this. Decided to really try to learn to fly, since there are some badges/ribbons I haven't earned, and most of them deal with flying. Installed my old Saitek Cyborg 3d Gold, and Vista recognized it just fine. Calibrated it and then fired up Bf2. Set up the joystick there and started a server so I could fly it peace. Kept crashing- the game wouldn't recognize the X and Y axes. Z axis worked, and all the buttons worked, but it was pretty tough to fly without being able to climb. dive, or roll  Ohhhhh, I see.

Recalibrated in both Vista and Bf2 several times- same result. Google search showed that some people were having trouble with the joystick, but all of those were under XP and were several years old. Finally posted in the SA BF2 thread and asked if anyone had a joystick recommendation- I thought maybe it was faulty. Soon after that I stumbled onto the problem: the 1.5 patch added Falcon support, which doesn't play well with other joysticks. The workaround is to delete any/all Falcon entries, save, then save all the joystick commands in the secondary slot (primary won't work). After all this I could finally fly.

Unfortunately I am 4 years behind the curve and getting my ass handed to me. At least I am accruing the time flown stat while I die. I have reinstalled Xfire, so if anyone wants to find me playing check Xfire or Steam.
