A friend of mine who just got it on X360 can't stop raving about it,but I heard of badly optimised PC Port that made me think twice. Have they patched this problem yet? And does it run well on 8600GT?

It ran relatively well on my Q6600 8800GTX 4gig ram.  There was no hitching that I can think of.  The 8800gtx is fairly similar to the 8600, from what I remember.

The real problem is that the game is a boring pos.  Seriously.  I didn't believe these guys when they were complaining about how boring it was.  So I dropped $50, played a few hours and then it sat there on my desktop for 8 weeks untouched.  I recently uninstalled, realizing I'm not going to play it.  Rockstar sure can sell a game, next time they better make it interesting.

EDIT:  My other issue with it is the requirement to log into GFWL every single time you want to play the game.  It takes roughly three full minutes to simply get into the game.

No, the 8800gtx is light years ahead of a 8600gt in performance. From what I hear tho GTA4 is a killer on CPU's. Read the steam community forums and they will probably have some good details on the current state of the game. Sidenote, don't even look at the other sandbox PC port (Saints Row 2), the port is even worse.

I do have a 8800gtx but only have an e6600 c2d for a cpu, recently upgraded to 3GB of ram. Game runs like a champ. Not sure why people think it's not fun, I'm enjoying the hell out of it. Doesn't take me three minutes to get into the game, maybe two, but it's not GFWL's fault, it's the non-skippable logo screens - even my fiancee was bitching about them. I'm always logged into GFWL before they're done playing. Fallout 3 was actually worse for having to wait for GFWL, and that was only maybe 30 seconds.

Pro tip - turn off your cell phone as much as possible. Pro tip 2 - read the official forum, they list where to set the pc graphic options to mirror what each console would give you, then tweak up from there as needed. I don't need it to run at top options, game looks great and all the previous GTAs looked like ass, it's about the gameplay imo.

GTA4 runs so well, after hearing all the doom and gloom, that I'm even considering Saint's Row 2 for the pc. I forget that most of the bitching is about folks with higher resolution monitors. 720p ftw.

If you like the GTA formula and don't expect the game to fellate you, I highly recommend it.

I submit that you will have to like the GTA formula a great deal.  It is inferior to San Andreas and/or Vice City in every way other than graphically, and even then I mean from a technical perspective rather than art direction.

Why am I homeless?  Why do all you motherfuckers need homes is the real question.

I agree with this.  There are some parts of it I really liked, but it just didn't suck me in the way that the previous games have.

Look for threads on other boards about it. When I went poking around I found dozens of optimization threads. You could probably run it at 360 levels anyway. Most of the people having graphics problems are trying to run at higher settings and resolutions.

We are talking about PC versions here. I'm withholding judgement on SR2 until I see it running smoothly on my PC.

Are you playing the PC version? I'm currently playing it on my 360 and I have to say the new DLC patch has really fscked up the stability of the game. I'm getting atleast 1-2 lockups a night now(friend I'm playing with co-op is experiencing the exact same).
