F13 Musical Collaboration, Take 1

Okay, musicians. Here's the plan. Listen to the .mp3 that I upload, play along, and record something complimentary. Record your part in a seperate file, upload it, and everyone will be able to mix the different parts as they choose.

If you don't have a decent editor, there's a program called Audacity, an open source program. It's what I use.  http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Here's my uke part. I recorded it on a crappy mic, with cats and dogs running around my feet. I recorded it so many times that it got frustrating, and so here's a not-top-of-the-line track. edit: To make it a little easier on your ears, I'm playing C, G, F.

edit 2: Looking around on the net, there's a few collaboration programs out there. Anyone have an experience with them, and would they be useful in this capacity?

I don't have the equipment to correctly monitor your beats at the moment, so I screwed up. I'll try something a little more basic/less polyphonic another time maybe.


Since you were using a Uke, I went for melody that was equally goofy and cute. It almost worked out.

Hey, Stray, you've really got to upload that track to the kompoz page. You can upload all the tracks individually there, and then we can mix them. Sounds cool though, dude!

Also, I think my tempo varies a bit in that recording, so I'm going to redo it tomorrow.

I think I'll also work up something with either my harmonica or some kind of drummage. The beauty is that since it all is uploaded to individual tracks, people can pick and choose what they like and mix it themselves and so on.

The first thing that popped into my head was a melody for steel drum. it fits with the wonky tonality of the uke.

hand bassed procussion, nothing too heavy.

I'm recoding  little ditties into my q for laterr, but I don't know if I'll have time tonight. I've got a Soccer team to coach and then it's MLS thursday. Maybe later tonight.

I tried playing it on the guitar, I really did. Bottom line is that I'm terrible on the guitar. Here's the beauty of the kompoz site, though. I'll rerecord that my uke part, and someone can record the same thing with guitar and we can upload the two tracks separately. Then, once we decide to mix up what we've got, we can make different versions.

And then the producer fades someone's part out of the mix and angers said musician about their part being mixed out once the record is released!  I can see band drama already!  ;-)

And I suck so bad at playing I'm not even going to attempt it.  My play style is just not compatible with many other people's.

Heh. Neither is mine. It's not like I play Hawaiian slide guitar fulltime or anything (actually that should be obvious from my clip).

I ran through it a few times.  I have a few nifty ideas to toss in there, but somehow going for extra distortion and chorus just may not be what people have in mind ;-)

Try not to think hawaii when you think ukulele. I can churn out some mean blues on this thing, ya know. In fact, when I was thinking of additional parts in my head, it hadn't occurred to me that we might do some slidin' in there.

Furthermore, I went out and bought a pickup and a cheap amp today, so stand by for some (hopefully) cool effects.

It isn't easy to jam with a strumming Uku, man. It's hard to think of anything but slide guitar or yodeling to accompany it.


I'd say that if you can play blues on a Ukulele though, then you shouldn't have any problem on a guitar.

The problem I run into on a guitar is barre chords. My hands just don't work that way. But hey, I've got an idea. You give us the basics via guitar and I'll jam with you. Also, use the kompoz site for easy organizing.

I submitted a couple of things. I took the uke and trimmed it down to an 8 bar loop. I also added a little hand based percussion drum loop.

102.5 bpm. For those slaves to the metronome.

It's a shaker, with a guiro, snare and a resampled woodblock ascting as the bass beat.

I've got a a couple of ideas for modulation. but I'm going to need a little time to flesh them out.

It's tough, because the chord on one is coming in a shade before the beat. I tried playing with it, but it got really really vanilla whitebread special in a hurry.

As such I kept it with that slight syncopation on the uke. it works better that way, IMO. it's rougher, a little more raw, but nobody is expecting  crimson style synchronization  from a uke and hand percussion.

Bah, stick with the uke. That was a cool piece to base off of (engrish am hard). I've already got a couple ideas, just lacking the time to throw them down coherently (remember it's cinco de mayo weekend, I'll be out of town most of it). I was even thinking of going up to my parent's house (where my drums are in storage  ) and seeing about laying down a drum track to it.

I haven't played drums in years, and I only have the SM58 to work with, but for this it might suffice.

I'm posting so you know that I haven't given up on this. I'm messing around a bit with my guitar to see what I can add. Also, I play on Friday nights with a group of friends, and I played that little tune with a fiddle player and another guy on guitar. I didn't think it was a very country tune, but we sure turned it into one and it was awwwesome.
