For those who haven't seen what Ryzom is about, or if you just want to watch a reasonably put together video of a live event. watch thisWarning doesn't have you dashing for the volume control to silence the noise, therefore the kids might not enjoy it.

That is very cool. There are very few open source and freely available MMO engines and toolkits that have been used in commercially released products.
*edit* this should probably be reposted in the Game Dev forum, as I'm sure a lot of people there would love this.

I'd play around with a suite of stuff just like I did in the '90s making MUDs. It'll be interesting when the release tools to develop content with that are free which is what they're doing according to that link.

I think the only content you can't create freely are 3d models/animations. It looks like all the tools are there for world building, quest building, etc..

Hmmmm. Maybe if I get bored this weekend I'll attempt to fail with this stuff.
I have no idea how to get any of it running. Should be entertaining.

If you haven't found it, the Wiki is here, which seems to have some (not a lot) information on getting things setup and the basics for how the tools work.

From that announcement If you want to run your own server for the game, you have the software to do that, but you won't really have any world data—information about geography, special places, characters, quests, items, and so on—to run it with. Winch Gate Properties, the company that currently holds the copyright for all game materials and runs the official server, has decided not to release that data, to avoid causing disruption for their current player community. People who want to run their own server will need to develop their own world to do so—only a small test world comes with the code.
Unfortunately, that development can't be done with free software, because most of the world creation process depends on proprietary 3-D modeling software. Work is already underway to eliminate those dependencies and use free software alternatives like Blender. This is the next big task that needs to be done to make Ryzom even more useful to the free software community, so if you'd like to help, please see the project page for more information. In the meantime, the server code may be adapted for other games. So what excactly COULD you do with this?

Art to replace my programmer art box-man with in side projects? Even better, animations. :) Having some dated, but nice looking models available to build small projects with is something that should help programmers quite a bit. More importantly, this is quite a bit of art that all has the same style, something that can be tough to achieve if you're getting models here and there from the various sites on the web. 24 minutes remaining on my download of the whole thing... :) (Sadly, the preview site does not provide previews of the max model files it seems, just the textures.)

I think you just found your platform for that never ware you were, not making. Sadly, it's wildly unsuitable for what I want to do. But considering I haven't even made the freaking discussion forum work yet....
