I just finished re-watching this with my Dad a few months ago.

http://www.amazon.ca/Cosmos-Sagan-Screen-Collectors-Discs/dp/B000055ZOB

Filimed in the early 1980's, it doesnt matter how many science degrees I have I find this series educational, relevant and inspiring to this day.  It was this series that literally lit my mind on fire with the wonder of science and the promise of humanity.

It's Sagan's perspective as a an astronomer I find gives a very different view of human affairs.  He manages to put our differences in an almost trivial context, a distraction, from the greater challenges and beauty that waits for us "out there".

His analogies conveying the immensity of space and our small part of it, reminds me to this day there fundemanteal laws /discoveries that will change the very way we see the world, that have not yet been discovered.

I went through it about 10 years ago; it's very memorable.  I thought he presented the information in a way that still seems relevant even though it was 20 years old when I watched it.  Underneath the public/mainstream science, though, much has changed.  But it's still a good watch.

I used to sell telescopes - including all the high end stuff.  I would also host monthly star nights and talks about basic astronomy.  It never gets old when you explain to a person how immense the universe (as we see it) really is.  When that light bulb shines over their heads and then they look pretty lost, realizing how insignificant we are in the whole scheme.

I have the entire series (filmed in 79 in Los Angeles I believe) plus an extra episode that they did a few years later saved on my Tivo.

Dr. Sagan was one of my heroes and you are so right about his presentation style. Almost 30 years later and there is still nothing in the genre as compelling as Cosmos. If you have not read pale blue dot, then you need to.
