Yep, it is.   But, like I said it's still light years beyond what I was using.  I loaded up LOTR and was able to turn everything to 'high' and I can get more than 3fps in TF2 now. More than good enough for me.   Plus it's 1GB vid memory and the 9600s are all $100+ for the same memory.  The memory's important, as I use this PC not just for gaming working at home.  The new job uses 3d drafting software, so being able to keep a lot of model information resident in memory will save me headaches.

Newegg had a fantastic deal last week on a 9800GT for $80 ($70 after the mail-in rebate). I couldn't resist a deal that good. The 9800 is just butter compared to the 8600GTS I was using. I still can't run Empire: Total War at its full glory, but goddamn does it ever look good. And just the jump from the 8000 series to the 9000 series made LOTRO look stunningly crisp. Textures just snap so much more now.

Does that 3d software even use the GPU?

Not unless I need to render something, memory was the more important part which the old card had 512 at least.  I wanted a bit more and a gpu that would run HL2 at better than low settings and get 10fps doing that.  awesome, for real
