Whatever you choose, make sure game is simple enough to be mastered by 6 year old or you will be risking causing permanent aversion to genre.

When I was 6 Nintendo (specifically the NES) had been out for 2 years. Pretty sure I was playing Mega Man 2.
Don't baby that kid. If you do, he'll grow up with shit taste in games. He and the brother both need to have their face kicked in by games until they can buy their own. They'll thank you later, maybe.

My 6yr old daughter likes the Donkey Kong Country game for Wii, and some of the classics on the Wii like Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. She didn't like Twilight Princess, but has played the Skyward Sword demo at Target about 900 times. She's getting that for christmas, obviously. :)
She also went through a pretty intense phase of New Super Mario Bros and FFCC: Chocobo's dungeon, though the latter I'm not convinced she knows what she is doing.
Same kid plays Dungeon Defenders on PS3 with me and Minecraft/Terraria on PC, though. ymmv.

My sons are now 10 and 9. We started them out on the Lego series. Try Star Wars, Harry Potter, Batman, etc.
They love the lego series and still play the games now.
