wants a greif tittle

on: November 07, 2008, 10:04:04 AM

I loved the original. It was my first real FPS on a console, so I have a special "halo-esque" attachment to it. Pretty excited for this. I plan on playing it all weekend. Probably beating the game 2 or 3 times in Coop, and then playing some Horde mode.

Anyone else want in on the fun?

I'll take it for another spin with you. I put in about 3.5 hours last night in co-op, we were cruising through it pretty fast and only go about half way through. The graphics are amazing, set pieces huge, and environments gorgeous. The mechanics however are for the most part the exact same. I haven't touched multiplayer yet. Some of the criticism about the macho alpha male stuff holds true.. but come on it's gears of war, these guns have chainsaws on the ends of them.

I'm trying not to spoil anything here, but the graphics for the cutscene where you are "covered in blood" are stunning. I counted myself saying "whoah this is awesome" about 5-6 times last night. I have yet to use the meat shield mechanic, ride anything, or use the shield. There are some interesting new monsters, but normal mode felt kinda of sparse (in co-op) the first few chapters the locus go down easy but toughen up significantly when you get below the surface. Anytime we died and had to redo a section it was always very forgiving with how far back we had to restart.

There were a couple of instance where the textures and bump mapping popped in on the characters when starting a new area but the unreal engine does this weird thing that makes it more of a fade in then a pop in.

I'm having a blast with it and can't wait to finish work and get back at it.

Never mind gears. Try adding in almost any action movie from the past 30 or so years, which is clearly Gears' inspiration anyway.

Gears is *not* a FPS.

And I am apparently one of the few who found the first game generic and tiresome.

Since there's halotards, I guess that makes me a Geartard. Loved the first and so far am loving the sequel.

Call of Duty struck this weekend :)  Down loaded the beta test, CoD World at War, and it is sweeeeet!  Screw Gears, I'm going to go pre-order CoD: W@W (or CoD 5...).

I just picked it up and did some co-op campaign.  I've heard horde mode is really fun, but have yet to get to play it.  So far, I've enjoyed what I've done.  You aren't meant to take the dialog too seriously.

that wasn't my point, maybe you should have finished reading the original sentence. "...but come on it's gears of war, these guns have chainsaws on the ends of them."

And yet you defend Resistance 2 the sequel to what is quite possibly the most generic FPS on a next gen console...

I enjoy GoW enough. Played Horde mode with 4 friends last night, and it was a lot of fun.

Finished it last night, I don't think the "generic" applys to this one. But anyway, horde mode is the shit.

Yeah I played the hell out of it this weekend. It is quite a good game. The multiplayer is fixed up a bit too. Was at a lan party for that this weekend too. Too damn fun. I like this game. On another note I find the single player campaign shallow and pedantic. hahahah. No really though it is fun enough.

Hah. You clearly don't know Schild well enough. He used to have a GoW avatar.

Just finished the campaign in co-op and have done a little bit of multi.  Horde mode is fucking great like few things are - a friend and I have been 2-manning it on insane.  If anyone needs a horde buddy, shoot me an invite.

You clearly don't remember the avatar that well. Let me refresh your memory:

Do you see anything maybe "different" about that?

I see that it has twitch a different face. Still, I recall the GoW motif the most.

f13 staff used to do themed avatars, sometimes some of us still bring them back for holidays and f13's birthday and such. For this particular one, Fabricated suggested we put that face on various things. At the time, Gears of War was hyped up. I put the face on it as a sort of subtle mockery.

I also had a Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen GBA avatar. That doesn't mean I actually care about the game.

What is that face from?  It looks vaguely familiar but I can't place it.

Well, that explains why I can't place it.  I have no idea what that is.  I also don't want to know.
