Don't ask me how I hadn't heard about this. But I just finished Ender's Game and wiki'd up the stuff for the rest of the series since everyone else tells me to avoid it like the plague. Then I was like, hay, I should look up other stuff associated with Childhood's End (which is my favorite Sci-Fi novel - and I rarely (VERY RARELY) like Sci-Fi novels. And I came across this tidbit:

*Infinite Line's plot is based around Childhood's End.

Figuring it was a book, I clicked it. NOPE, WRONG.

The result is much more fucking awesome: You can click this, but the important bits are below.

Infinite Space is an upcoming science-fiction role-playing game developed by PlatinumGames for the Nintendo DS. It is planned for release in Japan and North America sometime in 2009. For a short period after it was announced, the game was referred to by the working title Infinite Line.[1]

So, it's now Infinite Space. I should submit a fix for the Childhood's End entry (har). Anyway:

Infinite Space will be based on the novella Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke. The plot is divided into two main storylines. One follows the life of a young crewman named Yuri who works to become a spaceship captain, and the other focuses on "very high-level, philosophical science fiction stuff." Through the course of the story, the player will discover humanity's role in the universe.[2][1]

Well, why is this interesting?

Platinum Games is formerly known as Seed. Seed is basically Clover. It is the home of:

*Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami
*Devil May Cry/Okami creator Hideki Kamiya
*Okami producer Atsushi Inaba

Along with countless other talented fuckers.

Basically, this DS game was made for me. I just wanted to share that with you all. Word.

Edit: As always, Sega's Marketing is shit. I fear the worst for the localization.

As long as it doesn't involve emaciated boys who've had hair dryer accidents wielding swords the size of fold-up picknick tables, it may be worth a gander.

I should get back to nature, too.  You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer.  Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached.  Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

Actually, Speaker for the Dead (the direct sequel to Ender's Game) is a required read, IMO. It's a much different novel in tone and style, but I like it better than Ender's Game.

You can safely avoid the other two in the series, along with the Bean parallel series though.

I agree that you can skip the Bean series, except for the first one.  It's basically Ender's Game from Bean's POV, which sounds bad, but actually works pretty good.  All the books after are rubbish though.

He starts getting a bit like Tom Clancy towards the end of the Bean series. It becomes really hard to separate the fiction from man's political and spiritual views.  And the recurring villain being used is really fucking dumb.

Very interesting. And it's an RPG too? Make your own ship, explore galaxies, hmm. It'll be interesting to see how they incorporate the themes of Childhood's End into the gameplay, or if it's just added as dialog and/or narrative.
