Hey, you're all master smart dudes with big brains. If I'm a level 35 dreeeney shaman and I wanna plan in advance for the time I hit 40 and get mail from instances and quests and shit, what am I looking to pick up along the way?

Then once I'm 40, is there some kind of gear advancement guide that gives info like "When you hit 42, pick up this weapon! then at 43, go into this instance and look for these gloves! then etc etc etc" or can you guys do that?

I'm enh specced and I like crits and pvp.

It's all fluff unless you're planning to stick to certain battleground lvl ranges. Everything will be obsolete once you've hit outlands so why bother. There's no 'raid this, raid that pre 60' that's worth the trouble of rerunning over and over to get the gear you need.

Lv 35? What spec are you?

I used the Cobalt Crusher from 30-42, Ravager from 42-44, and Morgraine's Might from 44 - until I bought two cheap 1H weapons off the AH and got with the dual wielding program.  So that was an AH purchase and two drops from Scarlet Monestary.  Thereafter it was cheap crap on the AH.  Occasionally I'd forget to train and spend talent points, the Shaman just didn't need it to keep chewing through mobs.

Just stay enhancement until you hit 41 then go either elemental or resto depending on if you like to kill things or like to live.  I like to kill things.  Later today I should ding 70 on my Shaman and then I'll be respeccing resto and sucking up ZA and badge loot until I can contribute meanginfully.

If you are levelling enhance, most of the best items for you all the way through to 70 are going to be leather.

Don't worry too much about going all mail right away.

I would suggest running the Warsong Gulch(wsg) battlegrounds(bg) at 38-39 for some of the PVP rewards - you can get a purple mail wrist armor that can bought and used at 40 for only 20 tokens and 621 honor, and you can also try to get the blue rings which have pretty ok stats.

For Arathi Basin(AB) you can aim for the trinket, which I find to be invaluable for both PVE and PVP at 30s-50s. In this level range, there's few better alternatives, and a 300+ physical damage absorb shield that makes spellcast uninterruptible while it holds is great for those aggroed adds and sudden gankings (pvp server) - what is even better is that it is on a very short timer of 3 min. Also available in AB rewards are blue mail waist and boots with decent stats.

Ultimately alot depends on how strong your faction is in your Batttlegroup in this bracket. If the allies are constantly being trashed in both bgs it might be too aggravating to lose through enough matches to get multiple items.

How fast are you leveling? I find unless I'm specifically setting up a character to stay at X level range to either help other people group for dungeons or a PvP Twink, that gear from like 1-50 is moot. If something is on the AH, hurrah! If not, /shrug.

What I would suggest (if you have the cash) is to start grabbing level 57-59 TBC BoE Greens "Of the Soldier" and "Of the Bandit" so you can have a full suit of that stuff once you hit 57. You'll probably wear most of that 'suit' of gear till 65ish or so.

Replace them with "Of the Sorcerer" and "Of the Invoker" if you decide to change to elemental.

the only thing worth getting would be a half decent blue weapon otherwise any shaman gear you get wont be very good shaman gear for itemization until 58

Scarlet Monastery has some good mail pieces (herod's shoulder, scarlet mail set). Sadly, those pieces are itemized better than most everything else until you get to level 58 and get access to BC zones. Like Chimpy said, don't be afraid of using leather post-40.

I'd go with dual wielding asap (level 41), it's a lot better damage. If you are lucky enough to get a slow mainhand and a slow offhand, put windfury on both; otherwise, put flametongue or frostbrand on the [fast] offhand and windfury on the [slow] mainhand. DW also has the advantage of being able to put on a shield at any time (like if you need to heal) and still do decent damage.

What they said.  Before outland, it just doesn't matter much.  Upgrade your weakest pieces with AH stuff when you have the money laying around, beyond that it doesn't matter.  You'll do fine in quest rewards, drops, and random AH gear.

As others have said, unless you pvp a lot then gear really doesn't seem to matter pre-70. My enhance shammy still had SM mail on at level 60  swamp poop

One suggestion though, learned from hard personal experience, when you get to Outland start collecting gear for all specs. Make sure you hit 70 with a full set of enhance, elemental and resto gear so that if you do decide to respec then you don't have to spend weeks re-gearing too! Even just quest reward and drop gear for each spec would be a great asset!

Any character I had, I just geared up purely from drops and quest rewards.  I might get the odd piece that is way behind, then I just hit the auctions for a cheap green upgrade.  Then, as mentioned before, once you hit 58 all your old world gear becomes instantly obsolete.  I saved every penny for my mounts.

This is my enhance shaman at 39, but I might have overdone it a bit since I'm staying at that level for awhile: http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Ursin&n=Wimgore

As others have said, unless you sticking in a BG, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I used my 29 gear pretty much all the way to the mid/high 30s to save for my enchants and stuff, and I didn't ever have too much trouble leveling up.
