Title: Some new spam

I have never seen this one before.

ATTN

On behalf of the Trustees and Executor of the estate of Late Eng.
Jurgen Krugger, I once again try to notify you as my earlier letter
was returned undelivered. I hereby attempt to reach you again by this
same email address on the WILL. I wish to notify you that late Jurgen
Krugger made you a beneficiary in his WILL. He left the sum of Thirty
Million, One Hundred Thousand Dollars (USD$30, 100.000.00)  to you in
the Codicil and last testament to his WILL.

This may sound strange and unbelievable to you, but it is real and
true. Being a widely travelled man, he said he met you sometime in the
past or simply you were nominated to him by one of his numerous
friends abroad who must have wished you good (I am not too sure).

According to him, this money is to support your humanitarian/medical
activities and to help the poor and the needy in our society. Please
if I reach you as I am hopeful, endeavour to get back to me as soon as
possible to enable me conclude my job. I hope to hear from you in no
distant time. I am sincerely sorry if you feel bothered or embarrassed
by this message.

Please copy and email me through the below email address:

It must be mistaken identity since I do not conduct humanitarian or medical activities.  Although I do have seven cats.

UK probably has laws against that sort of thing.  Might not be worth the effort of tracking down where to forward it to/file a complaint with but then again, could be worth a laugh.

At least they picked a law office for the address: http://www.faegre.co.uk/showlocation.aspx?Show=59  :awesome_for_real:  Sadly the one area of law they don't seem to handle is Estate law...

Heh, googling the phone number you can see it being used in scams back as far as 2008, so I guess it must not be easy to get a phone line being used to commit fraud disconnected in London.

The phone number isn't real as far as I can tell. London numbers generally start 0207 or 0209, when dialling international you remove the initial 0 and add +44. So it should be 44 207, not 44 702.

07024 037847 would be a mobile phone. Google tells me that it goes to a premium rate service (http://www.magrathea-telecom.co.uk/nongeographic.htm).

They can't.  I'm way too popular with British barristers.

Awesome. Someone thought the only difference between British and American lawyers was fancier names.

Title: Re: Some new spam
Post by: Cyrrex on October 05, 2009, 01:40:28 PM
Roger Fletcher Baker doesn't even sound like a real name.  Too may "er"s there.  I'd sooner think that was the last name of three distinct persons.  I'm probably wrong, maybe Brits like having silly names like that.

Post by: NowhereMan on October 05, 2009, 04:06:25 PM
Eh, it sounds kind of like a solicitor's firm, they're all pretty common surnames.

Though that did highlight the fact that this guy is not only claiming to be a barrister but also a managing partner in a solicitor's firm. Awesome.

It's a valid number exactly as it is, and numberingplans.com (http://www.numberingplans.com/?page=analysis&sub=phonenr) analysis of the number shows it's a UK personal phone number, with the carrier Magrathea Telecommunications Limited (http://www.magrathea-telecom.co.uk/). Also like was mentioned before the number shows linked to various different scams when doing a Google of the number, and that telephone provider is a VoIP company.

If it were me who received this email, I would be calling the phone provider and demanding this scammer be put permanently out of business, and they should do everything possible to disable a number involved with scams.

It doesn't sound too weird.  Tiggy Legge Bourke used to be the nanny for the royal brats.  The place names can be odd.  There's a Sluts Hole Lane in Norfolk and a Twatt in Orkney.

I received one spam a couple days ago that said a relative recommended me for a free teeth whitening. I'd never seen that before. Very cleverly crafted.

I use Thunderbird and I want to know what the fuck is up with spam filters. When I check "spam" on an email and then I receive another email exactly like the one I just marked as spam and it doesn't catch it. Bayesian filtering my ass.

It's a real postcode, a real name and a real law firm I guess scammers can use Google too (http://www.yell.com/b/Ronald+Fletcher+Baker-Solicitors-London-EC1V9DR-2827279/index.html).

Title: Re: Some new spam
Post by: Signe on October 06, 2009, 09:23:12 AM
But it's from a ROGER Fletcher Baker, not RONALD, which is the name of the firm.  Also, Ronald Fletcher Baker doesn't seem to be a real person at that firm and there's no Roger Baker, either.  All their email addresses are @rfblegal.co.uk

Title: Re: Some new spam
Post by: Reg on October 06, 2009, 10:46:07 AM
I bet they'd have more luck getting the scammer's phone number shut down being a law firm and all. I doubt they want their name dragged through the mud like this.

Title: Re: Some new spam

Ronald, Fletcher and Baker would be the surnames of the three top partners at that firm. And as I pointed out above the spammer is pretending to be a barrister AND to work at a solicitors' practice which isn't how the British system works. Hell barristers don't do that kind of legal work. I can only assume the spammer discovered barristers can use a title and thought it would make the whole thing seem more impressive.

London postcodes are slightly different to the rest of the UK. Also I'm pretty sure that fraudsters with a limited grasp of English aren't going to try and make puns based on reversed words with numeric substitution.

I used to live on Shagbark Court, so don't put too much into funny address names.

As for Thunderbird, that filter has never worked for shit as far as I have seen.  Before I switched to Gmail, I used POPFile (http://getpopfile.org/) which actually worked.  Furthermore, it satisfied my desire to screw around with the word database.  Gmail is so awesome at filtering spam, though, that I don't bother with anything else.

HP spam filters are pretty good.  What group are you going to work for?  I was legacy HP as part of EDS, but too many PMs and no certification means I'm now looking for a new job. :(  Sad, I liked working for HP.

Oops...?   :ye_gods:  I'm actually being brought in because HP has picked up The Coca-Cola Company as a client and there's a lot of :uhrr: going on with both parties.  BAU requires my entire team become HP, which will make us cost more.  I missed out on HP's 24,000+ layoff of EDS peoples, and the two 2009 pay cuts, so ... I'll try to sleep at night by telling myself I did not steal anyone's job.

Uh huh...  :cry2:  You just keep telling yourself that. :cry2:

Seriously though, what is it you do again?  If I'd heard, I'm not recalling it atm.  I'm a project manager and as my boss said when he told me, it came down to picking someone who had PMP certification and someone who didn't.  I didn't through my own damn fault.  I should have taken more advantage of the free online training but was an idiot.  If it applies to your position - use it and abuse it.  I'm kicking myself now that I'm looking and so many places want that PMP. :(

Nah, Yegolev is just willing to work for $1 and two bowls of rice a day.  I wouldn't feel to bad.

I might be, but the wife... she's high maintenance. :awesome_for_real:

Rhyssa, the thing I do for money is AIX (IBM UNIX) support.  Not really crap admin work, as the HP UNIX manager is finding out, but project work of the type that most people call in consultants for... although I do end up doing a lot of that since everyone else is an idiot... ahem.  Just this week, for example, I have worked on a SAP SCM/APO upgrade which is part of a conversion of the DB from Oracle to DB2 and to unicode at the same time; and worked on performing an offline backup of a 9TB database using EMC disk mirrors but doing a fake online to tape since there is a security prohibition on using a password file for remote authentica.... er.  Sorry.  And a bunch of other shit that is driving me nuts.  Open PMR to IBM, wherein I once again want to poke the guy's eyes out for knowing less than me and also being a doofus.  "What is using port 80?  ....  Oh I had to set it to external ..."  grrrr.  Sorry again.  I'm up to someone else's eyeballs in work.

My new boss has already told us that we are going to need to get lots of certs since that is how he keeps his people from being offshored and having their pay cut.  According to his typically-blunt-for-IT staff, it has worked.  I'm on board, being a corporate stooge and all.

I think PMs are getting it in the kneecaps all around.  I know Coke is dropping a few, one of which I know and was the PM who ran the New World of Coke project.  Maybe just anecdotal.

Title: Re: Some new spam
Post by: RhyssaFireheart on November 26, 2009, 12:11:00 AM
PMs got slammed with the EDS merger because that's what so many of them were.  And get those certs, especially since HP should pay for the training or take the online classes.  DOOOO EEETTTT!!  That was my biggest mistake and now I'm looking into getting WIA funds to get my certification and a few other classes if I can.

Title: Re: Some new spam
Post by: Yegolev on November 26, 2009, 10:54:04 AM
I have had at most two classes that pertained to my job over the past... forever.  I'm going to be all over the education and even the certs.  The certs because New Boss says it is vital, and the education because I'm tired of supporting things that I don't understand. :oh_i_see:

Title: Re: Some new spam
Post by: Ingmar on November 30, 2009, 01:57:06 PM
I am probably going to look into actual certs next year too. I miss the days of (non-Cisco) certs being a black mark on a resume.

Do it if at all possible.

I just started the app process for WIA funds in my county to see if I can get my PMP certification plus some other classes.  My biggest worry is that they want to know the husband's income as well and while he makes good money, that in no way covers all our bills and whatnot.  Besides, if I had a random $5k or so lying around, I wouldn't be applying for some government grant and dealing with the hassle so I could get certified.

1. Can you handle a financial project of exceeding US$ 4M ?
2. Can I give you this financial trust as a trustee/stake holder ?

If yes, get back to me as soon as Possible and if No your time reading this mail was well appreciated.

I especially like how this one is open to interpretation.

You should hook up these spammers and let them duke it out.   The only problem with my solution is that by some weird Darwinian selection we'll probably wind up some uber-scammer and cause the collapse of the global economy.

Greetings!
An investigation of your World of Warcraft account has found strong evidence that the account in question is being sold or traded. As you may not be aware of, this conflicts with Blizzard's EULA under section 4 Paragraph B which can be found here:
WoW -> Legal -> End User License Agreement
and Section 8 of the Terms of Use found here:
WoW -> Legal -> Terms of Use
The investigation will be continued by Blizzard administration to determine the action to be taken against your account. If your account is found violating the EULA and Terms of Use, your account can, and will be suspended/closed/or terminated.
In order to keep this from occurring, you should immediately verify that you are the original owner of the account.
To verify your identity please visit the following webpage:
<Don't click links in emails, children.>

Only Account Administration will be able to assist with account retrieval issues. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter, and your continued interest in World of Warcraft.

For more information, click herefor answers to Frequently Asked Questions or to contact the Blizzard Billing & Account Services team.

Account security is solely the responsibility of the accountholder. Please be advised that in the event of a compromised account, Blizzard representatives typically must lock the account. In these cases the Account Administration team will require faxed receipt of ID materials before releasing the account for play.

It's not clear in the text here, but the parts that look like a menu navigation are just text, not links.  I find this sloppy.  The one link does indeed point somewhere different, someplace called battlees.net which has a sufficiently-robust mockup of the actual site (as far as I know).  Finally, the email is missing any sort of graphic.  I give it a C+.

I haven't gotten any fake-Blizzard emails in a while, but I'm getting 3 or 4 every day about my Aion account. Being "investigatged", closed for lack of payment, click here to log in and speak to a representative, etc.

I wonder how many I'd get if I'd ever had an Aion account...

My spam folder is nothing but Aion, NCSoft and WoW phishing emails.  I get about 3 a day.

This is probably the most professional sounding one (at least it doesn't have "straight from China" formatting).  Funny thing is, Blizzard never sends you an email when you cancel billing. The links in the email send you off to god knows where.  The email they're using is actually blizzard@hotmail.

Hello--

This message is being sent to confirm that all credit card information will be removed from your World of Warcraft account, effectively cancelling its recurring subscription.  The account will not bill or renew any further unless new payment information (credit card or game card) is manually entered in.

The account will remain playable for the remaining time it has already paid for.  This account's current prepaid time will expire soon.

If you have not cancelled your subscription, you should check your account status as soon as possible, you can log into your Account Management page at this link, using your account name and password:

http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/account

At this time, Blizzard has no plans to delete or "expire" characters, even if an account is deactivated or cancelled.  This means that all of your characters and their progress will be retained on our servers.  Should you decide to return to World of Warcraft and reactivate your account, you will be able to pick up your characters again wherever you left off.

In the event you have any other billing questions or concerns, please feel free to contact our Billing & Account Services team for support.  You can reply to this email directly, or call 1-800-59-BLIZZARD (800-592-5499) for live phone support between 8am and 8pm Pacific Time.  Users in Australia should please call 800-041-378, if the standard 800 line does not work for them.

Why do they do that with the email address switcheroo anyway?  It just makes it even more fake-looking.  And if you're looking to trick helpless grannies out of their life savings, then your colleague should probably be named something like John Flangston, not some scary foreign sounding name like Galina Sosin.

So I sent my boys to track you down and they have carried out the necessary investigation needed for the operation on you, and they have done that but I told them not to kill you that I will like to contact you and see if your life is Important to you or not since their findings shows that you are innocent.

Maybe they'll try to kill me tomorrow, I still have a little hope.

That one is funny.  Though I do wonder why an assassin would choose an email address with "greatassassin" in it.

You should TOTALLY troll that guy back and post the results here.

Aren't support spam death threats to the FBI or law enforcement?

It's one thing to scam people, it's another to send active physical blackmail threats.

That sounds like a lot more fun than forwarding it to the FBI.

Maybe this weekend I'll find a picture of a badly beaten dead body and send it to him, saying that I caught his assassin snooping around and tortured him until they gave up his info.  I'm just not sure what crazy demands to make for me to not kill him.

Hello,
Please handle this personal. I am Mr. Rodney Smith. I am a banker by profession. During the 2010 auditing of our bank, I discovered an account that had been dormant for over 10 years. The account was worth $17.5 Million (Seventeen Million, Five Hundred Thousand United States Dollars). The account could not be traced to anybody.
Therefore the deal is not risky. Due to my position in the bank, I cannot handle this deal personally. Now I want to transfer this money to your account. It is a deal between me and you. I need your honest collaboration to transfer this money out from the country. I intend to invest part of my share in your country.
Read Attached Message and Reply Back Immediately.

Oh yeah, I'll get right on this one!  Can't be anything illegal at all!

You guys laugh now, but there are tons of people who fall for this shit...

There was a financial adviser who paid $1m from his clients to 419 scammers (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/10/19/aussie_419_victim/) posing as "the Reverend Sam Kukah", believing he would make $65m by allowing his account to be used for a transfer from Nigeria's "Presidential Payment Debt Reconciliation Committee".

Many people (as in the funny picture posted above) think they're after your bank account details. They're not. What they're after is payments they say are preliminary measures to grease the wheels, like fees and bribes to get the fictitious large amount through to you. They keep making up new obstacles requiring more and more financial input from the victim, who at first believes it's worth it because the large amount will eventually come through. Ultimately the victim becomes so financially committed they can't pull out, then keeps paying in the hope of a result, even if they suspect something may be wrong. The scammer keeps this going for as long as possible, never actually needing your bank account details, because you're willingly sending them money.

The part I don't understand is how a person wouldn't automatically be extremely suspicious of anything with the word "Nigeria" attached to it.  If the soccer team from Nigeria were to show up for the World Cup, I would be predisposed to assume they were fake soccer players.  Have these people never seen the internet?

Talk to anybody over the age of 60. See what kind of response you get to Nigerian spammers.

PS - Don't do that in the South, you may get Jim Crow law conversations.

Yes, they have...but a lot of them are the types that think if it's a document, if it's written somewhere (like on the internet) then it must be true.

Cannot even count the number of calls/emails we get from people involved in various scams, whether from the straight-up email spam, or from someone they've "met"...online.

This one struck me because it came to my F13-linked e-mail and was from "Signe Hove"

"How odd," I thought.  Oh, just spam, when I opened it.  (Nothing but plaintext.)

Hey! It is Signe.

I actually think that u are very attractive man and to convince you that I'm not kidding, Igonna attach some exclusive shots to the next letter, sounds better this time?)

The hotel Arriva Hotel informed us that the data of given credit card was not accepted

It could happen because of several reasons:

Expiration date - end - does the expiration date of the card finish until the date arrival registration?
The reasonable balance - did the card have enough money on the card for reservation?

I might have written about this elsewhere, but I heard recently from a guy in our IT department that there is one person on staff who routinely falls for almost all this kind of stuff, including the bad broken English spam, and has given up his/her password to phishers at least six times now. On the first three occasions this led to a pretty serious breach in the overall security of the network. They've basically sequestered this person's access off in some fashion, I dunno the particulars. The person in question has a Ph.D and is under the age of 60. /facepalm

Awaken!

We are trying to sell our car here in Denmark, and we are getting some fun spam.  Here is the original:

Quote
I'm interested in buying your car .. but first i have few questions for you :

why are you selling the car?

how would you describe your car’s condition?

where was this car bought?

how much are you willing to sell the car for?

how long have you owned the car?

has it been modified in any way?

is there any visible scratch or defect on the body that i should know about?

do you have service history?

i won't be able to view it but can you guarantee me it is in a good condition?

sorry about the too much of question. I hope to hear from you soon, and i will make all transportation preparations for it to be transported to my home in America.
Thanks, Ashley.

My wife actually got the above via text message, and it took her ten seconds to figure out that the message came from Australia or something.  Anyway, the absolute absurdity of buying an 8 year-old piece of shit from the country with the world's most overpriced cars and transporting it to the US, the country that probably has the cheapest cars...that alone was enough for us to know it is bullshit.  I mean, the last time a Dane transported his ride to North America, he was probably raping and pillaging in Newfoundland or something.  Anyway, we were trying to figure out the angle, so we sent a response.  Here is what we got back:

Quote
I agree with the price and i'm satisfied with the condition too. I am buying it internationally to America and i would pay you through PayPal as it is the fastest & easiest way for me to make payment at this moment, do not worry about paypal charges, i will take care of that and about the transportation, i shall arrange for a transport agent to come to your home directly for the pickup .

so if you accept this transaction, you should send me your info requested below if you have an account already with paypal:-

name :
payPal email :
mobile number:
total price :

or you should send me a PayPal money request, so that i can proceed with the transfer and then we can arrange for my transport agent to come for the pick up, after you receive your money. I will need your home address too for the pick up to be arranged.

i expect your reply soon :) .
Ashley.

So what's the angle here?  Some kind of Paypal scam?

It's a twist on all the PayPal payment scams and why I won't use them for anything.  They'll tell you there was a problem and they need you to send a money order for the shipping charges.  Once you do that they cancel the Paypal payment and have your shipping fees.

Yes, buying salted mushrooms from Chinese email spam. What could possibly go wrong. The best case scenario would be that they send you fake cardboard mushrooms. Eating mushrooms from China with their QC and consumer protection laws means your liver would be mush after one swallow.

My metaphorical ship has finally come in.

Quote
Hello,
Please do not be angry or surprise to receive my letter, i apologize for any inconveniences it may cause you. I am contacting you even though I have not met with you before but due to the situations around me I decided to call upon you for help. I am Miss SARAH BRIGHT from Ivory Coast; I’m the only child of late Mr. JOHN BRIGHT, my father was shot dead during the last political crisis in my country and now i'm orphan. I am contacting you for help to transfer the sum of US$8,500,000.00 (Eight million Five hundred thousand United States Dollars) which i inherited from my late father. My late father deposited the money in a fixed deposit account in bank with my name as the next of kin before he died. My father acquired the money through his genuine gold and cocoa business in the country.
I went to the bank for the money but because of my age the bank needs me to appoint my guardian or caretaker to the bank for the release and transfer of the money. The bank manager told me that the money cannot be release directly to me based on the deposit agreement bond which my late father signed with the bank concerning my age as next of kin. Therefore i am required to appoint someone as my guardian or partner to the bank so that the bank can release / transfer the money to the person on my behalf. Right now my wicked uncle is after my life, he wants to kill me and takeover all my late father's properties, because of his presence i do not want to appoint anybody in my country as my guardian because i don't want my wicked uncle to know about the money in the bank.

I want to choose you as my guardian or foreign partner so that I will introduce you to the bank for the transfer of the money into your account in your country on my behalf and after the transfer I will come over to your country to continue my study while you help me to invest the money in good business. I will be glad to compensate you with 20% of the total money after successful transfer of the money into your account. Presently, I am hiding myself in another village in my country so that i can be free to complete the money transfer and come over to your country to start new life. I am waiting for your reply for further details and way forward.

Thanks,
Miss Sarah Bright.

A Nigerian astronaut is stranded in space and needs 3m to come home:

Dr. Bakare Tunde
Astronautics Project Manager
National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA)
Plot 555
Misau Street
PMB 437
Garki, Abuja, FCT NIGERIA

Dear Mr. Sir,

REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE-STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL

I am Dr. Bakare Tunde, the cousin of Nigerian Astronaut, Air Force Major Abacha Tunde. He was the first African in space when he made a secret flight to the Salyut 6 space station in 1979. He was on a later Soviet spaceflight, Soyuz T-16Z to the secret Soviet military space station Salyut 8T in 1989. He was stranded there in 1990 when the Soviet Union was dissolved. His other Soviet crew members returned to earth on the Soyuz T-16Z, but his place was taken up by return cargo. There have been occasional Progrez supply flights to keep him going since that time. He is in good humor, but wants to come home.

In the 14-years since he has been on the station, he has accumulated flight pay and interest amounting to almost $ 15,000,000 American Dollars. This is held in a trust at the Lagos National Savings and Trust Association. If we can obtain access to this money, we can place a down payment with the Russian Space Authorities for a Soyuz return flight to bring him back to Earth. I am told this will cost $ 3,000,000 American Dollars. In order to access the his trust fund we need your assistance.

Consequently, my colleagues and I are willing to transfer the total amount to your account or subsequent disbursement, since we as civil servants are prohibited by the Code of Conduct Bureau (Civil Service Laws) from opening and/ or operating foreign accounts in our names.

Needless to say, the trust reposed on you at this juncture is enormous. In return, we have agreed to offer you 20 percent of the transferred sum, while 10 percent shall be set aside for incidental expenses (internal and external) between the parties in the course of the transaction. You will be mandated to remit the balance 70 percent to other accounts in due course.

Kindly expedite action as we are behind schedule to enable us include downpayment in this financial quarter.

Please acknowledge the receipt of this message via my direct number 234 (0) 9-234-XXXX only.

Yours Sincerely, Dr. Bakare Tunde

But there is no Sajut 8 station. OTOH he said it was a secret military one, so we not knowing about it is no proof!  :psyduck:
