First Round:

Well, Jacksonville already beat them in Pittsburgh earlier this month. Might as well expect it to happen again.

Also, Fred Taylor is the shit.

As much as I love the Steelers and root for them, to honestly appraise means I don't give them much chance. Parker exiting the season was a blow, but a bigger minus is that the defense, which I struggled in wonderment how they could be ranked #1 even earlier in the season, is not up to snuff, at least in terms of what a Steeler defense should look like…

The Giants are world-class CHOKERS under Coughlin. They don't win big games.

First Round:
Jacksonville - Pitt's defense is too banged up and soft this year, and not having Willie Parker is going to kill them against the Jags.
San Diego - Despite San Diego's inconsitency, they should win this game hands down, especially if Young is seriously hurt.
Seattle - I think the Skins have done about as much as they can on emotion. The team is not great on offense, despite Portis, and I don't expect them to travel well.
Tampa Bay - See above. Giants are massive choke artists. They will fold. Tampa's D is going to skullfuck Eli.

Jacksonville at Pittsburgh - too bad the Steel aren't healthy, because this would be the only game where both participants had a chance to make some noise later in the playoffs. The Steel D is down a safety and a half (if Polomalu plays at all that is) and a great run-stopping d-lineman. The o-line is a MASH unit as well, and (save Faneca) hasn't been playing well even when healthy. However, I'm a mindless homer. STEELERS

Tennessee at San Diego - Tennessee could win a playoff game. If they were in the NFC. Maybe. CHARGERS

Washington at Seattle - Seattle's pass offense vs the Skins pass D should make an entertaining game. I don't think Alexander will show up, and I think Portis will. REDSKINS.

N.Y. Giants at Tampa Bay - Tom Coughlin blew the Giant's wad getting a moral victory against the Pats in a meaningless game. I've never seen last week's moral victory make a tackle or a block. But what seals the deal is Eli vs one of the better pass defenses in the league. BUCS,

Polamolu to play Saturday, practiced today… …spoke to family who all tell me that nobody in Pittsburgh is expecting them to win, so who knows, they could surprise… …lost another OL (Starks) too, and untested rookies and dudes from practice squad could get significant snaps… …not a good omen…

I would laugh at everyone banking on Todd fucking Collins to lead a team to playoff victory on the road, but the weather has a good chance of being shitty tomorrow, which will destroy Seattle's passing offense. I am actually mildly worried for the first time all week.

Todd fucking Collins is going to remember he's old and fucking sucks pretty soon. Their emotion-ride is just about over. Besides the fact the Hawks are 3-0 in home playoff games the last two years. That being said, I'm with Par, I'm a lil worried about the weather. Alexander/Morris can't carry this team, they need Hasselbeck or they're done.

0 for 2, dammit Pittsburgh you suck-diddly-uck. They freaking HAD IT!

Lousy coaching by Tomlin in 4th quarter.

Been driving the ball all half and then once they get a 1 point lead they decide to just sit on it and go ultra-conservative, and then special teams coverage failure gives Jaguars ball at midfield.

Then, after having been done in by draws by Jaguars in previous game, don't have that covered on 4th and 2.

Unfuckingbelievable.

Title: Re: NFL Playoff Predictions
Post by: HaemishM on January 05, 2008, 10:07:34 PM
Both my predictions were correct.

Man, inconsistency abounded today. The Seahawks/Skins game should never have been close. It's been a while since I watched the Hawks. What the fuck happened to their offense? They can't run for shit most of the time, and Hasselbeck was all over the place. If they had been able to make one or two more plays in the first half, that game would have been over by the 3rd quarter. Todd Collins is what I thought he was, a backup at best. Santana Moss is just an underachieving twit. He's got all the skills to be a top receiver in the league, but he just never seems to give it his all. That Hawks defense is pretty solid though. Too bad their offense is going to get dickstomped by the Packers next week.

The Steelers/Jags game also should not have been that close. I'm not sure what happened to the Jags' coverage in the second half, but it was full of fail. It isn't like the Steelers were mixing things up at all. Davenport did fuckall for running all night. So why couldn't the Jags cover anyone in the second half? Definitely bad play-calling on Tomlin's part in the end. They'd already proved that they couldn't run the ball, so why not just go for short slants and high percentage passing? It's too bad the Jags are in the same division as the Colts and Pats. They'd be my pick for the NFC Championship if they were in the NFC, as that defense is better than both the Cowboys and the Packers, IMO. I bet the Jags are rooting for the Titans like a motherfucker, just so they can go play the Colts.

Umm, no. I got 3/4. I picked the Chargers.

I was surprised by the Tampa game. I kept expecting Eli to choke on it. Instead, it showed just how shitty the Tampa receivers are when Galloway isn't 100%. I mean, you're playing the goddamn Giants, whose coverage doesn't get better than suspect, and they don't even have one of their starting corners. And you can't get more than 14 points? You suck.

I actually expected the Chargers/Titans game to be closer, but their defense just didn't hold up. It wasn't a blowout, but it beat the spread.

EDIT:

New England - Come on, the Jags MIGHT beat them... but I doubt it. I can't beat against the Pats no matter who is playing.
Indy - The Chargers just aren't consistent enough. If Harrison back, it'll be worse.
Dallas - Giants will choke. They just delayed the choke by a week.
Green Bay - Seattle's offense is WAY WAY too inconsistent. The Pack's will pack them in when they don't have to defense the run.

Seattle has a chance in GB, but they aren't a very good road team. I am wondering if Hasselbeck is totally healthy, since he looked like shit for most of Saturday. If he gets it going (it would help if Deion Branch's vagina healed) and the defense contain the run and get some pressure on Mr. Favre, they can do it.

The only reason I want NY to beat Dallas is to give the Hawks a home game in the NFC championship if they manage to sneak by the Pack. It will likely cost me several hundred dollars if Dallas is one and done in the playoffs (FF league runs through the SB, and I am clinging to a tiny lead with Romo as my QB; other guy has Peyton).

Yes, all the favorites, would like to pick JAC, but only in some alternate scoring system (say, where the W/L results were weighted against how many picked for/against — i.e., if 10 people predicted GB/SEA for instance, and 8 pick GB, 2 pick SEA, then 2 points would be awarded for correct GB pick (if GB won), but 8 points for SEA upset win (if SEA managed to upset). But then that's my peculiar fetish, to search for more equitable algorithmic prediction registry justifications…

I have this terrible terrible feeling in the pit of my stomach that Eli is going to play ok and more importantly the Giants disgusting front line is going to fuck Romo up badly.  I want to be wrong but I dropped a point last round (fuck you Giants) so I need to take one upset for a shot at the win.  I really want to take the Bolts but that defense really only comes alive when its playing with a lead and it can just hunt the QB, so barring that happening I just don't see it.  I know the Jags can't win, they just don't have the offense to put up 24 and nobody is going to hold the Pats to less then 17 this season.  But they MIGHT hurt Brady, or Moss, or both.  Also they might knock out 2-4 players on their defense running over them.

We've heard all year people say, the LB's are old if you run at them they will wear down.  I'm not exactly sold on that.  I would rather see somebody play physical with Moss and fuck with him, light him up with as cheap a shot as you can get if he comes across the middle.  Then if you can get him playing half-assed like he used to play just blitz LB/CB/Safety from his side and try to decapitate Brady.  That's the best plan I can come up with.  Oh, and fucking kill Kevin Faulk, god I hate that guy.

Lot of chalk picks.  I feel obligated to pick an upset.  As I'm a Seattle homer, I should pick the Hawks, except I'm dead fucking certain that they're going to get creamed at Lambeau.  So I'll go . . (finger in the wind). . Gints.

Re Seattle, I'm betting on Seattle's D ruining Favre's day. This becomes even more likely if Hasslebeck can recover from his hand injury.

I'm going to be rooting for Jacksonville, but it ain't going to happen.

In StupidUniverse, the Superbowl will be Indy v NYG, so we can listen to 3 hours of the announcers spooging all over the 'Manning Family Dynasty'. :P

Since I'm behind most everybody else I'm going to have to go for some upset picks:

Jacksonville - cause Belichick is fucking cheater and there's no way the AP should've awarded Coach of the Year to him
Indianapolis
New York - gotta pick another upset somewhere
Green Bay

I don't see why/how anyone would pick the Giants to do jack shit against the Cowboys. They've had the rare opportunity to play them twice in the season already, and got beat down both times.

Jax -- Because, as Trippy pointed out,  the Pats wouldn't be shit w/o video tape. And, NE/BOS fans are the most worthless pieces of insufferable shit on Earth. They make Philly fans look like goddamn lovable donkeys.
IND
NY -- Only because I want a home NFC Championship game.
SEA -- If the D plays like they can, and Hasselbeck plays like he should, Hawks should win that game. I give the Pack their props, but Hawks O, when its on, is unstoppable.

Not to play down the threat he brings to the field, but as long as they figure out ways to get coverage off of Witten, I think they're fine. Sure, it won't happen all from one guy, like in TO's case, so more than likely it'll be Crayton and Glenn -- and they're not bad substitutes by any means. That team can still win against New York.

If it was Witten who was hurt, that'd be another thing.

He's going to play and he's going to play well. Wade Phillips was trying to cover that up to the media today, but some of the players said he was running routes and looked good doing it. Plus, Terry Glenn will be more up to speed. He probably won't start the game, but I could see him coming in on 3 WR formations.

The Cowboys will be ready. :)

I think that was Wade's intention, but I don't think his teammates got the memo.  :oh_i_see:

If Glenn is even half the receiver he was last year, having him on the field with TO, in this offense, is going to be fun to watch.

I'm going with the teams that actually looked like winners going into the post season.  Not super confident on Chargers/Giants pulling it out, but more confident than Indy/Dallas not coming out flat.

Caveat: Yes I am an insanely loyal Charger fan.

That being said I don't have any illusions about how they play sometimes (*cough* Rivers *cough*), the fact the the team is at this point relies almost entirely on LT, or that Norv isn't the strongest playoff coach but...

Still, I think they have a decent shot a beating Indy.  The last time they played was Cromartie's interception fest and Manning looked out of sorts, and the special teams scoring helped as well.

So yes, I'm looking at the game with the heart of a fan, but I don't think it's necessarily that lopsided.  I think the fact that it's a home game for Indy is the biggest hurdle as Rivers play like ass indoors. *cross fingers*

Green Bay will lose their first game as I said in a previous post. Green Bay is totally reliant on the pass for 3/4 of their offense. Seattle is the same way. In a game where the weather is going to be in the mid-20s, no passing attack is going to be very effective for very long. The game will come down to which runningback and O-line will play the best, and who has the best special teams unit. I think Seattle will win the field position war and win a very low scoring game.

Right -- that's how Ryan Grant became the leading rusher in the NFL in the second half of the season.

I realize that, but his gains are completely established by the pass, not the other way around. He's an impressive talent, but we're talking about a guy putting up 800 yards in the second half, and a team that had 2400+ in the air. If you take away that passing game, they won't be able to run like that at all.

Title: Re: NFL Playoff Predictions
Post by: HaemishM on January 08, 2008, 12:54:02 PM
Why would you think that Seattle would be able to pass any better than Green Bay? In a Favre vs. Hasselback matchup, I'd take Favre in cold weather any day of the week. As for running games, Shaun Alexander and Matt Morris will not equal Ryan Grant, who pleasantly surprised me late in the season. As bad as Green Bay's running game was the first half, that's been Seattle's running game the whole damn year, including at home against Washington. I've no idea what makes you think they'll be able to run against Green Bay any better. Green Bay has a better front 7 than Washington, and their corners are on par or better than the Skins as well. Not to mention the fact that Green Bay's passing game relies on high percentage throws like slants and such, which are still high percentage in the cold weather. Passing won't be the huge problem you think it will be, at least not for Green Bay.

Oh and the Pack's receivers are better too. Engram/Hackett/Burleson < Driver/Jennings/Jones.

Title: Re: NFL Playoff Predictions
Post by: sidereal on January 08, 2008, 01:50:28 PM
I disagree that the Pack receivers are better.  I heart Jennings, but I'd take our (Seattle) 3 over their 3.  Especially now that Branch is back.  And definitely our 4 over their 4 (Burleson > Robinson).  But it doesn't matter, because Favre is better than Hasselbeck, and even that doesn't matter because it's going to be a ground game, and the Seattle running game is a joke.  Holmgren completely abandoned it the second half of the season, because Alexander imploded and is now slightly worse than career backup Mo Morris.  On the plus side, our LB crew is pretty good and if Tatupu and Peterson can knock Grant around enough and get to Favre, we might win a turnover battle.  But I'm not betting on it.

Title: Re: NFL Playoff Predictions

Matt Morris

LOL

I agree that I think GB is going to win at home, Hawks can't win a ground war. But there is no way in hell the Packers front 7 are better than Seattle's. If you look at the stats, they are virtually identical in every category, except sacks, where Sea had a sizeable advantage.  They each gave up identical PPG. This game is going to be closer than you think. If Matt plays well, and Favre throws a few picks, Sea wins this game.

Title: Re: NFL Playoff Predictions
Post by: WayAbvPar on January 08, 2008, 02:22:56 PM
If I had to give % chance, I would say somewhere like 55%-45% in favor of GB, mostly because they are at home. Everyone outside of the PNW consistently underestimates Seattle. Hopefully they can surprise everyone again.

If they could somehow make it to the SB and beat the Patriots (spoiling the perfect season, and hopefully driving Brady into Belichick on the sidelines causing both of their gruesome deaths), I could die a happy man.

Why would you think that Seattle would be able to pass any better than Green Bay?

I don't. I don't think either team will bother with it, and I think the special teams of Seattle is better than GB. That's where the game will be decided in my view; a battle of field position and cold weather kicking.

Hasselbeck is a whiney pussy. If he spend half the effort throwing the ball that he did bitching at the refs, Seattle would have at least been in the game.

Jacksonville is hanging with the Pats, but as we've seen in the past, the first half is meaningless with that team. If Jacksonville is leading in the 4th quarter, I'll start getting jumpy.

If they blitz they are looking at man coverage on the outside receivers and NE will kill them with the bomb. Playing against the Pats offense is a Hobbsian endeavor.

Title: Re: NFL Playoff Predictions
Post by: LanTheWarder on January 12, 2008, 07:44:56 PM
Well they held the pats to a fieldgoal for the first time blitzing. That's slightly better than a TD every time.

I do agree with you that they weren't going to win the game regardless but sitting back hoping for a mistake isn't how you play the Pats. The only teams I have seen stop the patriots forced mistakes with a good rush on the QB. They didn't win the game in the end, but they didn't sit back and try and cover the receivers all night hoping they make a mistake.

Title: Re: NFL Playoff Predictions

Seriously, just fuck Field Goals against the Pats. You'll lose the game the moment you start doing that, even if it is the right call in that situation against any other NFL team. If you are less than 10 yards to a first down, and you kick a FG against the Pats, you are doomed.

Title: Re: NFL Playoff Predictions
Post by: HaemishM on January 13, 2008, 09:02:07 AM
Ummm, yeah, I was right about the Seahawks and the Packers. Grant ran the fuck all over their defense, AFTER coughing it up twice. The only real good series the Hawks D had was that second Grant fumble. The first fumble was all Grant's fault, the second was a good hit. After that, their defense just never showed up, and not having any sort of running game whatsoever just killed the Hawks. Sorry, Way. Even when Green Bay went down 14, I still knew they'd come back. Green Bay's offense is just too good, and the great part is that now it's a balanced attack.

The Jags looked damn good, but yes, that defense should have blitzed, at least on passing downs. They also should have done a damn sight better against the run, their tackling was poor especially at the second and third level. Garrard showed me a lot, though. That guy is going to just get better, and his receivers are getting better too. They aren't on the Patriots level yet, but I don't think anyone is. If they were in any other division in the league besides the AFC South or East, they'd win that division hands down. I'd actually put them on the same level as Green Bay and Dallas, mainly because Garrard makes so few bad passes. Unfortunately, he made as many bad passes in the playoffs than he did the whole regular season (3 INT's in reg. season, 3 INT's in the playoffs).

I have to LOL at the people picking the Giants, or expecting the Giants to put up great numbers against Dallas. It is to laugh.

Chargers win but the QB and RB both go down, now the Cowboys are without their center and the Giants have secondary injuries I think. Patriots are going to be facing one hobbled team after another.

Edit: On that 3rd down play where Romo appeared to overthrow the ball the receiver slowed down then sped back up, the ball landed right where he would have been had he kept running. And now game over.

Holy fuck, what a day of upset football. After the first fumble, the Colts never looked themselves. Had they gone to New England with or without Marvin Harrison, they'd have lost. Now we get to watch San Diego get stumpfucked by the Pats next week. The thing that won the Chargers that game was depth at the skill positions, and that's one things the Colts don't have. Wayne and Harrison go down, and all you have is Gonzales, who is about 2 years from being Brandon Stokely. The Colts' D was just not good enough all game long, especially their corners. Vincent Jackson is not as good as the Colts made him look. But really, who would have expected with Tomlinson and Rivers out AND Gates hurt, the Chargers would have executed a winning drive?

But really, the Cowboys? I can blame that entire loss on the offensive line. They had way too many false start penalties, too many that killed good drives including that final one. Romo didn't look bad, TO wasn't spectacular but wasn't bad, but the whole offense especially in the second half looked off, and it started at the center. He couldn't get the ball out in time, and guys were jumping all over the place. There's no way the Giants DB's should have been able to do what they did. But to give the Giants credit, Eli didn't fuck up. He had a good game, and he threw no picks. I'd never have bet on that in a million years.

So it looks like we'll have a Pack/Pats Super Bowl for a '97 rematch.

Championship Picks:

New England
Green Bay

I think 2/8 now because two of my upsets came true, even though I'm pretty pissed about the Dallas one, but I saw that coming. I don't care what you do in any season, NOBODY has ever beaten the same team three times. Ironically, Dallas is the one team who's had a shot twice, and now has blown it twice.

6/8  missed on the NYG first win and the SD win.

I'm taking NE & GB for the superbowl.  Please god, let me see a defense try to take it to Brady throughout the entire game, just once, pretty please?

Here's praying for a Shawn Merriman closeline hit on Brady...  Also lol @ Dallas, called that one.  That loss can be put on any section of that team.  The chargers won as a team, the cowboys lost as one.

My Superbowl prediction is still in tact.

Green Bay
New England

Both teams went into the playoffs with momentum and they've kept it going.  I unfortunately think both games are going to be blowouts. Eli's a terrible cold weather quarterback and San Diego is just banged up.  Luckily they've got just about the best backups for their skill players at RB/QB.

Shit, I'm STILL laughing. I wanted to be wrong on that one, because I do so hate the Cowboys and Terrell Owens. But seriously, I'd never have logically thought ELI FUCKING MANNING, coached by Tom Coughlin, I never would have thought that motherfucker would not cough up an INT or two in a big game. It just defies logic. And it just goes to show that even when you know something, you don't know nothing.

Indy and Dallas both suck ass after having bye weeks in the playoffs, especially when they get rested during those weeks. Both teams played under their talent, and both lost.

I just hope it's Green Bay that beats the Patriots. Even as a die-hard Packers fan, I don't think they WILL beat New England, but I sure hope they do.

Perhaps, but shall we discuss the 6 points by the Seattle Offense? It is so wonderful that we pay Alexander $30mil/year. Having spent a decade in Denver all I'm going to say is that most of that cash should be in Seattle's O line.

re: Alexander on the Seahawks, for real, get rid of him.  There is such a fucking disgusting amount of talent coming out of the college ranks at RB these days.  Also, please to be rebuilding your WR corps some time in the next decade?  I haven't seen a good WR wearing anything but #80 on the Seahawks since I was born it feels like.

Seattle thinks its better then it is, because the NFC West is fucking terrible.  The 49ers will not be good until the Yorks are gone, Mike Martz 4tl?  The sooner Bruce/Holt go away the sooner the Rams might stop sucking and I dont know if I even think the Cardinals want to win anymore.  Also lol @ Warner as starter.  The fact that people honestly thought that offense was "unstoppable" is pretty funny.  There isn't a single gamebreaker at any skill position on that offense.  I feel real bad for Holgren, except fuck that, Favre is awesome.

The Rams have been living in the past for fucking forever now.  They've wasted years not being a run-first team (Jackson is a Beast, everyone knows that) partially because of Martz but I think partially because Bruce/Holt are so great blahblah.  They aren't worthless yet but the Rams just don't ever seem to be getting younger and I catch their games at least once a year usually twice thanks to living in NFC West territorry.  I liked that white 3rd WR they had/have he needs to get the ball more.  Presumably they've been drafting defense but you sure wouldn't know it.  I didn't mean to single out Bruce/Holt as much as say that as soon as that era ends the Rams might get around to fully rebuilding the team instead of trying to patch it together enough to go 2-0 against Seattle and win that shitty shit division.

There isn't a single gamebreaker at any skill position on that offense.

Boldin & Fitzgerald are an outstanding pair of receivers.  Otherwise, yeah.

I meant Seattles offense.  Obviously this was a case of rushed shitty from-work posting 4tL.

Hoax, here's what my Rams gameplan would be.

#1) Draft offensive line. By doing this, we protect Marc Bulger, we improve Steven Jackson, and we improve Isaac Bruce, Torry Holt, and whatever other receievers we still have.
#2) Draft a shut-down corner and a good middle linebacker to lead the defense.

I'm not a big Rams fan, but the number of times I counted 15+ yard plays while watching fantasy updates in Rams games because I drafted Holt this year was astounding.

Hell if we can get to the superbowl this year with one of the youngest teams around where we didn't have any running game to speak of for half the year it will be a huge win for us even if we can't beat the pats. I think if greenbay was firing on all cylinders and the pats played like they did the last few weeks they are beatable but we would have to play flawless.

Super Bowl Quarterback ELI FUCKING MANNING.

Seriously... what the fuck?

The Packers never bothered to run. What did they give it to Grant, 10 times? Maybe? That right there is stupid. They were acting like this was the beginning of the season. No wonder they couldn't move the ball in the second half. And what the fuck was with Al Harris tonight? He couldn't cover a gimpy Burress all goddamn game. They stopped the Giants running game, but couldn't beat ELI FUCKING MANNING.

I do have to give Eli credit, though. He never fucked up. He never folded, not all damn postseason. I still don't give him a chance in hell against New England, but he's earned a bit of respect today.

On NE over SD: WTF is Norv Turner punting for when his team is in NE territory late 4th quarter…?

On NYG over GB: Favre threw some stupid passes, Packers were owned for most of the game sans a few a few plays, yet still blew the ballgame as all they had to do was to fall on a loose ball once and the story would be Coughlin's wreck of a coaching job… …Giants deserved to win, they were the better team and totally stymied GB in 2nd half. Packers figured out how to stop Plaxico in 2nd half, but not the other 10 guys on Giants offense…

I predict NE slaughter of Giants + Eli but one has to admit that Giants are looking like team of destiny, kind of like Steelers road warrior squad from 2006 super bowl that took their 6th seed and won out… …but handling NE on more fertile passing game conditions is a whole different nut…

Grant did have one good run. But it wasn't like they really ever tried to get the running game started. The whole 4th quarter, every time Green Bay got the ball, I was saying "Run the ball, at least once." But they didn't. They just kept throwing the ball, and knowing that, the Giants just loaded up the pressure and played the pass. And it wasn't like they were trying high percentage out routes, or slants, but easy to intercept stuff or underneath dink passes. They got outcoached and outplayed. It almost reminded me of New Orleans vs. Chicago in last year's NFC Championship game. Let's just forget that we've got a running game, we can pass on these guys. Only, they couldn't and they lost because of it.

STOP KICKING FIELD GOALS AGAINST THE PATS!

Yeah, when the Chargers kicked that field goal in the 4th quarter instead of going for it on 4th down, I knew it was over. Actually, I'd know for over a quarter that it was over... essentially, every time the Chargers kicked a field goal. But you're right, if you're in field goal range against the Pats, you might as well just go for it.

Even worse, SD always settled for 3. You cannot beat the Pats if you settle for 3. The Giants MIGHT win if they know this. If you are too close to punt, fucking go for it on 4th. I bet NE had the lowest FG attempts of any team in the NFL by a mile.

I've got to feel bad for Norv here though.  In the Red Zone his O-Line suddenly couldn't move anyone anywhere.  He didn't have LT, nor Gates really.  He ran it every fucking time on the 10, got nowhere and felt forced to pass twice versus 7 Pats in a zone.  Really I think after the first two times he might have tried to dump it to Sproles or play-action fade route on first down because Turner could only gain 3+ on first EVERYWHERE but the Red Zone, which makes no fucking sense but w/e.

The Chargers could have won, they got to Brady just enough to make him beatable.  That defense almost carried the game for them but the Offense just couldn't catch any breaks and was really banged up.  After that Rivers INT I dont think they even could go deep anymore (I'll admit I don't have a great memory for every play).

So, you are the NYG's, what do you do?  Will they rush 3-4 and think that they are smart enough to beat Brady with zones or will they just go balls out despite not having anywhere near the secondary SD has?  Does it matter?  Can they even stop the Pats running game which is better then the Packs by a good amount imo?

Anyone hear that Rivers had ortho surgery on his knee on the Monday before the game, played the whole goddamn game with a torn ACL and is having surgery to repair the torn ACL? Puts a whole new spin on the "That motherfucker has more balls and grit than I ever could begin to imagine."

Thats damn tough, give him props for that but I can't help thinking maybe the guy without the torn up knee would have given them a better shot at the win.

We canceled our party plans (lack of interest amongst family / friends for the involved teams)…

Still, will make it down (I am 5 minutes away from U of "Phoenix" stadium, which is in Glendale, just a short ride down the 101…) to the NFL experience… …and I remember how cool it was back in '96, when it was on the Salt River shore (before it became Tempe Town Lake…) across from Sun Devil, er Frank Kush / Pat Tillman field…

People getting all crazy, reports that some folks are getting 10K+ to rent out their homes for the week, hotels charging like $500+ a night, etc… …let the gouging commence!

Nope, I seriously doubt any of my friends will throw a party for it. If there's no reason to drink booze on a Sunday, then I'll probably play some WoW, check the score on NFL.com, and if NY is up in the 4th, I'll turn it on.

I don't expect it to be even close.

Disclaimer:
I'm an EU citizen and only became attracted to American Football in 2002 b/c I moved near a city where some friends of mine started playing in a Team, so I'm only concerned with the sport itself and never became soaked into any team-rivalries (besides I figured no one in the AFC North likes one another) or the history of some teams in daily life.

Nevertheless, I hate the Patriots. Someone in the Thread already said that they are just so easy to hate.

And I like the style the Giants play on defense- reminds me of my beloved Steelers with all the pressure packages that brought them a ring (and which they seemingly forgot in the course of the 08 season...)
AND I like the commercial where Strahan states that he loves his Pancakes with "sum eeeeeegsssss"

So I say- GO GIANTS!

As someone who is a Giants fan (as much as I can be a sports fan which isn't much), and who lives in New England for all my life, I would LOVE the Giants to win.
Actually, it could be any team and I would want them to beat the Pats.

New England sports fans are tied with New York sports fans (I get to hear both working at a casino) as the most annoying sports fans around.
(Though I am sure Texas football fans would be worse.  Luckily they are a couple time zones away from me.)

But the Patriots will probably win. :(

I don't get all the Eli love after he pulled what he did on draft day. I don't hate the guy, but that was kind of a dickish move.

And on the punt, I think Aikman was talking about if they ended up with a decent sized amount of yardage to go on 4th which isn't an unreasonable option with 3 time outs.

EDIT: Oh, I should also note that I thought NE made a huge mistake by not running it when they got down to the 7. They could easily have given the ball back to the Giants with under 2 minutes left instead of 2:30. Would have made a big difference.

With 1:50 left? Even at 4th and 10 seems pretty stupid to me, especially after NE just put together a good drive and the Giant's D was looking tired. Best you can hope for is getting the ball back with 1:20 left and probably no timeouts. If they do score a 1st then you're fucked, and even if they don't you've got a minute to go down the field for a TD.

4th and anything over 4 is a very low percentage play and your game is basically done. If you punt, you can get a turn over on the catch and NE is likely to run three low-yard plays. You will get the ball back with 1:20-1:25 in pretty much the same place or advance if you get a good return. Offense can be effective without TO's. I'm not saying it is a slam dunk call to punt, but it isn't unreasonable in that circumstance.

I don't see how you could call that a boring game. Great defensive game, I loved it. The Pats secondary was all over the place and the G-Men were dominant on the line. Dominant. I think Osi howeveryouspellhislastname was a contender for MVP until Eli made that scramble play. That's legendary football, the underdog stands up to take his place in the most perfect way possible, the qb's dream to have the ball with 4 timeouts and the game on the line, just enough time to drive down for the TD. Almost the perfect game imo.

On the negative front, cut Plaxico. He kept giving up on his routes and my boss (who's a crazy Steelers fan) was always bitching about him doing that in Pitt. The Gints are a pretty good team without the deadwood like the dropsy Tiki.

Great moments outside the game: Peyton cheering on the game-winning TD and (41 yr old) Feagles telling his wife and kids "Just take it all in."

HOLY SHIT

Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning.

One just kind of chokes on the thought. I have talked so much shit about Eli and the Giants all season, and they fucking win the Super Bowl. And they didn't just win it, they DESERVED TO WIN based on their play. Their defense made plays. Their coverage guys made plays, and their coverage guys have been shitty most of the year. Eli threw one pick that was completely not his fault and completed two TD drives against an aging but talented defense.

Say what you want about Plaxico Burress. He's played the entire season on a sprained ankle with torn ligaments. He didn't practice all year, but started every game and played hurt. Yeah, he may give up on some routes, but some guys (Randy Moss) wouldn't have played hurt like he did. And he put a good move on that DB at the end.

Their Defensive Line won them that game, pure and simple. Great pressure, stopped the run and plastered Brady a number of times.

That Tyree catch after the Manning amazo-scramble was, as others have said, legendary. The Giants deserved that win and I'm glad they got it, no matter how much of a douchebag I think Eli was on draft day. He proved me wrong, because I thought he was never going to be more than an average QB. I think he visit Tiki Barber on the set and drop a fruit basket on his shoulder. And I don't mean the kind with shrink wrap and assorted fruits, either.

Based on the amount of cock-sucking the commentators do to the QBs during the season, I'd say yes.

I must have missed him running off like that. There was that confusion on the final second, so I left the room. Yeah, the clock had run out and everyone was on the field, the two coaches did the hug/ handshake thing and then the refs started pushing folks off because they'd put :01 back on the clock.  The NFL required there to be one more play (wtf, why?)  and after about 3 mins they got the field cleared and got the last snap in.  Billy was in the tunnel long before they got the field cleared, and may or may not have known the game wasn't officially over.

I go with the 'dick move' version myself, based on the look on his face.

The Super Bowl MVP isn't like Madden's horse trailer, you generally have to pick one person.  Tuck, Osi, Strahan and Mitchell (and various others) all had big impacts on defense and it's hard to single out a single player that made the biggest one (personally I think it was Tuck).

I don't see much fault in giving the MVP to a QB that led two fourth quarter touchdown drives when his team needed it the most and was 1/2 of one of the greatest plays in Super Bowl history.

Baring a RB running for some crazy-retarded amount of yardage or a complete shut-out by a defensive player (the Giants rotated their D-line throught the game to keep 'em fresh so it was really their whole line) it'll usually go to the QB.  Field general and all.

Oh, and the only reason I wanted NE to win this game so we didn't have to hear from those insufferable 72 Dolphin pricks ever again.

Yeah, because hearing from the insufferable 07 Patriots pricks for another 40 years would have been awesome.  At least the Dolphins are going to die soon.

It wasn't great watching the Giants win because I don't like the Giants either, but I'm sick of the Boston teams. I want them all to get ground into dust for the next few decades so their fans will shut up again.

Yes

The problem is that when Boston fans are losing they blanket the whole fucking country with their somber suffering and curse bullshit.  Like their pain is so much more important than everyone else's.  I'm rooting for them to hover in .500 mediocrity for the next 50 years.  Except the Bruins.  They're alright.

Living in CT all my life is probably why I have such low interest in sports and what interest I do have is not for local teams.
New England sports fans are complete fucking morons who take entertainment too seriously.  (Like the old bitch I mentioned in this thread earlier.)
I mention playing tabletop RPGs?  I am a big loser OMG.
Yet babbling endlessly about the Red Sox or Patriots is perfectly fucking acceptable.
(And my passtime doesn't have 2-3 hours of NOTHING in between the 1 hour actually worth giving a shit about.)
Both things are merely pleasant time wasters that should be better spent improving the world in some way.

Just once has been decreed as a socially acceptable thing to do, blat on about endlessly, and treat as far more important than it really is.

Wait.. I thought you were a giants fan. Are you saying that you're just glad the pats lost because umm... you feel ostracized in your locale for playing tabletop games? Hmm.

<Comparisons>

Did you just make comparisons between talking about sports and talking about tabletop RPGs? The reason talking about local sports is considered "normal" by the average populace is that a very large percentage of the populace has played them at some point in their lives. That, and it's something you can rally around with your colleagues because it's a common experience. You all watched the same game, and then you can interpret the results in your own way.

Gaming (PC, RPG, TCG, etc.) don't have that same connection. You can't go up to your colleagues and go MAN, did you catch that M:TG tournament on FOX? What a jackass that guy was for pulling out that card in the 5th round, huh? It's a niche time-waster that always have varied results. Inevitably you aren't talking about the same experiences; you are simply comparing your own experiences at best. The lack of common experience sort of makes the conversation dull in my book. I've tried talking about WoW with people that play it. It's nowhere near as amusing as talking about hockey, or the Superbowl, or college football conferences and matchups and BCS controversy.

Sports that require skill, physics and intelligence usually win the overall interest contest over (mind-)sports relying mostly on intelligence and luck.

That said, it was an awesome SB. Luckily I'm around a lot of football nerds here in Austria so I could enjoy those 8 hours (starting 8pm to 1am kickoff time- nearly dropped my exam today) of pure show and sports with people who are as passionate as anyone in the US could be about that game.

We too couldn't get our behind-ends back on our seats the final minutes of the game- most exciting SB I've ever seen (starting with the Pats "can I kick it?" over the rams). I just love games that are dominated by defenses though they are facing offenses that are usually more than capable of scoring.

And I think I already said it, but those pats really deserved that. Even by just being able to get coverage via nfl.com and their videos, you really could get a feeling of the pricketness (spellcheck?) they presented while you had a fun having bunch on the other side.

But, season's over- looking forward to the draft already and seeing my beloved steelers playing again in 7 months- my local cable-tv provider finally got NASN into their program  :heartbreak: :heartbreak: :heartbreak:!!

I am.
The Patriots losing is just doubly rad.  :drill:
(To quote Homer Simpson:  IT WORKS ON SO MANY LEVELS!)
Actually, I would have been happy for the Pats to have lost to just about anyone but the Cowboys.
I just enjoy the misery of New England area sports fans because they take this shit entirely too seriously.
Then again, a great many of the world's problems come from taking shit too seriously.

Now you know it!

AND THUS, YOU CAN'T UN.. KNOW IT.

You watch football?  For some reason, I wasn't expecting that.

Why? I watch and enjoy football AND american football. I love them both, for different reasons.

I am from an old old country with a huge History which is going down the drain at the speed of light. More like at the speed of money, politics and commercials.

I got interested in American Football in 1983 by stumbling randomly on Burt Reynolds and The Longest Yard, and the Superbowl with Washington Redskins and Charlie Brown. I was a kid and couldn't believe a player had the name of the Peanuts' character.

Madly in love ever since.

A Boston guy in my office bet another guy in the office before the season began that the Pats would win the Superbowl. No odds, just straight up for $500. Idiot almost won.

The middle of the Baltic Sea? :P

I know an incredible number of Lithuanian immigrants, and they've all convinced me the whole Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania area is gorgeous.
