Title: Phoenix, AZ. F13 Get Together? July 14th-17th
Post by: schild on April 30, 2007, 12:59:14 AM
Looks like Squirrel is going to be in town from Canada. So why the fuck not. Come one, come all. There's tons of shitass cheap resorts and hotels. It's hotter than fuck. And the drink runs like water. Get your ass out here. We have lots of floor space to pass out on.

'Tis true. I arrive Sat. July 13th and am staying until the 18th, all RnR time, flying solo as my girl's in Ottawa. Have plans the Sat. night but other than that am up for all manners of debauchery. Staying at the Valley Ho hotel - a suite with a bathtub in the living room, which I'm sure I'll sleep in at least once.

Oh, and for the record: I'm in Chandler, Squirrel will be staying in Scottsdale. If you need places to stay close to us, as passing out on my floor every night isn't really attractive, I can give you a list, just tell me if you want to stay in Scottsdale, Chandler, Gilbert, or Mesa (all east valley).

Also, if you stay at the same place Squirrel is staying, we're going to be doing at least one night at his place as there's a Hawaiian restaurant there.

I already live here but haven't met any of you so I'd be up for dropping by. On a related note, is anyone going to PhoenixCon(mostly traditional non-videogaming convention) in June?

The Valley of the Sun in mid July? Why not schedule it for Hell? It would be a damned sight cooler.

You mean ConGames (http://www.conevents.com/page/phx/main.asp)?  I'll likely wander about on a one day pass there.

I already live in the valley also, but this sounds like a good excuse to actually meet some of you imaginary internet peoples.

You beat me to it.  Az is barely bearable in the winter.

One of these days I'll come bug you during a golf trip.  I can be the token old guy.

Ya'll some bitches. Ya, June, July and August and parts of September are hot. But man, you're all pussies for being so young. It's still better than Florida during the summer and people flock there. Though, they may be crazy. Also, you don't even notice the heat when you numb it with alcohol. And this whole little shindig is a matter of coincidence since Squirrel is coming. Not to mention, he's from Vancouver, so he could very well MELT while he's down here.

Also, you don't even notice the heat when you numb it with alcohol.

You'll be numb because the alcohol combined with the heat will dehydrate you to the point of death.  Come to California, where you can... you know... go outside during the daytime.

I'd come, but I'd just lurk in the background like I do here. Also I'm poor.

Fake edit: June 29th here. My father is in early July, my stepfather is June 2nd and a couple other people I know are in June. Does everyone just have sex in October?

I don't know what you all had in mind, but you don't go outside during the day in Arizona except to get to your car.

The heat's not that bad because you just don't step into it.  You certainly don't go midday drinking.  The more nocturnal you can make your lifestyle, the better.  Summer nights are awesome.

Not if it's Roy's, it isn't.  That's what you were planning, right?  Roy's?

Also, to agree with Schild just this once, at no time is Arizona EVER worse than the heat in Florida.  I've been here a week and have never had to drink so much water in my life.

I don't know what you all had in mind, but you don't go outside during the day in Arizona except to get to your car.

That's pretty much it, when I had to describe Arizona to someone I basically said: think of it like being on Mars, you hop from one air conditioned bubble to the next spending as little time exposed as possible, the only difference is you actually don't need a space suit.

As long as you stay out of the sun, it's not too bad -- stay in the shade, and with cool and frothy beverage in hand, even in the midst of 110 degree July-August heat, is a lot more livable than say, Minnesota in December…

But usually in July, I head north for cooler confines…

Let me know if you all are going to be west of I-17 as I don't usually make a habit of crossing I-17… …except for an occasional trek into N. Scottsdale…

We need to do a WA/OR/BC gettogether one of these days. There are 4 or 5 regulars from the Seattle area, some BC folks, and VDL and Sauced from Portland. Would be fun!

I would consider trying to get to WA/BC although really I think all parties should meet in the middle and call it a day.

The Bay Area being the middle point between AZ and BC according to my internal geography.

Plattsburgh on the edge of the Adirondack Park,  though the family has a place inside the Park.  A little over an hour from the High Peaks region, Placid, Saranac Lake, or where ever.  I don't make it into the South or West of the Park that much, though,  and my hiking has been greatly curtailed due to the recent lack of an appropriate hiking partner.

I second this. I can make up some bullshit conference that I need to go to to justify the trip to the wife.  :-D

Oh, and just because Vegas has been mentioned I need to post my bad beat story from Friday. I was playing in a 10-20, full kill (which takes it to 20-40) game that only gets up about 3 times a year when they do a big tourney. Had an up and down night, but am just about even and really ready to leave when I get rockets. I am just to the left of a total donk that has put a grand into the game, gone to the felt and is now on a rush having won about 5 of 6 last hands. Earlier before his rush he paid 3 bets on the flop with 65o with a board of A23 that I thought was a great flop with my pocket rockets. He of course spiked the 4 on the turn. Yay me. Anyways, He has the kill buton so has posted 20 bucks. I raise it to 40, a guy 4 to my left 3-bets it, cold-call from donk's brother, he cold calls, I made it 80, guy makes it 100, call, call, I cap it, call (all-in) call call. So, there is 495 dollars in the pot before the flop. Flop comes down K62 which is a really good flop for me. Check, I bet, call call. Turn is an 8. Check, bet, fold (which makes me think a signal was passed), raise. I know I'm dead but there is now 700 bucks in there, so I call it down to see 86s when a blank hits the river. The all-in guy had slick. I got up and left while the dude pulled his 795 dollar pot against my cracked aces.

Going to AZ is tons more expensive for us East coasters. Sure, I can tough out the drive to VT, which takes the better part of 8 hours. But AZ?

lolz. That requires a flight, which costs hundreds of bucks. All beside the point, I know.

AZ in summer is getting an undeserved bad rep here imo. Last time I was there was in the middle of August. It's cheap, friendly, good beer and hot women. WTF do you want? Is it hot? Meh some might think so, but it's dry. Compared to SE Asia or anywhere with humidity it's damn comfortable. And anyway only mad-dogs and Englishmen go out in the noon day sun.

Stock up on lager and whisky boys! Flight confirmed - I am there :P

It's a dry heat!  Having been places all over that are humid in the summer (or humid all of the time) give me the desert any day (probably doesn't hurt that I grew up in the desert either).  At least you can run a fan\mist combo whereas all that does in places like Houston is make you more miserable and attract mosquitos.

If you need places to stay close to us, as passing out on my floor every night isn't really attractive, I can give you a list, just tell me if you want to stay in Scottsdale, Chandler, Gilbert, or Mesa (all east valley).

Looking at places to stay now.  Turns out there are a lot of nice spas in that area so the plan is for both me and my wife to stay at one of those, so she can do the spa thing and I can do whatever it is you plan to do.  Two birds with one stone.  Anyway, I'd like something close to wherever the whatever is, so either some vague locale or a street address to feed into the Google map would help me out.

I'm staying at the Valley Ho (http://www.hotelvalleyho.com/content/index.html?) - a somewhat retro hotel. If you have $$$ see if you can swing the  Phoenician  (http://thephoenician.com/pages/index.html). I stayed there once and it was fucking awesome. For spa/pool/service anyway.

Swank.  Taking that one into consideration.  I love that style.

Looks nice as well, and closer than the place we really want to stay, The Boulders (http://theboulders.com/index.cfm).  Seems like we were going to stay at some other place called Phoenician on some other untaken trip, perhaps on some island.

What, sofas aren't classy enough anymore?

I will have to tell you about the various places I have lived in the past, especially the ones with Killjoy.  The short answer is: No.  Someone is going to rub my fucking back and make me feel special while I'm in Arizona.

If driving distance or time to anything in the south valley is a consideration, you probably don't want to be up at the boulders..  its about 30-35 minutes from there to central Scottsdale, and nearly 45 to the Chandler/Mesa area. Without traffic.

Yeah the Valley Ho is pretty styling actually, very kitsch but done just right. They're actually having a sale atm on rooms in this time-frame, I assume July/Aug are slow tourist months in the desert heh.

Right.

More likely than not you'll have a couple of kids, your wife will become "bored" or "need to find herself" and decide to iniitiate divorce.  Bingo, bango, your kids are gone, you've divvied up half your shit, and you're paying around 30-40% of your income to the ex for approximately 10 years.  And note that well over 50% of marriages end like this, and in the US around 75% of the divorces are initiated by women.  I've seen this shit happen to way too many guys, many of them my friends.  These poor bastards weren't bad fathers, they weren't abusive, and yet, they're fucking ruined.  Absolutely ruined.

Personally, I got off lucky in my divorce.  We didn't have kids, and I didn't have much to take.  Never again, especially since if you don't really want kids you can get all the benefits of marriage with none of the bullshit by just cohabiting.

Go with God, sister.  I wish you all the best.

Personally I prefer to look at the odds, and for lack of a better word, they're shit.  Men have got the deck stacked against us from the get go, and we'd better wake up to that fact.  By all means have fun, screw around, but don't get married.  You're setting yourself up for failure from the beginning.

But seriously, I don't quite understand alimony nowadays, since pretty much all women actually work for a living. I could understand it years ago, when being an actual "housewife" was more widespread, but now? It makes no sense.

Women still average less than a man in an equal position.

That's not to say alimony laws don't need adjustment.  Fortunately I have no experience here.  Family law seems a convoluted mess from the little I've seen of co-workers and friends going through various things.

Alimony almost universally accounts for the money earned by both partners.  In fact, alimony hardly even exists any more. Most payments coming out of divorce are child support.

EDIT: After thinking about this, I'm probably overstating it. But it does account for the woman's wages. They put both wages into a formula to come up with who owe who what. Since statistically women make lower than men, it stands to reason they are likely to get the bulk of spousal support payments.

Apologies to the cool lawyery-types here, but a lot of it is lawyers. When my mother got her last divorce, from a real class 1 a-hole, she just wanted out. She did a lot of stupid stuff like taking on a lot of the loans because the bank wouldn't let them refinance under his name, so he got the boat...but she had to pay for it. Anyway, the royal bitch lawyer she had kept nagging her to take him for all he was worth, to sue him into the poorhouse. So much so that my mother finally had to fire her and go with another lawyer.

My girlfriend makes more than I do :)

Do you mean alimony?  Because I can't see why a man or woman should not have to support their own children.  Why should the new boyfriend/husband be held responsible?

Loophole?  If it's his child he should be paying to support it until adulthood.  It is half his responsibility, the wife getting a new boyfriend or remarrying has absolutely no bearing on it whatsoever.

Except that it's been verified by university studies that around 20% of children are NOT actually the father's biological children, unbeknownst to him.  Does that matter?  No, the father pays regardless "for the good of the children", ignoring the fact that he's been duped by a conscienceless skag.  This is the only case I know of where the victim is forced by law to continue to support the perpetrator.

If the kids are in fact actually his he lives at the whim of whether or not the mother wants him to see his kids.  In most cases he'll become a 14% dad, seeing his kids once, maybe twice a week.  In the bad cases his children will be used as a bargaining chip against him.  And yep, alimony is virtually non-existent nowadays, but that's because child support has taken it's place.  Is that money legally obligated to be used for the children?  Nope, it's paid to the mother and can be used at her discretion.  The courts can be extremely arbitrary in determining the amount, and you will be held to it.  Get laid off?  Fuck you, pay me.  Take a lower paying job?  Fuck you, pay me.

In a lot of ways it's like the mob were running our family law.

What about cases where a married woman cheats on her husband, gets knocked up, lets the husband think it's his, then 2 weeks after the birth, in a fight yells, "by the way, it's not yours!" and oops, it turns out that it is his because the last year of their marriage was spent in hate-sex? Not that this example is close to home or anything.

Uh, no. There was one goofy survey in Scotland or some place with horrible methodology that was then hyped up by the "poor me" male brigade. There have been no actual "university studies" on such a thing that I am aware of. Such a study would in fact have a very, very difficult time getting by an IRB. If you can cite such studies to me, I will look at them and evaluate them, but this is an urban myth as far as I'm concerned.

Around here there is a formula in the statute that is rather rigorously followed.

Out of curiousity, do any of you guys in the Phoenix area have an old dot matrix printer stashed away in one of your closets?  It'd make things go a lot easier for me with regard to stenciling.  I hate tracing this shit out with a passion.  No ink cartridge would be needed, I just need it to hit the front page of the stencil hard enough to transfer over.

...I might have a dot matrix in the attic at my parents house. In Virginia.

Edit: Actually, this weekend I can take a trip to the local college surplus store and see if they have one for pennies.

Don't go too crazy out of your way, man.  I can still trace out the stencils, I was just looking for the lazy way out.  If any of you have an old discarded one laying around, by all means bring it over to Schild's, but don't buy one.

I'm still a noob.  The best I've done is 4 star some of the easier songs on medium.  Good thing we can scale down the difficulty in coop.  I'll be happy to rock the bass since I haven't yet played coop.

It's true I can't sit down and play GH II for 10 straight hours like your lazy ass, but rest assured I can cream you in any fighting game in existence.  The Japanese have a word for you when it comes to these sort of things, it's 'yowai'.

I can still play most of Sweet Child O Mine, though I forget some of the solo and would have to wing it. My band used to play it for my drummer's mother, though we didn't do many covers.

I here there is a heat wave in the South West too.  A heat wave, in Arizona, in July.  The little monitor in the elevator told me so and it never lies.  It displayed the temperature in Las Vegas right now, I'm not a scientist but I'm pretty sure people should start combusting soon.

I'm just being a dick today, no seriousness here.  It's all INTERNET FUN.  I have not played Street Fighter II Turbo in forever, and the others never, but I'd be more than happy to show you how terrible I am.  I do like the versus fighters even if I lose a lot.

yeah i am just being a weenie. no worries. but yeah we should play some SF. i love that series like not other. I just like fighting games a lot.

Ha, I am sooooo Mexican. I keep forgetting that my childhood and upbringing is really similar to that of my black friends. Like family life, food and stuff. But yes. I LOVE me some beans and rice. I really think that if that is all i ate that would be okay. but tortillas and stuff just make it all better. Mexican food is by far my favorite food. sooo good for my tummy. *rub-rub*

Silly girl, I don't have black friends. I live in ARIZONA.

That's not meant as racism, so much as, there are like no black people here. The only one I've met is basically a tan white dude. But he's awesome.

I like thai and rice.  I don't like rice on my mexican food.  All beans, meat, cheese.

Which SF are we talking about?  SFII Turbo or some of the later shit I never played?  I think Dhalsim's going to get fucked up.

EVERYTHING is better with rice. It myriad uses are nigh endless, its additions to cuisine sublime.
