Title: Things I think are funny
Post by: voodoolily on September 29, 2005, 01:20:23 PM
Patton Oswalt's likening of America to a high school run by a retarded trust-fund kid
the calamity of others
when dogs or cats have a bit of poo stuck to their butts and they run around the house doing the "booty scooty"
catty fags (e.g., Ms. J. Alexander, Carson Cresley, etc.)
Stephen Chow films
"I'm Rick James, bitch"
Wes Anderson films
that the cute little squirrel who eats walnuts at the neighbor's squirrel feeder has a huge set of testicles (we call him "Nutsack")
when the beauty pageant girl on America's Next Top Model had to have her hair wacked off at the makeover and she cried
the ridicule of Ashley Simpson on SNL
Vice magazine's "Do and Don't" list
Schild explaining on Teamspeak that the reason he sounds like he has a turd in his mouth is because he's eating beef jerky

All usually guarantee a laugh out of me (though I'm a big Elvis fan as well).

Since I have no opinion on the original post:

Napoleon Dynamite was...

I didn't get it.  But my girlfriend thought it was hilarious.  She loved it, and she's not stupid.  But it was still extremely overrated.

In closing, I agree with Roger Ebert.  Again.

I got Napoleon Dynamite. It just wasn't funny. At all. I'm sure it sounded funny on paper, and the very concept sounds funny, but in practice... it's just sad.

Also, I find it funny that I'm one of the power-hungry cockmunches who admin this site, yet I don't really even know how to ban someone.

When have I ever been subtle?

Outstanding point.  I am feeling sensitive today.

Hmmm What do I find funny:
-There is a late night infomercial hosted by 2 midgets attempting to get people into their real estate thing.  This for some reason fills me with mirth (Ill try and get the website tonight)
-Blogs.  I love blogs, and have like 20+ bookmarked that I avidly cycle through everyday.  Especially the gaming ones, such as KillTenRats.
-College students.  Seriously, WTF.  I am a non traditional student (duh), and their personal problems humor the shit out of me.
-The fact that I am dating a 22 year old.  This for some reason makes me giggle inside (I am not that much older, and have dated younger. I just did not care about any of them before).
-F13 of course.

I find WOW funny.  Sarcasm.  People.  Most animals.  Small cars.  Trucks with more than 4 wheels.  The Daily Show.  Day Light Savings Time.  Monti Python.  The thought of Schild being stuck in a phone booth with QT.

Haem I find more insightful than funny.

Napoleon Dynamite was not funny. It wasn't even in the realm of funny. Oh finnuh. It was, to say the least, one of the most collosal wastes of an indie budget ever put on film. Tarantino could have improved it.

I thought White Castle was pretty decent, I actually preferred Eurotrip. But that's neither here nor there, I would say Super Troopers is the extreme oppisite of Napoleon.

Well, I have to say that Cheddar posting that excerpt from your blog was pretty funny in it's own way.

Napolean Dynamite... I found certain individual scenes really funny, but it just went on and on, and I really didn't care where it was going. So I turned it off after close to an hour.

Title: Re: Things I think are funny

It's not about Napoleon Dynamite, it's about censorship, dammit!  This was meant to be a thread wherein people list things that are funny to them, akin to the "Things I Hate" and "Things I Love" threads.

I actually am sorry I said hurtful things about Shockeye and Haemish. I didn't mean it, I was just licking my wounds after being pummeled for defending what I thought was a quality piece of comedy. I didn't think anyone even read my blog. Follow the link that says 'Scott' to read Sauced's awesome short review of Psychonauts (the man has a gift, I tell you, but he's too shy for his own good). He's a much better blogger than I.

Other things I find funny:
"funneh", "teh funniez" and other ways people say something is funny on f13
Achewood
Scrubs
"You go ahead, I'll stay here and rub one out."

Joy in a Box (http://www.f13.net/reviews.php?subaction=showfull&id=1106600099&archive=&start_from=&ucat=2&). It's a really good teen stoner movie by the same guy who did Dude, Where's my Car? Which I know doesn't sound like an endorsement, but you have to have the right attitude.

Dude, Where's My Car was funny if you go into it expecting to have an entertaining, completely silly experience. It's the 2k version of Strange Brew.

Title: Re: Things I think are funny
Post by: Rasix on September 30, 2005, 09:32:22 AM
I thought Dude Where's My Car was just too shitty to ever be funny.  Yet I enjoyed the hell out of Harold and Kumar, Eurotrip and Super Troopers.  I'm somewhat surprised I liked Eurotrip so much since it was a painfully BAD movie, like crossing the streams bad.  But it was just hillarius.  Wife loved it too.

I actually, umm, liked Napolean Dynamite.  But, I just love sound bite movies. I found much of it middling and slow, so I don't have the MTV generation man-love for the movie. But as a whole, it was worth seeing once.

I think everyone is thankful I don't have admin powers.  Ohh, the chaos I could unleash. (http://www.xradiograph.com/blog/imago/hello.cthulhu.gif)

And ohh, to be more on topic:

Broken Lizard
Larry David
non-sensical humor (IE Sealab)
Kung Fu Hustle
people getting hit the in balls
watching MTV darlings fall to earth and crash (Ashlee Simpson, Fred Durst, etc)
religious right conservatives, scientologists, christian scientiests, militant atheists (pretty much any fundies that aren't blowing shit up personally)
reality tv shows being cancelled
college students (OMG I KNOW EVERYTHING, YOU HAVEN'T TAKEN EGYPTOLOGY 101, I HAVE!)
Bill Murray

I actually thought Dude, Where's my Car was the worst waste of celluloid ever when I saw it. I still have the same intensity of dislike for it but other movies have claimed that title. Harold and Kumar wasn't nearly that bad but it explains why I thought it was Less than Exceptional.

Title: Re: Things I think are funny
Post by: voodoolily on September 30, 2005, 10:17:16 AM
Rasix and I think the same things are funny. Yay! Bill Murray is a genius and is part and parcel why Wes Anderson is so brilliant a filmmaker. Rasix, you should check out the ND soundtrack - it's laden with the funny soundbytes and has the great cheesy music. The poppy electro stuff is so much fun (another Wes Anderson reference - the Life Aquatic music where Bill Murray is doing that little bop dance to the music piped into his diving suit).

And I agree with schild about a movie. I guess they can't all be Office Space.

Now that I know people read my blog I guess I'll hafta step things up a bit instead of talking about what I made for dinner or why I want to see Roll Bounce.

OMG the Daily Show was art last night.

I enjoyed Dude, Where's My Car? quite a lot. Not Anchorman, though.

We have a library cat. I had a mylar balloon that played Bobby McFerrin's Don't Worry, Be Happy when you hit it. I clipped the balloon to her collar and she took that in stride. Then I hit it and Bobby started singing, she ran for the door. As she paused to give me the skunk eye, she saw the balloon flying at her, still singing. I've never seen her run so fast, the clip finally came off as she dove through some shelves several rooms away.

Super Troopers is funny, and Club Dread is just about as funny.  Live-action Pac-Man?  Pina-colada-burg?  Paxton?  Sweet.

Napoleon Dynamite is very funny.  It is a very subtle absurdist comedy.  Some people don't like that.  I, however, love the absurd (see my list).  It was ridiculous yet plausible, plus I have been in situations like Napoleon.  I probably shouldn't admit that I can relate to him.  I have to wonder just who really did get it, because it's kinda in-between-the-lines with the truly funny stuff.  If all you came away with was Rex Kwon Do and the dance scene, I think you missed most of the movie.

Old School was fantastic.  Anchorman was very funny, but Ferrel needs to take a vacation before he does a Jim Carrey.  Ooops... too late!

Dude, Where's My Car is very, very funny.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles.  If you go make a sandwich during the sappy scenes.  For some reason, I think it is funny that they use the same house as in Home Alone.

I think The Blues Brothers is a total classic comedy.  I would rank it above Caddyshack.

I think Freaked is hilarious.  Alex Winter never got his due as a comedian.  Several things were great in that one: Randy Quaid as a villan, Bobcat Goldthwait as a sock, Mr. T as a bearded lady, Brooke Shields voiced by Quaid saying "I'll drink your blood", and Keanu Reeves as Ortiz the Dog Boy.  "Twelve milkmen is theoretically possible.  Thirteen milkmen... that's just silly."

Anything by Mel Brooks.  I mean it.  Young Frankenstein, Spaceballs, Life Stinks, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Dracula: Dead and Loving It, History of the World... you name it.

Kung Pow.  Very funny.  I said it and I am not ashamed.

I know that this post is movie-centric but I think most things are funny in some way, and I don't want to run out of Internet.

You want to know what I think is the seminal absurdist comedy of this era?

The Sweetest Thing. Yea, that movie with Christina Applegate, Cameron Diaz, and Selma Blair. Forget everything you know about reality and order. Not only is it absurd but it's possibly the most unpredictable movie I've ever seen. Helps that it sucks.

Edit: On second thought, How to Get Ahead in Advertising could easily be classified as the ultra absurdist film as well. And Un Chien Andelou but that was made in 1929 or something and is near unwatchable now. Dude, They cut open an eyeball. Sure it's an animal. But it's horrifying.

It was Toungey, wasn't it?  That part was not funny.  Kung-fu baby, aliens, woman with one boob, not so much.  Most everything else, though, was funny.  Maybe I have watched too many kung fu movies over the years.  Can I just promise to not have any more kids?

If cutting open an eyeball can be made funny, I am down with it, but it had better be funny.  I have my doubts.  Still, Reanimator was funny and you have someone being strangled by prehensile intestines... so maybe.

Heh... skeletal Paul Lynde.  I was briefly worried that I might be surrounded by Philistines.

Happiness. Not because it's absurdist, but because it contains the single most excrutiatingly-un-PC-to-laugh-at scene in film history:

"Dad, do you want to fuck me?"

Almost anything media or art-related that a "normal" person's brain would filter as offensive, comes through to me as hi-larious.  Except the subway tunnel scene in Irreversible, but that's another thread I guess.

I think this site has its moments:
http://overheardindublin.com/

It's all people putting in stories of things they've experienced in Dublin.

Example:

In the Omniplex a while back, a particularly boring bit of the movie was on, when a cry came from the dark.

Shadow at the front (shouting): "Anyone! Is there a doctor here? Is there a doctor here?"

(Shock. Confusion.)

Voice from the back: "Here - I'm a doctor"

Voice from the front: "Sh*te film, isn't it?" ...and sat back down

Voice from the back: "Little bastard - if I find ya I'll rattle ya"

I am so glad I no longer know what anyone is wibbling on about.

What the heck is with the wibbling thing?  +1 cool point to Signe since she has yet again confused me.  I am easily confused.

So I come home, my cat will be staring out the window, once I come to the door, he'll jump down in front of the door and start rolling on the carpet, he knows it's about time to get fed, but he's torn, he also knows I'll brush him or pet him which is equally good. So, he'll get brushed or petted, then he'll run into the kitchen and sit beside his bowl, I'll open the door to the funace room, and he'll dart in because he is not supposed to go in there. I'll put some food in his bowl then herd him out of the room. I'll sort through the mail briefly, and he will have had a few mouthfuls of food. Then he will come back into the living room and roll some more and stare at me. I'll finally pet him a bit more. Then I'll head up to change out of my work cloths. But for the past few months, he's decided I'm not petting him enough and he'll wrap his front paws around my leg. (My cat is the most skittish cat I've ever seen, so to have him show any affection is very odd.) Anyways - I think it’s funny. I like faking him out just so he will do it.

Schmoo is a very cool kitty. He will be your friend forever if you give him a good brushing.  :-D

No, I have a thing for really, really old people.   Hey!  I can make a bunny out of my pills!  Even the fluffy tail!

Watched Irreversible last night. Holy Fucking Christ. Brilliant film. The assault was stomach turning. As the film progressed I was constantly drawn to Pierre. Each segment made the exstingusher scene even better. Wow.

So - To continue my cat story...

I take 3 weeks off work to take care of the baby when my wife goes back to work. (Who would smile at me every day when I got home.)

First day when she coomes home, the cats sit around and do nothing, the baby pays her no mind I'm the only one who is the least bit appreciative when she gets home. I finally figured out to put my face next to hers to make the baby smile at her when she gets home.

Anyways, 3 weeks later I come home from work, the cats come running, she's at the door with a beer for me and the baby is smiling.

I think she was more pissed about the cats always running for the door when I get home.

Is your cat female?  Female cats tend to like men, male cats tend to like women.

I cannot believe that Voodoo owns *her own home... or has a pet.  I don't really find it funny when my dog wipes his butt on my carpet.  When you have to start cleaning things up they become much less funny.

Edited to fix my glaring lack of reading and research when necro-posting.  I somehow either missed the "lilly" or just, saw chewbacca and thought "it has to be a guy."

Is there something I don't know about VDL???? Is there something I don't know about Sauced?

I cannot believe that Voodoo owns his own home...

And no - I don't work around food. And both my cats are males. So is my son. It's 4 against 1 in my house.

I have it on good authority that voodoolily is a false-flag operation by Trippy to trick Schild into further expand Trippy's powers and extend his iron grip over F13.

I don't really find it funny when my dog wipes his butt on my carpet.

I don't care how much of a mess it makes, nothing - NOTHING - is funnier than a dog doing the itchy ass butt shimmy accross the carpet. Especially someone else's carpet.

By the time a meme has evacuated 4chan and entered the main stream consciousness in a, usually, sanitized form it really has lost most of it's humor value.

Yea, my dog used to do that too. Also purses, cats, pretty much anything he could stand near. Funniest part was, he never really quite figured the whole thing out. He'd stand about two feet behind his target and just maddly pump at the air for a few seconds. Har

Oh, and he was fixed. Didn't seem to matter to him.

My dog Fluffy, the Destroyer of Worlds has been renamed. He is now Fluffy, the All-Humber. He sees all, he humps all. This dog isn't fixed, but luckily Snow Beast (the female) is. Fluffy will hump the shit out of any dog he meets that doesn't growl at him. There's a little rat terrier type living a few doors down, whose owner NEVER FUCKING LEASHES THE LITTLE FUCKER. So whenever he lets the dog out to do its business, the dog follows me and my dogs. Fluffy promptly forgets his business and follows this dog around trying to hump it like he's an oil drill. Did I mention this rat terrier is a boy dog? The All-Humper cares not.

He also humps Snow Beast. He isn't really trying to mate, because he'll hump anywhere on her body but the right spot. Her back, her ear, her face, whatever, he'll hump it, then give you that crazy ass, tongue-hanging look. It's a source of constant amusement.

Just reading about it is a source of constant amusement.

All-Humper demands video evidence.
