Title: Re: CoV beta invites going out Post by: Shockeye on August 17, 2005, 03:19:45 PM None of the stores I've called in Phoenix have their pre-order boxes and quite a few of them were completely clueless about the game. I spose that shouldn't be a shock...
Title: Re: CoV beta invites going out Post by: Shockeye on August 17, 2005, 03:20:50 PM Quote from: Alexa City of Villains Closed Beta Is Starting! (http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=3507636&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1#3507636) Hello everyone! I am very pleased to announce to you (as promised) that the start of the City of Villains Closed Beta Test is finally upon us! As we have mentioned in the past, first priority into the Closed Beta will be offered to long-time, currently active City of Heroes subscribers as part of a program designed to reward their continued support. Please note that due to the sheer number of people who have been with us for 12 months or longer, not everyone who qualifies under this program will receive an invitation today. Because of hardware constraints, stability issues, etc., beta tests typically start small and then ramp up gradually to include more and more people. This test is no exception. So, if you are a long-time subscriber and you don’t receive an invitation right away, please do not bombard us with PMs and email asking why you didn’t get one! Everyone who qualifies under this program will be invited into the Closed Beta eventually. Contest winners should expect to receive invites within the next couple of weeks. We will send you an email in the coming days to verify your account information, so please be on the lookout for that. For those of you who pre-ordered City of Villains or won a beta slot at E3, the exact date of your beta entry is still being determined. However, it will be at a later stage, after those who qualify under our long-time subscriber program have been invited. As a reminder, once you have entered the City of Villains Closed Beta, you are legally bound by a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA). Please be considerate and don’t flaunt your participation to other members of the City of Heroes community. All it will do is make the people who haven’t been invited feel bad, and will only encourage them to ask you for information that you cannot give them. Please note that no discussion of the game whatsoever includes no taking of screenshots, no verbal anecdotes, and no commenting on message boards or in chats about any aspect of the game. Should you do any of the mentioned or violate the Non-Disclosure Agreement in any way, it will result in automatic removal from the Closed Beta and legal action may be taken against you. We are very excited to see the start of Closed Beta and can't wait to see you there! Yours in villainy, Alexa Title: Re: CoV beta invites going out Post by: Jimbo on August 17, 2005, 03:52:45 PM I'm in! Just registered and downloaded the CoV Beta. I'm just wondering if it's an early signup date that qualifies people, or longterm subscriptions. Nope; i was in from beta, bought my key online, did the 2 day head start and have subscribed ever since. Even though I hadn't played in quite some time, i didn't mind keep it open since I think Cryptic did a good job and do enjoying playing it when the urge strikes. Call it voting with my wallet. That reminds me, i need to go cancel my WoW sub. Xilren Title: Re: CoV beta invites going out Post by: Xanthippe on August 18, 2005, 10:12:23 AM I unsubbed, and just resubbed a week or so ago. Title: Re: CoV beta invites going out Post by: Mesozoic on September 22, 2005, 11:33:49 AM What ever came out of the "Expansion vs Stand-alone game" debate? Is this a $30.00 a month game now or what?
On the one hand, I would love to play around with villain characters...on the other hand I like playing my main too. And having to pick one or the other for $15.00/month is just stupid. Being called an Alienware owner is an insult of the highest order. :-D I've been hand building my own machines from the Apple II days. Anyway back to the NDA subject, I've been surprisingly enjoying the new software. Hey look! Some one took me seriously! I told you lot someone would someday! Go me. They say you use CoV as an expansion or as a stand alone. If you add it to you PlayNC game list, you will have to pay a normal $15 monthy fee to play. If you update your CoH account with the CoV retail code, you can use it as an expansion. Statesman said a while ago that it will be from $0-$5 extra, that it will certainly not cost $15 and, in a couple of interviews, said they haven't made any announcement on that yet. Duh. I think it's pretty unreasonable to let it go on this long. Sadly, people have pre-ordered the game and have no idea what the final price will be. The damn thing already cost $20 more than any other expansion. I ordered the game under the impression that if I use it as an expansion, there would be no extra charge. I have NO idea where I got that from... I guess I made it up. Today I cancelled my order. Hopefully, other's have done so in large numbers. It's a terrible precedent to set! Title: Re: CoV beta invites going out Post by: HaemishM on September 22, 2005, 01:16:10 PM I'm just not going to pay anymore than the box price to have access to an expansion, no matter how they want to term it as a standalone game. If I can interact with the player base of CoH in anyway, it's a goddamn expansion, NOT a standalone game. You ask me, or even if you didn't, that's the same as the makers of EQ1 saying that in order to play an Iksar or play on the Kunark continent, you had to pay an extra subscription fee. Fuck that.
Title: Re: CoV beta invites going out Post by: Mesozoic on September 22, 2005, 01:31:35 PM Take a moment to imagine the consequences for the industry if CoV adds even $5.00 a month, and people go for it.

I don't like the idea either. I think a lot of people would dislike that sort of precedent and will shun the deal, or possibly the game all together. Hopefully, they'll be vocal about the motivation for their decision. Title: Re: CoV beta invites going out Post by: stray on September 22, 2005, 02:11:08 PM Hopefully, they'll be vocal about the motivation for their decision. Seems to me like a lot of CoH players are apologists for everything Cryptic does. They won't say or do shit. Title: Re: CoV beta invites going out Post by: Signe on September 22, 2005, 03:19:35 PM I know... most people who quit a game, even when there is a principle behind it... simply cancel. Most people never even use the game forums socially or to voice concerns. The people on both the CoH and the CoV beta boards who actually voice any displeasure are almost immediately beaten down until they wander off, except for a brave few. (not me! I'm too lazy to be brave!) They are both the most preachy boards I've ever been on, too. I have never seen so many people yell about repeat threads, not using search properly, asking too many questions, all sorts of stuff... they invariably end in a lecture about "what a beta tester is". Sanctimonious twats.
Title: Re: CoV beta invites going out Post by: Llava on September 22, 2005, 03:26:40 PM Heh. In two separate threads I had to argue the validity of my points, and explain that it was, in fact, my responsibility to raise these issues as a beta tester. I love the people who think "constructive criticism" means "shut your goddamn mouth unless you have something nice to say."
Title: Re: CoV beta invites going out Post by: Mesozoic on September 22, 2005, 04:47:36 PM I don't like the idea either. I think a lot of people would dislike that sort of precedent and will shun the deal, or possibly the game all together. Hopefully, they'll be vocal about the motivation for their decision. I remember people saying this to Origin (in mags) in '97. And I think there's a lot of room for additional fees in the mind of the average subscriber. Title: Re: CoV beta invites going out Post by: Alkiera on September 23, 2005, 06:08:47 AM Signe, Llava, did either of you read the beta forums for Shadowbane, or SWG? They were at least as bad, if not worse.
Then again, I tend to only read dev posts, and the architype forums. The AT forums tend to stay pretty sane, really... have have useful info/discussion. I only read general chatter HERE when I'm bored... I'd need to have a death wish before I'd read it on a game's forums. Title: Re: CoV beta invites going out Post by: Signe on September 23, 2005, 07:33:47 AM Yes, I've read all of those and they're all nasty. Game boards are nasty as a rule. I don't remember any board, however, being as preachy as CoV and CoH, however. Especially considering they're not particularly busy. The lectures are even worse than those on the Horizons board. The CoV board probably has more posts lecturing people on how to post and what a beta tester is than it has bug posts. At least the WoW and SB boards made me laugh now and then.
Title: Re: CoV beta invites going out Post by: AOFanboi on September 23, 2005, 09:20:43 AM If NCSoft go monthly fee+$X for CoH + CoV, people might move to AO + NW + SL + AI + LE at monthly fee +$0. It already has the mission buildings, after all. :) AO plus the first expansions (Lost Eden isn't out yet) is a $10 purchase.
Or even - dare I say it - SW:G + JtL + RotW (also relatively cheap in the combined edition) at monthly fee +$0. Or a Station Pass at monthly fee +$little for quite some variety of games. Hell, NCSoft is the only non-SOE company that has enough games to make a Station Pass like thingy themselves. Just get with the program already.
