In the spirit of the "things I love" thread, list things you always wanted to do but that somehow just slipped away with time. This is not a thread for bathing in regret, but to cause some reflection that might actually get you off your ass to do it.

1) Focus more (which would be any) on sports in high school. I really miss the competition of physical sports now.

That's about it. I'm pretty happy wth my life and the people in it. That doesn't mean I don't want more, but most of that I'm trying to get set up to do now.

1) Drive a big rig
2) Save a life
3) Shoot under par in golf
4) Make a hole in one
5) Follow a hockey team for an entire season
6) Take a ride in a submarine
7) Get into a battle of wits involving wine and iocaine powder

If you ever make it out here to Oregon, Eugene area, look me up.  My Uncle owns a fleet of these (including a drag racer).

Have one more child. 

I think I've done everything else I've wanted to.  This one is more or less out of my control... well, without some serious ethical issues. 

Get a Doctorate (probably not going to happen unless I win the lotto)
Learn to play piano at a high level (just fart around now, can read the music just not comfortable with it)
Shoot under-par for an entire round in golf (stuck in the 80's)
Pilots license is, I think, do able just have to find time for it.
Been to five continents two to go (SA and Antartica).
I've swum in most of the major oceans and seas, always looking for more though.

Learn to play a musical instrument. That's about the only thing I would really like to do that I never have, plenty of time left though I suppose...

1) Be three feet tall

1.  Be a paleontologist, or other elite scientist.  Yeah, I'm a dork.
2.  Get a bachelor's degree.
3.  Be a race car driver, preferably F1.
4.  Visit the moon.  Mars, too, while I'm at it.
5.  Play all of the games I want.
6.  Design and build my own aircraft.

1. Fly a science mission for NASA
2. Stay in school for studio engineering (my only regret in life, in fact, was dropping out of music school..my band broke up a year later...)
3. Take up acting while I was in LA. Not like Sam Jackson stuff, more like Victor Wong or Al Leong...a guy everyone knows by face, but not by name. Making a living being a bit actor kinda thing.
4. Stuntman. I think that or comedian were my real callings.

Let's not start a list of things we accomplished (that most people fantasize about), though. I think there are still a few statutes of limitations that haven't run out on me yet :P

1) Fly combat aircraft/helicopters for the military
2) Design, build, and sell my own game
3) Play an instrument really well (can play some guitar and tinker on piano, but thats it)
4) Get a Masters in History and/or Literature
5) Teach one of the above

For those of you listing pilot's license (fixed wing or helicopter) all I can say is: DO IT. It's _totally_ worth it and doesn't cost *that* much. Also, look into the new Sport Pilot's license (fixed wing only, I think) - it's cheaper to learn and fly if you just want to do it for fun.

Yegolev: If you lived in Colorado, I might be interested in a partner to help me build an airplane (kit though, not designed from scratch).   8-)

1) Should have learned to sing at much earlier age. I've never been much into singing except in the past 5 years. My songwriting would have been a lot more realized if that wasn't the case. Plus, I wouldn't have to depend on a stinkin' band every time I wanted to play out.

2) Seconded on the sports in school thing. Specifically basketball. I would have at the very least had a few scholarships if I had not been such a jackass in highschool (jackass is hardly the word). It's tragic, really. From ages 12-17 I fucked up on a GRAND scale. My life is pretty much full of regrets.

I want to travel someplace where they have never seen a white person.

Head down to Vietnam and visit anywhere outside of a major tourist spot. It's not quite all it's cracked up to be though, fucking kids like to try and pluck your arm hair to see if it's real.

1) Get out of the country for one vacation - Difficult with kids and a wife who thinks money grows on trees.
2) Drop the 35 pounds I need to hit a reasonable 200.
3) Send the wife to college
4) Go back in time and take the ex up on that 'omg I'll set-up a 3-some if you don't leave me' deal.  THEN leave her.
5) Perhaps get a masters in some IT/ Computer Science since the damn profession appeals to me more than my current one.

I wish you the best on this one, for your health. I too have been on a diet of late, and I can say I'm having favorable results with South Beach. It sucks for about two weeks HARD, but then you add things back and you're fine. I've also got a trainer to help with exercise, and that's very motivational. This last month I've dropped from 201 to 192 pounds. I'm aiming for exactly your goal of 35 pounds.

Heh, I'm 5'9" and a fireplug. And you're right, I'm really gunning for 170, but it sounded better if we matched up exactly. That puts me in the right BMI.

165-170 isn't that skinny. I'm 5' 10" 1/2 (yes and 1/2 DAMN IT!), pretty muscular, and I weigh 165 or so. Part of that is that whenever I'm depressed, tired, run down or stressed I basically stop eating. (When I was a grad student I had to poke a new hole in my belt) I can wear all the same clothes I did in high school. One thing I don't do is eat a lot of sugar.

As far as things I want to do, I've always wanted to be in a band (and was very very briefly) but have never really had the time, plus I tend to have a shizoid personality. (Doesn't like to do things with other people)

My advice --- Do it. It's a lot more simple than it may seem at first. You can count on that. Just spend a few hundred on gear, and learn a few chords. You'll be able to play a song (without making people puke) within a year (If it's drums, I won't bullshit you. That takes much more practice).

Are drums hard if you have rythm? I can sing pretty well and at various points in my life played trumpet, tuba and bass guitar, I have a pretty good sense of rythm and melody overall. I also like noisy music so drums seem ideal.

I was in a band briefly in college but it really sucked because nobody wanted to practice and always came up with lame excuses like "I have prelims to study for." (Cough cough) Now I don't know anybody who would be interested so if I wanted to be in a band I would have to hook up with some random people which seems weird.

But I say this to everyone who dreams of saving a life on a ledge dangling by a thread when the police and news watch on :  Go give blood as you're saving a life just as heroically.  Sure, no-one really knows you helped, but if that's why you want to do it, well, Hell, I don't even want to know you.

I have a good sense of rhythm too, but I wouldn't necessarily say that's the main task with drums (funny as that sounds). There's a rhythm and beat in all music, but it's percieved in a different way with non-percussive instruments.

Anyways, I've played the guitar and bass for something like 15 years now, keyboard/piano for a little less, and various other things....But drums are a bitch. It's a "pat your head, rub your stomach" kind of thing. I can program synths and drum machines, so it's not my lack of rhythm. It's the multitasking that's a barrier for me.

With a guitar, for example, you might be plucking the strings with one hand, and fretting the notes with another, but it's all more organic and feels like one task. Both actions are working towards the same note. With drums, the high hat is at a different speed than the snare or bass drum (and vice versa), and all of the little effects like toms and chimes are doing their own thing as well. Some people are just good at that kind of stuff though, and pick it up fast. I just know that I'm not one of them.

Heh, I've got a friend who's really good at the drums. Funny thing is, he's also dyspraxic. It doesn't seem to stop him being able to multi-task and paly well but it does mean that he just lets go of his sticks every 15 minutes or so.

Add me to the list of people who dream of going into space but almost certainly never will. Almost all of my other dreams are either unobtainable because of genetics (e.g. sports stuff) or lack of certain talents (e.g. music stuff) or are obtainable if only I would get off my lazy ass. Going into space, though, even if I had tons of money would be tough to fulfill.

They had no problem with me opening the door and looking inside and taking pictures....but they snagged me as I went to take a seat at the helm. Some of the best leather I have ever felt....

4) Fly a jet fighter. There's still an outside chance I may do this if I end up doing a spat in the Air Force...but I'm only going in if I can actually be a pilot.

5) Be in a Decent feature film. In my mind, I can act...it just doesn't come out very well.

6) Play in a NHL game as a Flyer. Not going to happen.

7) Play running back in HS. I most likely could have done this, but I despised the idea of having to stay so late after school for practice, and then tale a bus home. Also,
group showers don't go over well with me.

8) Actually have a date in high school. Durka Dur.

9) Play some heavy bass in a band. My friend tried to teach me guitar at some point. Not. Gonna. Happen.

10) Slug some of those bastards from high school. Hehehe.

Yeah, that's one more for my list, but a bit of a twist, since I can sing (ok): I wish I could sing and play at the same time. I can't for the same reason I can't seperate my right hand and foot when playing drums:

And I'm actually pretty good on the drums, I tend to focus on the musically (playing bass professionally helped that, too), and I also used to room with our drummers, so every morning I would work through rudiments on the snare pads with them (we went through a few drummers).

I think I want to find one of those wacky 'percussionists' to jam with. I'd play traditional drums, but with a catch: they'd play the cymbal beats :) And bongos and cowbell and whatnot.
You don't need talent to have a great time playing music and you'll still get laid. Hell, I've seen drop-tune bands that can't even finger a friggin' chord or play a solo. It's all one-finger three-string power chords, the most basic and easy thing you could play. A little palm muting and a decent drummer and it's actually not too bad.

Oh I can play an instrument decently if I wanted to (played the cello for 9 years or so and noodled around on the guitar in college so I have some musical aptitude) but fantasy-wise I'm talking like being able to play the guitar like Alex de Grassi or even somebody like Paul Simon or Stephen Stills or being able to sing like Bono and that would take real talent and the right kind of genetics.

Well, comparing yourself to anyone probably isn't going to help. You can only be you. The best artists bank on that. Maybe genetics has something to do with it, but I think it's just more about finding one's voice. The rest is just luck.

You mentioned Bono, and he's a good example of that (actually, it applies to early U2 as a whole). I remember reading the Edge talking about when they first started out. How they were completely pathetic, couldn't play their instruments, couldn't play anybody's songs, etc.. He could barely get a grasp of chords, couldn't play catchy leads --- But he did have a knack for messing with an echo pedal. He made it an instrument in and of itself. So they decided to just do whatever it was that they did.

Eventually, if you just roll with an idea, things start to click.
 
With your musical experience, you're probably better than you think. I hear people all the time who are good, but many of them just beat themselves up or let the truly good ideas pass them buy. Some guy, for example, may be jamming Dylan, then bust into something else real quick --- but then stop himself. Because it didn't sound like Dylan. "Oh, sorry, got a little distracted there..." To which I say, "Fuck me! That was great. That was better than Dylan. Let's do that instead."

Anyways....That's how I see it. A great musical idea comes out of thin air, and you've got to snatch it for yourself. Because it's gone in a flash. And the more preconceptions and ideals about it (or any art for that matter) one has, the harder it's going to be to recognize the good stuff when it hits. In that state of mind, you're only looking for Dylan, or Hendrix, or Lennon, or Ozzy, or Neil Young, or Petula Clark.  :roll: Whoever. Everyone except yourself.

I'm with Stray on that one. Trying to emulate other players never really works, I get so tired of trying to learn the exact notes of a solo when I can simply improv one that has the same feel as the original, using touchstone phrases to keep it tied to the song. A good example of that is "Since I've Been Loving You", on of my favorite jams, because that's how Pagey plays it himself. Listen to a few live recordings and compare it to the album and you can see what I mean by touchstone phrasing.

One reason I don't play out much (at all for the last couple months) is that everyone seems to expect you to play album cuts. I hardly know any songs in their entirity, I just like to jam along with. Hell, I was watching a Sun Records special last night and played for a couple hours along with some of that great rock and roll stuff. Goddamned small town thinking.

One exception to this idea of simply being yourself, for me, is while I don't want to sound like the greats, whether it be Page or Scotty Moore, I want to be at that level of competence. To me, I will suck until I can clearly play the music I hear in my head rather than just playing licks strung together, and be able to play any song I know the melody to, not by memorization but by sheer competency on the instrument.

I need to practice more, heh. But that's the kick: I don't know any guitarists who are satisfied with the way they play.

Oh, I forgot about that one. I've been saying I want to do that to all my friends irl and whatnot, but I keep forgetting that sort of shit online.

Whoosh! It's nice you two are trying to be all encouraging but you are missing my point. It might be more clear I gave an example of a sports fantasy that'll never happen: winning the Tour de France. That's the kind of grandiose, farfetched dream I put into the "unobtainable" category because of a lack of certain genetics and/or talent and my "music stuff" reference is along those same lines. I'm not talking about, say, learning the rhythm guitar well enough to play in a local band -- that's the kind of thing that falls into my "obtainable if I would only get off my lazy ass" category. But something like relearning the cello well enough to play the Bach Cello Suites at a sold out concert in Carnegie Hall? Ain't going to happen.

Probably not. But, there are many who could qualify to play that gig -- and still never will get the chance. Carnegie Hall is out of your control, but playing like you could play at Carnegie Hall isn't.  :wink:

Ah Journey...my favorite band in high school. Missed them on their Frontiers tour but I got to see them on their Raised on Radio one. They were awesome live -- Neal was totally rocking out (on his new personal line of guitars) and he took extended solos on what felt like half the songs. That was the tour where Randy Jackson was playing bass (Ross and Steve weren't on that tour), for those of you who watch American Idol. Man if only I could sing as well as Steve or play guitar as well as Neal :wink:

I think I mentioned that I was at a punk show (well...the 'new' punk...pop stuff more like it) a couple weeks ago that had Journey's greatest hits looped over the PA before they went on. I serenaded my girl pretty loudly (and not too bad, heh). Now I make a point of singing her Journey stuff regularly, in addition to a ton of cheesy tunes. She asked me last night if I knew any 'good' songs...apparently I don't :)

But keep in mind that old houses aren't that bad unless you have mold allergies. We have lots of it in Oregon, and old houses are particularly rife with it.

I'm all about secret passages around the house. They are drawn into almost every floor plan I've come up with so far (I'm hoping to start building my own house within the next few years).

There's a secret passage in the house I'm in now. It's pretty simple. It runs from the office to one of the upstairs guest bedrooms via a hidden popout wall and a movable 4 foot bookshelf on wheels at the other. I freaked the hell out of one of my friends popping out of the wall while he was watching television. He almost fell over the coffee table jumping up in fright.

Eh...It's not really a manual. Get the real deal by Ferro. Hell, even stage fighting manuals are more helpful than that (especially for dualing/rapier oriented swordplay). The techniques taught to actors can be traced farther into the past than that guy's book (I'm not saying to learn from that either though. Heh).

Stage fighting != real fighting.

You missed my point. I'm just saying that stage fighting is grounded far more into what "was" rapier fighting than that book is. That's how unhelpful it is. A 70 year old Christopher Lee would kick the shit out of some renfaire kid who learned from that book. He seems to treat the subject like it can be taught 1) alone 2) like it's all a matter of attacking. Much like the thousands of shitty martial arts books out there. Rapiers, out of all western fighting styles, is mostly defensive. It's 90% guarding and footwork. And almost every cut and thrust is tied into that.

Not to say one couldn't win a fight by being aggressive. You could. It's just that that isn't exactly "Renaissance Swordsmanship". That's like the "Cobra Kai", but with rapiers.
