You could also get a superior late-60's pony car also for $32k. A very Nice one at that.

And for a few grand more, you can get a 2007 (or 2008?) SVT Shelby GT500.

The whole fucking video was gratuitious, especially the music, which made a cheesy song shitty. It's the kind of video you watch with the sound muted.

Also, I hope you are not confusing "ricers" with "today's muscle."

One person's boat is another's long, sleek, and macho.  With a racing suspension their's nothing slushy about the handling.

The GT has the lines but it's stubby.  Even so it visually beats out the travesty that Pontiac calls their current Ge.. Gee... gawd I can't bring myself to even say it.

Disgusting.

I agree that the Pontiac is a travesty.

It's supposed to be a premium model. It looks like a standard GrandPrix, mostly.

Sports cars don't use the same fucking bodies as daily driver family cars for a reason....

Because they are ugly.

Yes that F-Type is sweet.  A little too much of the vette silhouette but overall very nice lines.  Nice referback to the Es.  Nothing attracted the ladies like me tooling around in my old man's 1978 XJS ragtop.

Yea, the RX-7, Supra, and NSX sure are ugly. The Japanese have just as many beautiful cars, just not as many classic muscle beautiful cars. Because we bombed them to hell and back. If they were making cars as long as us I'm sure they'd have them too.

If my performance in Juiced is any indication, I should never be put behind the wheel of a rear-wheel drive sports car.

Title: Re: Boss Hog Blogs
Post by: Strazos on August 01, 2005, 03:30:22 PM
Cars that do not put power to the rear wheels are not true sports cars.

I'm looking at YOU, Ricers.

It's a simple matter of physics. When a car accelerates, the weight load, because of inertia, has it's center of gravity shift towards the rear of the car. A few things to think about:

Can you think of any Supercars that use FWD, or even 4WD/AWD?

Indy, Nascar, etc all use RWD for a reason. Hell, even the drifting that the import crowds love so much can only be down with a RWD vehicle.

Title: Re: Boss Hog Blogs
Post by: stray on August 01, 2005, 04:02:18 PM
My friend bought an STI several months ago (I'm not sure what year, but I think it's a limited run model, in black and gold), and as far as awd's go, hell yeah I'd take it. I'm not a big fan of ricers at all, but I'll make an exception in that case. It may or may not be a sports car, but I do know that he hasn't been burned yet, whether on the street or in weekend races (it probably helps that he's a completely insane bastard when it comes to driving).

Title: Re: Boss Hog Blogs
Post by: Strazos on August 01, 2005, 04:05:15 PM
I have nothing against the STI; it's a good vehicle.

4WD/AWD has its own set of problems though, which usually come down to added weight and power distribution. For instance, some times, you need a Little bit of wheel spin, but in AWD, you dno't really get that, and bog Badly.

There's also the bit about buying something that will hold or appreciate in value, opposed to losing a huge chunk of value for driving it off the lot.

You got me there.  Congrats on having free time.  If I were able to get into restoration, I have a '63 Falcon within reach.  Or maybe the '78 Aspen I used to drive, since that slant-six is an awesome engine.  Plus it has red plaid upholstery and faux-wood sidepanels.  It is simply because I don't have the time or energy for that stuff; my dad was a mechanic and has all of the equipment you need to work on an old engine.

I actually drive a '03 Ram 1500 pickup, at very high speeds, in downtown ATL and points west.  There are times when I wish I had something smaller and more maneuverable, like the WRX STi.  Or a bike.  Or a flying car.  You have to drive the machine you have, though.

Title: Re: Boss Hog Blogs
Post by: Polysorbate80 on August 04, 2005, 10:02:49 AM
Never had any problems with maneuverability, if you discount the one parallel-parking incident I had a couple months after I bought my pickup and was still getting used to the size :)

Although, it is a miracle I never drove over my neighbor's moped.  I park on the street in front of my house, and the bastard used to park that thing about a foot in front of (or behind) my pickup, where it was completely obscured once I was in the cab.

Never had any problems with maneuverability,

Depends on your notion of a "problem".  I don't want to be immodest, but I can put that extended-cab into places most people would not dream of putting a Miata, generally ten or fifteen mph above the posted limit, too.  I love the Dodge truck because of it's amazing drivability and how the controls are so responsive; when I drive a Ford or Chevy I tend to weave and brake too late.

It's just that I have reached the limits of what I can do with this machine, particularly when cornering.  The tradeoff with something smaller is that to successfully drive in the ATL, you almost need an offroad vehicle in places.  A rally-ish car like the WRX seems like a good compromise.  I also miss my stick shift.

You brought up the maneuverability bit, sounded like it was a problem at times for ya, guess I misread :)  As I said, the only trouble I've ever had was easily fixed with $30 worth of paint.

I likes me my truck.

If you get a hybrid make sure you get a good warranty on the battery cells. Up north in wisconsin they have had some issues such as estimated time between replacements of the 7k battery of every 3 years.

My friend got one and managed to get a 10 year warranty on the battery cell so at least if he has problems he can point at them and laugh as they have to pony the cash for it.

Frankly if you want a car that gets very good milage look into the little volkswagon disel's. Those things gas milage is often BETTER than the hybrids and a good deal cheaper.

That's what I commute with - Passat TDI.  I average 75mph with the A/C blowing full blast and get 40mpg.  If I baby it the average is around 44mpg.  Punchy little car too.

You should try Portland. Then you wouldn't hafta pay sales tax either!

I'm pretty sure Washington would force him to pay sales tax on it before licensing it.

They do - you just need to pay VDL off a bit to keep it in her name and keep it licensed in Oregon.

And they don't have the grunt, or the looks, I am looking for. They're either lame little econoboxes, are ugly small-size SUV's. Ick.

You should talk! Washington is Oregon's white-trash cousin, and no one there can drive (except Seattlites. Is that what they're called? Well, it should be.). And our plates are fine, thank you very much! I like salmon.

BTW, Sauced and I are coming up for a few days after Labor Day Weekend. We should all go to the Garage or something for drinks.

I really like my Saturn and haven't had any problems with it so far. My sister's last 2 cars (She leases, sucker.) also haven't ever had any problems. I got a 2002 previously-leased SE 300 with full features and 22k miles for 12.5. (only suckers buy new)  I don't treat cars nice or drive them short trips, either.  I've already put another 20k miles on it in that timeframe.

The Honda Accords we looked at were 7k more for older cars (2000 or 2001) with higher milage (35+k).  We went on a day it was raining and they all had trunks full of water and rust spots around the seal.  Two of the three "Honda Certified Vehicles" also wouldn't start without being jumped.

Yeah, I'll pass on Honda, thx.

(Oh, as for Hybrids, yes they don't sell in the Midwest.  The dealer we went to was Cincy's biggest Honda dealer and they had 2 they were trying to move.  They said not many people were interested/ asking about them when we inquired.)

Or get a one-hour-one-way commute.  I used to like driving.  Now I just want to spend less that $40 a week on gas and/or less than ten hours a week behind the wheel.

Well, since this topic is sufficiently off course...

This last year we decided to buy a new car.  It would be for my wife because, well, her's was 6 years older.  We looked at a ton of stuff: hybrids, SUVs, and sports/luxury cars.  The hybrids just got too expensive too fast.  You got less car for the money and really, some of them had some really annoying drawbacks.  The Accord had a miniscule trunk and no folding seats due to the ginormous battery in the back.  The Prius was a fucking cool little car.  But after we drove the TSX a couple times, we wanted something with a bit more guts and we didn't like some of the Prius horror stories.  It came down to being not 100% confident in the technology.

SUVs, well, just didn't impress.  Bad, bad gass mileage was a major turn off.  Plus, they seemed to not have a lot of get up probably due to them weighing a ton.  The Highlander was a nice SUV though.  We came close to buying one with the Toyota people throwing ridiculous deal after ridiculous deal in our faces.  They pissed me off though, they probably would have sold me a car if they didn't keep me hostage in the damn dealership for like 2 hours. I JUST WANTED LUNCH, YOU DICKS.

This is what we ended up getting:

Acura TSX (http://www.acura.com/models/model_index.asp?module=tsx)

Beautiful car.  All of the bells and whistles. 200 HP 4-cylinder.  Makes me not hate driving.  The sports suspension takes a little getting used to, but once you've got it, you're just amazed at how responsive the car can be.

Next car we'll revisit the hybrid option and maybe even a hybrid SUV if our family situation warrants it.  Hopefully the technology will be along a little farther and not so much of a goddamned price hike.  My 2002 Civic should last for another 5-8 years.  The thing is, the TSX has really ruined my car expectations and desires.  I really like having a car with a lot of juice and all of the trappings.  Downgrading to something more utilitarian would be difficult.

Not in regards to your automobile choice, at any rate. =)

My Ram 1500 gets 15.5 mpg if I don't run the A/C.  This translates to, as I mentioned, over $40 per week for fuel simply to commute.  If I could convince my boss to let me work from home all the time, I could use that money to buy crap from the EB discount bin.

Heh, 22/31 isn't HORRIBLE.  It just pales in comparison to what a Prius might get.  We actually had a Prius ordered, but taking the TSX on the freeway sealed the deal.

Still, I don't own a ginormous truck or a 70's muscle car, so I guess I'm doing a bit better than Joe Sixpack.

Why does this country push Hummers and SUVs when we're in the middle of a fuel crisis? Or in the middle of global warming? (remember, pink is blatantly obvious)

Shitty mileage is forgiveable in older cars, I guess, 'cuz they have character. My old '78 Buick Limited used to take $5/day in gas just for the 30-mile round trip to school and back. But she was purty, so I coughed it up. (her name was the Mothership Connection) But in new vehicles? That's just a sin. Portland is very bicycle and pedestrian friendly, with an awesome public transit system, so I haven't needed to own a car in ten years.

I think I get something like 40/50 in practice.  It would probably be closer to the advertised gas mileage if there weren't so many stop signs in my part of town.

I use Premium fuel, exhaust, and have a better-than-average Fuel Injection System, so I'm not nearly as bad as the retards in SUV's and large trucks.

Also, as I've said before, I could never hope to attempt to use public transportation; it just doesn't exist where I live.
