I'll be done with it in a day anyway.

Weehoo.

Wait.. XBox 360?

There will be no XBox 360 in this house.

Why? RE4 was Baby-Jesus-on-a-Gamecube.   :rock_hard:

And SPT, they said PS3 also.  Unless you're anti-console, then you're just going to have to wait for a port or get nothing and like it.

I am moist with anticipation.

And my dear, there WILL be a 360 in the house... eventually. When they don't cost $300.

Hot diggity damn! If it's 75% as good as RE4 it alone will make buying a PS3 worth it. ( Any less and I demand more quality titles for the machine )

We need yet another gaming system in this house? We are already a giant ball of wires.

I imagine Snowbeast could remedy that problem fairly quickly.

She could but she is behaving quite nicely at the moment. She isn't chewing anything, just sleeping. She's waiting until midnight when she goes into a frenzy and freaks out biting everything that moves (or doesn't).

You will change your tune when you join the rest of us in having actually played RE4.  I hate all the other RE games.  RE4 is so incredible... words fail.  Fucking regenerators!  Nightmarish!

About the shots, are they giving us a dirtier protagonist, a la Warrior Within?  That might not be a big deal in the final cut, but I don't like the way that smells.  Of course they could scrap the game after two years and start over.

Best
Game
Evar

Not terribly long, and there isn't much replay, but just the way the game was put together was an OMFG.  I normally prefer games with lots of replay - hence addiction to MMOGs or multiplayers.  But when you play, you have to play with surround, and at night.

Oh, and there is a trailer for RE5 at IGN now.

Well if RE5 takes about the same time to develop as RE4, than we should be seeing it released sometime in 2009.

Well if RE5 takes about the same time to develop as RE4, than we should be seeing it released sometime in 2009.
The reason RE4 took so long is because they were mostly done with a more traditional RE title (which looked fucking amazing by the way, and had hook-weilding ghosts, possessed dolls, even better looking graphics, etc) when the director decided he was sick of the traditional RE approach and basically said "YOU ALL STAAAAAAAT OVA!", and made them start over from scratch.

If it doesn't have Ms. Webb masturbating with a PS3 controller it's not worth watching. Nothing on Xplay or G4 or TechTV related to gaming is worth watching. I have to constantly remind customers that watching TV for gaming information makes them and their friends look retarded. In those words.

They did a similar thing with RE2 as well just not to that extent.  Actually from what I've seen, they started over on RE4 a couple of times.  I still expect RE5 to be years away unless they want to fall back into giving us crap like RE3 and RE Zero again.

Also, Morgan Webb is NOT HAWT. She is scrawny, and annoying.

I dunno, tv gaming shows are valuable for one reason: you get to see the gameplay in action without downloading a shitload of trailers and gameplay videos (which often require signing up or joining a site, as I'm not in the warez/bittorrent circles). I enjoy Judgement Day from G4, though I've always found X-Play (oh god, why did they not just keep the Extended Play title...) annoying.

But I do think Morgan is hawt.

For whatever it's worth there are people like my dad out there who don't really go online or pick up gaming mags.  He does watch a lot of TV though and G4 is where he finds out abouts games.  It's what made him pick up Destroy All Humans, Burnout 3, and Outlaw Golf 2, all of which he liked, so it at least serves some purpose.

Yes, pretty much everything on the channel is useless tripe. The G4TV.COM "interview" with Yee (D-CA)? USELESS.

Tina Wood: "Are you yourself a gamer, sir?"

Yee: "Um, no I am not."

Fucktard.

Yes.  I think RE4 is better than God of War.  It is a reason to buy a Cube.  You'll want one of the old prog-scan ones if you can get it.

About G4.  I watch Cinematech, nothing else.  Morgan is, at best, a three-bagger.  I'd have to murder her Kuato-like sidekick first, probably with Morgan's razorlike joints or brain-rending speech.  Her best trait is that I can't understand a god-damned thing she says.

She looks better with clothes on. I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's just something unattractive about her. As in terribly unattractive about her. Maybe it's that she has more manly edges than that short girl in that countrywestern group with those 3 women where one of them has scary manhands.

Wow, that post was terrible.

Edit: Yup, it's her torso, I fear it. The shoulders should be in a football game.

She is malproportioned. Almost freakishly so. And every word that comes out of her mouth sounds like she's trying REALLY REALLY HARD to be hip and cool and funny. But she's not. She sounds like she had scripts written by the marketing guy who skims the Vault board looking for what's edgy.

I just want to say that I really dislike every single Resident Evil game made.

Except Resident Evil 4.

My god.

That game kicked so much ass.  I generally have a high tolerance for freaky shit that doesn't involve evil little girls (Exorcist/The Ring), but jesus this game scared the hell out of me sometimes.  And what's even more amazing, the game is just as fun to watch as it is to play.  There were times when I had spectators and I almost wanted to hand the controller to someone else just so I could relax a bit and stop being so freaked out.

Regenerators made both my girlfriend and my brother scream out loud at certain moments.

Personally, for me, it was the blind dudes with the claws that did it.  "eeeeeeeeee! please go away, stop following me, i can't run because you'll hear the steps and decapitate me but you keep getting closer and i can't move and oh my god there's another one right over there eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee omigod a bell <shoot> AHH I MISSED RUN AWAY RUN AWAY shhh shh shhh quietly, quietly... quietly run away"

Sadly (or not), the best picture I can find of a regenerator is only half of a regenerator.

The worst part must be the SOUND it makes.  Gah!

Title: Re: Resident Evil 5 announced.
Post by: Llava on July 28, 2005, 06:39:26 PM
The worst part is the trick it pulls on you.

"Oh, I can blow off its limbs.  Okay, I'll shoot out its legs, and that'll slow does its progress enough that I'll have all the time I could need to finish it off.  And besides, it's not like it can attack me while flopping around on the ground, ho ho ho!"

I still get creeped out thinking about when that first one started chomping on Leon's neck.  Horrible.  There are enemies that are more difficult to defeat (El Gigante?), but after that first encounter -- when you don't have any means of killing them -- that wheezing sound makes my hair stand up.  Everything about them is disturbing to me.  Remember the freezer?  I was more willing to enter a room with two garradors.

Plus the game has probably one of the best boss fights in any game, ever.

Two if you include the cutscene knife fight.

Too bad the final battle was kinda lame, though.

Ha ha, that reminds me of playing Resident Evil 3 with my friend for the first time. He fought Nemesis and was getting his ass kicked so he ran into another room, put down the controller for a minute and relaxed - then we heard the creak of the door, the music started again, and my friend actually yelled and pushed start, handed me the controller and said he couldn't play anymore. (It was the first ResEvil where a guy could follow you into another room)

But yeah, RE4 is good. Actually I like them all for the most part. RE1 Remake was a real achievment graphically.

I'll second the above - the blind guy with claws and the regens were nightmarish.  First time I saw the blind guy all locked up it was all "oh shit, this is really bad".  You *knew* he was going to come get you, but not much you could do about it.  Or the first time you meet up with a regen; I kept emptying my shotgun, trying to find a way to kill it / escape all the while screaming in my head "IT WON'T DIE!!".  The game is so good at generating a sense of panic and realism that's incredible.

Also loved the way they changed gameplay, such as with the knife fight, the dodge scenes, or the lake monster.  They were constantly doing things to keep the game from turning into tedium like that, or else by introducing new monsters at just the right moment.  Like when it turned night, and the things started comming out of their exploded heads - "what the hell is THAT?!".

Only complaint is that it was too short, but it comes back to problems of content.  A lot of the joy of the game was the constantly fresh content, which isn't something they could keep up for 60 hours of gameplay.  If they extended gameplay to 60h, it would have required much more repeditive activities or less attention to detail.  Lack of the former, and existance of the latter, were key points to what made the thing good to start with.  Some of the areas were downright hellish.  I mean, the villager's houses were nasty, but the hospital or dungeon areas were ungodly.

That I think is one of the things I really appreciated about RE4. Just when you've got the normal gameplay down, they drop some new whacked out shit on you. The fish monster scene was just awesome fun, and they could have used that mechanic more. The knife fight cutscene was almost brutally frustrating, but at the same time, really wickedly cool. MMOG's could use more specially-designed encounters like those, which curveball you some new gameplay every once in a while to keep things fresh.

I didn't think the game was short at all. I finished the first time through in about 23 hours or so, which these days, is a lot of time. But for this type of game, I really think that's probably about the sweet spot.

Anyone have any regenerator tips?  By the time it gets close enough for me to see and hit the hot spots with my rifle (dammit, why didn't they say at the beginning of the game that I'd need a rifle to progress?  I would have hoarded the damn ammo instead of selling it) it spikes me just at that moment.  The back spot is the worst, I blow out a leg but it still wriggles so much and so fast I have no chance to hit it.  Should I blow every limb off?  Will that cause it to at least stop moving momentarily?

You know the rifle can zoom, right?  Even with the heat sensor thingy.  But yeah, you don't get much time - at all - to pick your spots and drop your target.  You can miss maybe once or twice, and then you're dead.  And then there's the back - you have to nail it quick, because that thing is FAST.  If you do it a couple times though, you can usually gague about where the thing is, and already have your rifle positioned when the spot becomes exposed and it wiggles.  You may also want to lead it a bit, and wait for it to slither into your crosshairs.

Thanks.  I didn't know it could zoom.  No wonder I'm so bad at this, they are practically on top of me before I see the spot.  Again, I just wish I had conserved rifle ammo.  I am at a point crawling with them and bullets are in short supply (spent all my monies on a fully upgraded shotgun and red9, they've seen me through everything so far).

Well, you don't really need any weapon upgrades for your rifle.  You only really use it for headshots or for the regens, and one shot is enough for the leaches.  You may want to upgrade capacity just so that you have enough that you don't need to reload while fighting off a regen, but you normally won't have a need to increase reload speed or firing speed (since it takes so relatively long to reaim after each shot anyhow).

Oh, a cheat if you need it: If you buy ammo capacity upgrades, it will refresh the bullets in your gun.  So if you have 2/5, and upgrade capacity, you'll have 7/7, or whatever it comes out to.  Isn't a lot, but if you're in a *serious* bind, it can work.  You can sell / buy back your gun to same effect, but all of this can be expensive.

I hardly ever finish games, but I am on my second play of RE4.  Here are some terrible tips.

1.  Don't be like me and not think to EQUIP your stock on the Red9 until the middle of Chapter 5.
2.  Alternatively, be like me, using the Red9 sans-stock the whole game so that you become a crack shot.
3.  When using the rifle on the regenerators, do not miss.
4.  If you have the cash, get the semi-auto rifle.  If not, get it anyway.
5.  Get all of the bottle caps.
6.  To get the back parasite on the spike regenerators, blow off a leg.  Also see #3.
7.  You can actually kill the parasites without the scope, but it's mostly luck since you can't see them.
8.  Only use magnum ammo on bosses.

Use a rocket launcher on Salazar.

Just shoot the mouth thingy enough that the vulnerable spot with Salazar opens up, and send him a rocket to play with.  One shot kill.

I didn't want to get too detailed, but yeah.  One shot from a magnum to the eye (mouth?), then a rocket to the midget.

Why kill that thing?  I know you can and it drops stuff, but I just iced him and ducked into the elevator.  Need the ammo.

Never thought of escape!  Dangit!  Not that I missed the 30k, really.

If you "just don't miss" then your ammo problems will be much less pronounced.  My other solution, besides being stingy and using the knife at times, was to carry several guns so I could spread out the ammo usage.  Red9, semi-auto, Striker, and Butterfly is my spread.  Grenades are for the women-folk.

I feel obligated to kill bosses like that.  If I don't, I feel incomplete at the end of the game.  You can tell I play RPGs.

Well, you almost have to "just don't miss" to survive; if your kill hit ratio drops close to or below around 75% for long, you'll be reaching for your knife.  And yeah, I carried all the guns (or best ver of each type) as soon as I could buy them, except the magnum.  Too many upgrades I wanted, and not enough magnum bullets to warrant the space one more gun would take, imo.  I loved grenades; flash grenades would insta-kill those things popping out of head sockets, which could save shells if there were a couple of them around.  Mainly though, I used them on bosses because grenades HURT, and I could toss a bunch in short order.  Also found use in the cottage when it was getting overrun, and two or three other times when there were a huge mass of baddies.

Another thing you can do to save ammo is to notice when there are things in your environment you can use as weapons.  For example, when the chief fight is going on, there is a second exposive barrel nearby you can shoot to hurt him.  There are also hanging oil lamps that you can shoot, that drop on whoever is below to torch them.  I usually don't notice that kind of stuff until after the fight though, and that's part of what else I like; it really does give a frantic, "OMG quick!" atmosphere.  This game has to be the best example of using the game itself (not cutscenes, the game) to help tell the story.

You hit on the thing that I think is so gripping about RE4 to me.  I am constantly attempting to NOT PANIC in BAD situations while pulling off great gunplay.  Staring down a crowd of ganados or worse, methodically making headshots or tactically taking out a kneecap, or shooting the stick of dynamite someone just tossed at me, all the while resisting the urge to randomly unload my whole clip or run away... awesome.  The fact that the controls don't suck crusty shit really helps out, too.

I find that I really have a way to go skillwise before I can complete Assignment: Ada.  That first encounter with J.J. is pure hell and I have not gotten past him yet.  The worst part for me is that Ada doesn't have a fucking knife.  Stupid bitch.  Need to work on the shoot-shin-then-kick maneuver.
