There's somekind of shrimp or crab that can cock its claw back like a pistol and fire a blast of water (or sound waves?) at a fish, stunning it. Sundiver, though being part of the Uplift universe, is really a nice sci-fi whodunnit. Even if you skip the rest of his works, read that.
