Title: Game of Thrones, Illiterate Edition
Post by: Samwise on April 29, 2013, 01:25:24 PM
This is now the Game of Thrones thread for people who don't want to mingle with those filthy book-readers and/or book-readers who can keep their filthy knowledge appropriately compartmentalized.  Figure out amongst yourselves what the statute of limitation is on show spoilers, but nothing which could only be known by reading the books is permitted here, even within spoiler tags.  Everyone happy with that?

Yay! Although I think it is going to be very lonely in here.

Liked the episode a lot and the HBO CEO of Tits and Asses was on the job.

Well, I appreciate this even though I have basically rid myself of any desire to discuss GoT on F13.  So, there's Gwendoline Christie's ass.

Actually yes, makes sense.  I forget those exist.  Anyhoo, I'm still afraid to make comments because someone will not specifically say anything spoilery but I'll get lots of :oh_i_see: :nda:  ;D :nintendo:

I am thoroughly enjoying the show, especially all the little touches that really bring the world alive onscreen. There's been some brilliant foreshadowing so far in certain points (yeah I'm a filthy book reader ). Every time an episode ends I want it to have continued another hour.

Sansa's story has not progressed for five episodes.  Sure there's been threat of marriages but she's still staring out at the sea.  Otherwise, shit is blowing up everywhere and I'm loving it.

I hope Brienne and Jamie hook up, what a cool, weird relationship.  If they made a TV show with just the Lannisters in a room sneering at each other I'd buy the deluxe Blu-Ray version and write erotic fan fiction.

As for this thread I say spoil away right after the show airs.

Tywin writing letters while verbally eviscerating his children would be a great show.

Good.  Spoil away.  My sister is very into this show so I end up watching it at dinner time or whatever.  I've only seen the last three or four episodes so, although I enjoy it, it doesn't really make much sense to me.  Like, where is that pretty blonde lady taking all those men?

She's building an army to go back and beat down everyone else we've been following around on the show.  She wants to take back the kingdom. Her dad was king two kings ago. That's the guy Jamie one hand killed to save all those people, if you believe him.

That help?

Episode was a setup episode for shit that's going to happen later. I enjoyed it, but it's kind of one of those necessary evils episode. Make a non-actiony droopy episode so that when the shit hits, you know why it hit.

Very enjoyable.  The scene between Tywin and the Queen of Thorns was really good, a clash of the Titans.  Once again Sansa is looking at ships, but from a different perspective this time lol.

Good to see Tyrion and Cersei actually getting along, at least a little bit.  And Jamie and Brienne, with Jamie careful not to overplay his hand. *snerk*

Anytime Varys and Baelish argue is a good time.  Could Baelish be any more obvious about his desire to be king?  I bet he sneaks in at night, sits on the Throne and whacks it.

I felt they missed a really good scene between Joffrey and Ros.

If Twyin lasts through this season I'll eat my hat.

Worst episode of the year by a mile (to be fair, the others have been really good).  The climbing-the-wall scenes were long, tedious, and tension-free.  I think they went to the "gays love fancy clothes!.  No, really, he's a homosexual and is into fashion, get it?.  Seriously brah, he likes having sex with other men, and also likes the frou frou" comedy well four times.

Reinforcing Joffrey-as-psychopath is OK, but making Littlefinger into a comic-book villain seems a little much.  And they killed off the most attractive woman in the show

The Old Man Lanister v Lady Tyrell showdown was entertaining.  Tyrion and Cersei's chat was probably the highlight of the episode.

What the shit? you want MORE of that scene?

Ros was a minor, but re-occurring character seen since the very first episode.  They didn't show them catch her, didn't show Joffrey and a slow buildup to what we knew was going to happen.  Instead we got LOL SAM CAN'T START A FIRE AMIRITE?

It's not about torture porn you wanker, it's about drama.

Sometimes this show misses the really good conversations.  I mean, who else wanted to see Tryion tell Sansa they were to be wed in front of Shae?  Nope, we got Sansa and Loras comparing embroidery tips.  Useless scene because they aren't getting married!

IIRC, the joke was made in at least two other scenes in addition to the Loras-Sansa scene.  Did not get funnier with repetition.

Something I don't understand about various people trying to marry Loras.

Didn't Margery openly tell Sansa that Loras was joining the kings guard (and so she would be protected from Joffery) some weeks ago?

Even if I'm misremembering and Loras was just going to hang out in Kings Landing then that doesn't help Sansa get the fuck out of dodge.

On Loras in general he seems to have lost the simmering air of 'why are we here this is a fuckstupid plan' he had at the start of the season. That was better to watch than the gay jokes.

Some of us can't discuss the series without wanting to puzzle-out how events from the books will work in to the new narrative.  Those who haven't read the books bitched up a storm.  You made your bed, now lie in it.  Just like GOT!

Once again Sansa is looking at ships, but from a different perspective this time lol.

"That ship has sailed"

I was also unimpressed with the Loras scene with Sansa. It could have worked if his orientation was unknown at this point, perhaps having been hinted at by any of the legion of sneaky hinters in King's Landing, but as things stand it's just poor writing.

Zero tension on the wall-climb, which was too bad because everything else about it was excellent. It could have used a misleading prophesy or dream to give the threat some weight.

I'm just going to pretend that was an honest mistake.  :awesome_for_real:

Yeah, show started off really slowly but the Dany and Twyin and the Maiden and Bear scenes saved it.

Gendry has left Kings Landing, gone to Harrenhall, been kidnapped by the Brotherhood Without Banners and BACK to Kings Landing and Brann still hasn't reached the Wall.  :oh_i_see:

So IMDB tells me the guy who plays Hodor, Kristian Nairn, this is his first significant role.  He has nailed Hodor.  And while you might say, its pretty easy to play a guy who only says one word, his timing and curious expression in this week's episode, when Osha is ranting to him about Joyjen and Bran, is perfect.

So Dragon Girl got another free army. Has anyone ever accomplished so much without doing anything for it? She has been put up to such heights, would make a great fall!*

Different topic, when Stannis cursed Joffery, Rob Stark and Theon Grejoy: Why Grejoy? The first two make obvious sense, but what importance has Theon to him?

Edit: Do I sound bitter? Just channeling my inner Cersei here. Sorry.

Edit2: Martin really likes his odd couple theme:  Jamie and Brienne and now Sansa and Tyrion. What's next? Loras and the hound?  :ye_gods:

The leech was burned for Balon Greyjoy, in the eyes of Stannis one of the three false kings, the self styled "King of the Iron Islands", Theon's father

I THINK he has more than one of them.  That was a fun surprise, I thought they had another use.  Sam finally has a good scene.

The episode felt like the calm before the storm.  I kept expecting widespread panic and got awkward marriages; Sansa and Tyrion, Dany and the merc,  Arya and The Hound.
Gendry and Melisandre.  Maybe I'm reaching, but the young folks are really getting exploited in Westeros.

Dany does have a lot of shit fall into her lap.  But I'm enjoying her story, it's a nice change of pace from Westeros.

Stannis gets back in my good graces by showing that he values 'hard truths'.  He's no slave to Melisandre, but he seems realistic in accepting the Lord of Light.

Tyrion gets treated like shit at his own wedding and still is the (drunken) gentleman on his wedding night.  When she said she was 14 I was  :ye_gods:

Speaking of marriages, the Tyrells are now seeing what shitbirds they have aligned themselves with in full.  Joffrey, Cersei and Tywin all show their ass and the more
reserved Tyrells have got to be disgusted.  Or maybe they hide their attitude better.

Good episode, but I'm ready for some payoff instead of all this buildup.  Two weeks to go I guess.

Problem with showing events that lasted a few months in the books stretched out over three TV seasons.  The girl that was just a bit old for the part when you cast her (a young-looking 16 playing a 13 year old) becomes jarringly miscast (a skinny but fully mature 19 year old trying to play 14).

Yeah, forgot about that.  The actress is 17 and since they have bumped up most of the characters ages I subconsciously did so to her as well.  My hope is that Tyrion will teach her the art of intrigue.  Now that she's a Lannister (yech!) she is much more protected and I'd love to see those two crazy kids take over the family.

Martin has admitted he fucked the ages up, expecting time gaps within and between the books to be greater. I just think of all the characters as about their actors ages.

My own personal rationalisation is that westorosi years are longer than earth years. 13 there is 18 here.

Ned seemed very old for 37 when he died.

Poor Mormont's never gettin' any of that dragon ass.  Speaking of ass, Oona (?) Chaplin said in an interview that a GoT actress has said she doesn't want to do anymore nudity.  She wants to be known for her ACTING instead of her body.  Rumor is that it's Emilia Clarke (Dany).

To be quite honest, they are starting to take the piss with the amount of unnecessary nudity they ask of some of the women in this show. I mean, I'm as much in favour of T&A as the next guy, but it got way out of control this season and if Dany in particular has slapped them down then I can't say I blame her.

Sex scenes are fine, who cares.  But really, there are a lot of 'normal' scenes that are taking place in some kind of sexualised backdrop that's utterly unneccesary.  I mean, I love Oonas ass as much as the next man, but did the whole Stark tactics discussion really have to take place with the camera over her half moon ?

That one is particularly egregious because it looks miserable and cold. At least with Dany, she's somewhere you'd want to be in as few clothes as possible and taking a bath every five minutes.

The Second Sons guy can bathe anytime he'd like though. He definitely needs to keep cool and wear as little as possible and it would make a great great opportunity for some equality of nudity.

They have a name that's been coined primarily because of GOT: 'Sexposition'

Exposition alone means your audience's attention wanders.  Add-in sex and they pay rapt attention to the plot details.  It's a weird human behaviour.

I thought Dany stepped out of the bath because she knew he desired her and she wanted to 1.  Show she wasn't some bashful girl and B.  Ensnare him further with her sexual wiles.

She's had Mormont eating out of the palm of her hand for two years hoping for a nip slip.  She figures to do it again.

Yeah, I know, the illiterate thread.  But just saying the book made out her reasons to be mainly 2, since she caught on to how much he liked her and hoped to keep him tagging along loyaly.

So there was reason, just to ease all of the illiterates minds a bit.   :awesome_for_real:

Just watched episode 9. Ugh.

Due to the offering-to-the-king-of-light-scene I knew Rob Stark, that Grejoy guy and Goffrey were 'marked', but the actual execution of it. Ugh. Brutal beyond expectation.

I, too, wonder where Martin is going to take the main story-thrust from, now that the Starks are "gone". Kalesi vs the Lannisters? Wildlings vs everyone? Some 'haha fooled you, he isn't really dead!' rabbit?

Edit: Also, anyone wonder if Martin read Herbert? Promotion and subsequent relocation far from safe family home leading to near execution of same. Makes me wonder what else he stole...hmmmmm....

I haven't read past book 3, but I think it's pretty clear that Jon Snow and Dany will marry and ride dragons into the "last battle" with the Necromancer from the north who is animating all those corpses.

As long as it goes out with a bang and not some sort of 'artistically' ambiguous ending ala the Sopranos. I say some sort of FFA between those cold beasties, the dragon lady, baratheons, lannisters and whatever's left of the Starks. Blow the entire budget of hbo for a decade.   Which at this pace will happen in about 5 years, if then.

But Snow is so bland and actively dislike Dany.

I think I want Sansa to snap at the loss of her family and become an iron fisted ruler. Sort of Galadriel meets Stalin.

The producer, Frank Doelger, said in an interview in Rolling Stone (http://www.rollingstone.com/movies/news/game-of-thrones-producer-discusses-series-end-20130517) that they hope to end with season 7.

Quote
"[The number of series] is being discussed as we speak. The third season was the first half of book three, season four will be the second part of book three. . . George R.R. Martin has written books four and five; six and seven are pending," Doelger told Radio Times at the BAFTA Awards last weekend. "I would hope that, if we all survive and if the audience stays with us, we'll probably get through to seven seasons."

My problem with Jon Snow and Daenerys is that they're both being played by pretty bad actors. Emilia Clarke has an easier time of it because her character is awesome, and I think Kit Harington has improved a bit since the start, but if it does end up being all about them then they're going to need to get a bit more life about them IMO.

Watched it with my brother last night, he's only halfway through book one so it was a surprise for him, even though he had heard at work that a bunch of people died.  I told him after it was over that I would have cared more if anyone I actually liked had been killed.  He mostly agreed, but that it was still f'd up.  I told him he best hang on to his hat, because people would be dropping like flies in the next 4 books.

Fat men who walk with canes by 64 do not live long.  He won't see the end of the series and he's publicly stated he's left instructions for his wife to burn his notes because he doesn't want a Jordan pulled on him.  (Truth of that or if she will is debatable.)

The books are written in such a way that if you reread them after knowing what happens you can't help but think "how the fuck did i not see this coming, it's foreshadowed like a million times".  But the first time you are always shocked.

The books had enough foreshadowing that I knew shit was going down at the wedding.  The only suspense for me was the hope that Robb and/or the North in general would make it out alive.  Nope!

If I had only watched the TV series without seeing everyone go apeshit about the episode beforehand, I don't see how I could have seen all that coming until the guy walks over and ominously closes the door.

In retrospect, I think it's pretty obvious that A) Robb and Catelyn had systematically alienated almost all of their allies by doing stupid shit and B) Frey is a cunt of the highest order and not to be trusted.  But as has been said, the genius is that while you COULD have seen it coming, you most likely didn't, because you want to think the story is going to be about Robb avenging Ned and beating the bad guy.  Nope!

Three.  Four, from a certain PoV.  I think the fact that it starts with the chick getting stabbed right in the baby bump is a big part of the shock value of the scene.  They aren't just revenging a slight and a broken oath, they're quite deliberately wiping out House Stark (as far as they know, Sansa is the only survivor).

Thought about spoilering that, but if you haven't watched it by now, there's no way you're uncontaminated.

No precedent or foreshadowing for that whatsoever. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMTzc7g71MU)   :awesome_for_real:

But yeah, even though it makes perfect sense in the narrative, you don't expect the writer to do something like that -- you expect some sort of convenient plot device to save the heroes.  IMO Martin gets a bad rap for going out of his way to kill his characters -- I think it's more accurate that he doesn't go out of his way to keep them alive.

He has been going out of his way to make anybody remotely on the side of good fail horribly, however, which is annoying because I've been able to predict how every god damned event will play out since Storm.  He needs to break cliche and let a good guy win for once!  That would be the only truly shocking thing he could pull off at this point.

Not that there are very many left.

Well, I was well aware of all that as we went along.  Just from the show I knew Frey was a dirtbag, and Robb was making a critical mistake by crossing him.  I also recognized Robb, of course, had been basically bumbling to victory anyway and his mistakes caught up with him.  No, I completely agree that Martin doesn't seem to be killing off people so much as he doesn't save them via deus ex machina or something else along that line.  Although there is a bit of both I think.  I'm completely on board with the Starks losing the Game because they ultimately aren't really playing it properly, unlike most everyone else.

I'm now fearing for Varys since he's done his revenge bit and is starting to look like a good guy, but maybe he'll not lose his senses.

Evil always wins, because good is dumb.

If this is getting so predictable. Non-readers, name 3 people who will die next year.

On a question someone asked above, the books have even more foreshadowing, but it is more subtle, either because it is presented as a more cryptic prophecy or vision, or because it is mixed in with so much extra material it can often slide right by without you noticing until you come to thing being foreshadowed.

What Martin does do wonderfully is create the illusion of that deus ex machina about to happen and make you buy it completely before yanking the rug from underneath you.  Ned is gonna join the nightswatch and be reunited with Jon! nope, fuck you.  Drogo is gonna get brought back by blood magic! nope, fuck you.  Theon is gonna surrender and join the nightstwatch and tell Jon all about Bran and Rickon! nope, fuck you.  Robb's plan is actually quite good he will surely turn things around! nope, fuck you.  Catelyn has a hostage now, surely she will... nope. Cause fuck you.  Yes, retroactively you can say all the deaths were coming, but you are lying if you say there wasn't always a good chance things were going to turn out well.

Robb was fucked when he

A. killed karkstark
B. Accepted an invitation to lord freys castle....

I mean no way any good can happen there.

Drogo...err no...I mean anyone who thought dany's decision making wills save him was kidding him/herself

Theon no one liked him so his betrayal was hindsight 20/20 at that point.

Only Ned came as a surprise, considering how seneless and baseless his murder was.
