Can you ping 67.40.227.231? Title: Re: odd internet issue Post by: brellium on November 27, 2012, 08:53:17 PM What does it look like if you traceroute just to 67.40.227.231? pinging the gateway is fine, 30ms ping, the traceroute to it is the same 30/31ms no drop, doing a traceroute to the hop just beyond that results in the initial drop, not an issue with the network, same results behind the switch or without result same on netbook which I have right next to it, both when connected to the wan (on two different cables from the used on this machine) and also connected wirelessly. Same results on different onboard lan and third machine. Both routers are throwing out ATM encapsulation errors (same model). Can you ping 67.40.227.231? Title: Re: odd internet issue Post by: brellium on November 27, 2012, 08:59:15 PM I did also see two separate 300+ ms pings to each of the routers on a first ping one on this machine and once on the netbook when connected to the WAN. However that's probably out of 100+ trace routes on both machines. That drop is a bit more frequent.

Would work fine internally but try and leave and suddenly it got slow. Even better was when it started only doing it on one or two ports and not all of them.

Yeah, it's very strange because it's doing it on both of them.Title: Re: odd internet issue Post by: Chimpy on November 28, 2012, 04:54:32 AM Are they 2-wire routers? Those things do all kinds of ridiculous shit after a while and then usually take a dirt nap.

YESTitle: Re: odd internet issue Post by: Hammond on November 28, 2012, 09:12:02 AM Yea if its a 2-wire router see if you can get a new one. If not see if there is a firmware update. When I was doing ISP support I saw a higher failure rate with the 2-wire modems than any other modems qwest sold / supported.
On a side note a gap in the responses with a traceroute is not always a indication of issues. Sometimes that just means the equipment drops that request and does not respond and that is by design. (I don't think you want to know the technical details of that...). Title: Re: odd internet issue Post by: Lantyssa on November 28, 2012, 01:00:29 PM Do you get different results when using the name (DNS) versus IP? It could be a delay in establishing a connection with your DNS.
Title: Re: odd internet issue Post by: brellium on November 28, 2012, 03:32:09 PM Do you get different results when using the name (DNS) versus IP? It could be a delay in establishing a connection with your DNS. Nope, same results with IP and DNS, if I step up the IP each jump I end up with the odd loss, packets sent after that are clean, until I ping the next jump and then the losses or high ping the router on the first ping, regardless the new one seems to be behaving.Title: Re: odd internet issue Post by: Trippy on November 28, 2012, 03:56:58 PM What happens if you traceroute to f13.net?
Title: Re: odd internet issue Post by: Chimpy on November 28, 2012, 03:59:24 PM As hammond said, missing a hop in a trace is not necessarily bad. What you are really looking for is large jumps in latency between individual hops.
And 2wire devices are all pretty much garbage. Title: Re: odd internet issue Post by: brellium on November 29, 2012, 05:25:51 AM What happens if you traceroute to f13.net? What are you seeing wrong that they had you do this troubleshooting? You only mentioned some latency which can be caused by a 2wire modem failing. Which if you talked to qwest (who are actually now centrylink) I am suprised they didn't just replace unless you bought it and its not under warranty anymore. They did, this one seems to be working fine, other than this weird issue, old one was doing the same thing just recycling frequently. What are you seeing wrong that they had you do this troubleshooting? There are so many reason this could be happening that unless you are seeing a degradation of services you are just going to be chasing your tail trying to nail down what is causing it. To bad they gave you another 2-wire and not one of the ZyXEL or Actiontec modems. I have had much better luck with them over the years.

Its a totally different company from Zyxel. The 2wire modems I was talking about are the two on this page. http://qwest.centurylink.com/internethelp/modem-2wire.html |
