Title: I got a book deal!
Post by: voodoolily on December 01, 2011, 09:46:42 AM
Part of the reason I've been AWOL lately (besides the sprog) is that I've been busy writing. Some of you already know, but I got a contract to write Breakfast: A History for Rowman and Littlefield's AltaMira Press! My MS is due a year from today, and I have to spit out 75K words on a subject that requires a lot of research, so I'm busybusybusy. Unfortunately, this an academic press so the colorful language will be at a minimum; regardless, I hope when it's published that some of you will read it!

xoxo
VDL

Maybe next you can do a lowbrow version with your colorful and spontaneous language.

Thanks! This actually isn't the book that I really wanted to write, but I figured it's a foot in the door and is cheaper than grad school. I'll get a tiny advance (seriously, I make more money blogging) and royalties!  :awesome_for_real:

Congrats!

So what was the book you really wanted to write? Because I think writing about breakfast is awesome! Everyone loves breakfast.
You said in your OP that your MS is due in a year. What is a "MS"?

Congrats, VDL!

Yes, it's fancy author-abbrevs for manuscript. The rest of the shorthand is totally over my head.  :oh_i_see:

Is the book going to be used in any courses? Otherwise why would they restrict your style?

Also good luck, not just with writing it but everything else involved. Will be interesting to see if you want to write another book once you're done. ;)

If it helps you any, today I had a protein shake for breakfast, followed up by some really tasty rolls with some rather strong cheese on them.  You can use this material for chapter 5 in your book, assuming that you credit me properly.

Fuckin' A. A history of breakfast? That's epic. Grats!

I had a blueberry turnover today. Yesterday, raisin bran cereal. Hope that helps.

I totally thought VDL was writing about the history of Belfast up to that post and was wondering how the thread could derail so quickly... Yay Thursday Beer!

Oh and congrats :)

That kind of reminds me, I had a peppermint hot chocolate yesterday from McDonald's.  It was delicious.

Not only that, but I talk about the history of nitrates!

Bacon narwhal is kind of terrifying...ly delicious.

Whale blubber might not be all that far off.

Grats on the book deal!  I may check it out just for some new/old ideas.  Wheat allergy plus cholesterol intake restrictions have just about led me to giving up on breakfasts, at least American style. Oatmeal got old years ago.

Contracted word count rather than pages, eh.  Too bad, you could fill a lot of pages easy with yummy pictures!

...except that it's a history book, not a cookbook. I've gotta crank out around 300 pages.

Sounds to me like a few recipes would be good filler... I'd love to see some comparative recipes..

Old cookbooks are full of history. I have an old cooking "encyclopedia" that has several pages devoted to lard. We definately had different thoughts about what constituted a healthy meal in the sixties.

I have one that details all the favorite meals across the world from the view of Vincent Price in the 70s.

Found my cookbook online: Culinary Arts Institute Encyclopedic Cookbook

This lady has a full rundown of it on her blog, and it captures its absurdity quite well: http://www.allthelivelongday.com/2011/10/culinary-arts-institute-encyclopedic.html (http://www.allthelivelongday.com/2011/10/culinary-arts-institute-encyclopedic.html)
Took it when I moved out of my parents, mainly just for a scone recipe in it. Held on to it for nostalgia sake.

If you ever wanna see my drop cash like a gambling addict, take me to the vintage cookbook section of Powell's. It's insane. Last time I went I came away with three books: a housewife's menu planner from 1928, a food history book written in the late 1800s and Aspic and Old Lace - a collection of one hundred years' worth of ladies auxiliary recipes from the Midwest.

I just rely on my Concise Encyclopaedia of Gastronomy. It has recipes for everything from wine and tarts, to the proper way to cook a badger, to the properties of zebra meat (Yellow and somewhat stringy, generally disliked by Europeans)

I do eat a shitton of bacon though, therefore, by the transitive properties of the One True Food, I offer congrats and bid to buy your book in multiple quantities when it drops.

I try to catch vintage books when they get donated to the library but we don't add them (we're not an academic library). Since we started selling things on amazon, that's dried up completely  :sad_panda:
