Title: So uh... Post by: Surlyboi on November 05, 2011, 06:30:09 PM I got married a few hours ago.
Just wanted to share. Title: Re: So uh... Post by: Bzalthek on November 05, 2011, 06:32:58 PM You have my condolences...
Seriously though, congratulations! Did your state legalize it or did you have to travel? ;) Title: Re: So uh... Post by: Abagadro on November 05, 2011, 06:52:03 PM Cool. Congrats.
Title: Re: So uh... Post by: IainC on November 05, 2011, 06:59:46 PM Good luck and congratulations. Going anywhere nice for the honeymoon?

Did your state legalize it or did you have to travel? ;) That's why we bought the place in Palo Alto. :drillf: Although teh gay marriage is legal in NYC now, which would be awesome if I was... gay. No honeymoon 'til Feb/March. We're gonna go to Fiji and Vietnam. Title: Re: So uh... Title: Re: So uh... Post by: NiX on November 05, 2011, 07:33:32 PM Congrats! Was looking at engagement rings with the girlfriend today. I still don't get the point of them, but whatever.
Title: Re: So uh... Post by: Abagadro on November 05, 2011, 07:51:18 PM Was reading an article about that the other day. There was really no such tradition of an engagement ring until the Debeers company in the 30s decided to create it to juice sales. So there is no point.
Title: Re: So uh... Post by: Azazel on November 05, 2011, 08:10:35 PM The point is pretty much that almost 100 years on, women expect it, it's a societal norm, and chicks like jewelry.

There was really no such tradition of an engagement ring until the Debeers company in the 30s decided to create it to juice sales. So there is no point. Link to article. Had an interesting "discussion" with my girlfriend's friend, who has no real world grasp of money because her parents pay for everything, about why engagement rings and 20-50k weddings are ridiculous and stupid. At some point an analogy was made that used saving for your child's education to illustrate how a wedding is an investment. :uhrr: Title: Re: So uh... I was, til I realized I was pushing 40 and that while dating broken women was loads of fun for about three to six months at a time, it was no way to go through life. Also, the missus rocked my world. Title: Re: So uh... Post by: RhyssaFireheart on November 07, 2011, 06:27:02 AM Congrats and good call on the no kids thing!
Also, engagement rings may be expected now, but not every female likes diamonds (I don't) and not every female is enamored with jewelry either. Best thing to do is ask her what she wants and talk about it. Some friends of my husband used to tease him about not spending a bunch of money on an engagement ring for me, but he just shut them down by explaining that the engagement ring I do have means far more than some random white rock because it was my grandmother's and my father was so pleased I asked to use it for my engagement ring. Sadly, I don't wear the ring now because it's over 80 years old now and the metal is getting a bit fragile (prongs are thin and loose). Title: Re: So uh... But I won't keep shitting up the thread with the discussion. Title: Re: So uh... Post by: Lantyssa on November 07, 2011, 05:30:47 PM I would want nothing more than a silver band. Maybe a nice Celtic design or something similar since I like an antiqued look. Possibly a few small colored stones, but not diamonds for sure.
Though if I cared to have a ring, I also might have looked a little harder for someone to get me one... :-P Title: Re: So uh... Post by: Ingmar on November 07, 2011, 05:51:47 PM I did a sapphire instead of a diamond, it went over well.

The adult diaper wearing years of not remembering who I or anyone else is! Title: Re: So uh... Post by: Merusk on November 10, 2011, 10:41:17 AM That's why the "independent of other factors" is so important.
If you drink, smoke or are overweight you take those into account AFTER removal of the height factor. So if max LS is 100, you're 6'8" and it's 3 years per inch your expectancy is ~76 before anything else. Max expectancy isn't really 100 for us, it's only in the 80s.. meaning you giants will be dead long before you're anywhere near retirement, much less a diaper. enjoy! Title: Re: So uh... Post by: Bunk on November 10, 2011, 11:34:01 AM Congrats sir. Those are some really nice shots. I laugh at you from 6'8. Can you hear me from down there? Oh, and 5'8 is not exactly short people. National average for men last time I looked was 5'9. Not that my 5'8 and a half self has any sort of complex about it. I have a 6'4 friend. I laugh every time I go down a staircase or through a doorway that would take the top of his head off. I can't imagine you would even be able to get in to my car at that height. Title: Re: So uh... Post by: Bunk on November 10, 2011, 11:36:10 AM 5'8"? SO CUTE. One of my sisters, who is the same height as me (5'11") married a dude who claims 5'7" (Ingmar suspects he is a mere 5'6"). I loved when people would ask her if she was wearing flats for the wedding. She was always like "Of course! I wouldn't want people to figure out I'M WAY TALLER THAN HIM." I'm 5'11" and all of my sister-in-laws male friends claim to be 5'11", which would be fine but I'm easily 3-4 inches taller than most of them. So I just claim that I'm 6'2" and make myself feel better. :awesome_for_real: Yea, had a friend who was at least an inch shorter than me, but would freak out if you suggested he was under 5'10, cause that's what they told him he was in football. Like football coaches lie... Title: Re: So uh... Post by: Bzalthek on November 10, 2011, 11:37:53 AM Yeah, I think that 3-4 years per inch over 6' is a bit off. Last I checked I knew the average height in say the NBA is around 6'7" while the life expectancy is about 81 or so.
I do see a lot of sites promoting the short is healthier aspect, and while being tall does provide added stress and potential for complications, there seems to be a lot of compensation/consolation wishes to bolster them for being dwarves. Cars can be troublesome. I can usually squish into anything and still be relatively comfortable (I used to drive a plymouth horizon) but sometimes I show off like if the car has a sun roof that opens all the way, I stretch out a bit and my entire head rises above the roof. Title: Re: So uh... Post by: WayAbvPar on November 10, 2011, 11:47:36 AM Yeah, I think that 3-4 years per inch over 6' is a bit off. Last I checked I knew the average height in say the NBA is around 6'7" while the life expectancy is about 81 or so. Being athletic and also able to afford the best health care probably helps that average quite a bit. Title: Re: So uh... Post by: Bzalthek on November 10, 2011, 11:58:49 AM True, but the average NBA career is also about 4-5 years, while 60% of them are reported to being broke after 5 years.
Title: Re: So uh... Post by: Merusk on November 10, 2011, 12:04:56 PM Yeah 3-4 was probably someone overcompensating. However, read the article I linked. They tacked baseball players and for a 12" difference there was a >12 year difference in life expectancy.
This also seems to account for why traditionally 'short' people (they mention SE Asians) have longer life spans. Title: Re: So uh... Post by: Bzalthek on November 10, 2011, 01:35:40 PM By about 4 years they said, yeah. I read most of it. I don't disagree either.

Post by: Trippy on November 14, 2011, 06:39:03 PM How often are you wearing heels when that happens?
Title: Re: So uh... Post by: Lantyssa on November 14, 2011, 07:41:49 PM Sjofn doesn't strike me as someone who wears heels often. I don't get it all the time, but I have had to cut some shorter co-workers down to size.
Title: Re: So uh... Post by: Sjofn on November 15, 2011, 03:20:12 PM I almost never wear heels, no, because I hate walking in them. The times I am thinking of, I was definitely in sneakers. :oh_i_see:
