Congrats! Was looking at engagement rings with the girlfriend today. I still don't get the point of them, but whatever.

Was reading an article about that the other day. There was really no such tradition of an engagement ring until the Debeers company in the 30s decided to create it to juice sales.  So there is no point.

The point is pretty much that almost 100 years on, women expect it, it's a societal norm, and chicks like jewelry.

Had an interesting "discussion" with my girlfriend's friend, who has no real world grasp of money because her parents pay for everything, about why engagement rings and 20-50k weddings are ridiculous and stupid. At some point an analogy was made that used saving for your child's education to illustrate how a wedding is an investment. :uhrr:

I was, til I realized I was pushing 40 and that while dating broken women was loads of fun for about three to six months at a time, it was no way to go through life. Also, the missus rocked my world.

Also, engagement rings may be expected now, but not every female likes diamonds (I don't) and not every female is enamored with jewelry either.  Best thing to do is ask her what she wants and talk about it.  Some friends of my husband used to tease him about not spending a bunch of money on an engagement ring for me, but he just shut them down by explaining that the engagement ring I do have means far more than some random white rock because it was my grandmother's and my father was so pleased I asked to use it for my engagement ring.  Sadly, I don't wear the ring now because it's over 80 years old now and the metal is getting a bit fragile (prongs are thin and loose).

I would want nothing more than a silver band.  Maybe a nice Celtic design or something similar since I like an antiqued look.  Possibly a few small colored stones, but not diamonds for sure.

Though if I cared to have a ring, I also might have looked a little harder for someone to get me one... :-P

That's why the "independent of other factors" is so important. 

If you drink, smoke or are overweight you take those into account AFTER removal of the height factor.   So if max LS is 100, you're 6'8" and it's 3 years per inch your expectancy is ~76 before anything else.   Max expectancy isn't really 100 for us, it's only in the 80s.. meaning you giants will be dead long before you're anywhere near retirement, much less a diaper.

I have a 6'4 friend. I laugh every time I go down a staircase or through a doorway that would take the top of his head off. I can't imagine you would even be able to get in to my car at that height.

Yeah, I think that 3-4 years per inch over 6' is a bit off.  Last I checked I knew the average height in say the NBA is around 6'7" while the life expectancy is about 81 or so.

I do see a lot of sites promoting the short is healthier aspect, and while being tall does provide added stress and potential for complications, there seems to be a lot of compensation/consolation wishes to bolster them for being dwarves.

Cars can be troublesome.  I can usually squish into anything and still be relatively comfortable (I used to drive a plymouth horizon) but sometimes I show off like if the car has a sun roof that opens all the way, I stretch out a bit and my entire head rises above the roof. 

Being athletic and also able to afford the best health care probably helps that average quite a bit.

Yeah 3-4 was probably someone overcompensating.  However, read the article I linked.  They tacked baseball players and for a 12" difference there was a >12 year difference in life expectancy.
