Title: Favorite Quests Post by: jpark on January 21, 2005, 10:47:16 AM I am very new to WoW but I just absolutely howled at this one quest in the Troll starting area which is shared with Orcs:
The foreman gives you a bat. You run around the zone looking for Peons (wood choppers from Warcrafter II and III) sleeping. You can poke them and you get the classic responses like "I am not that kind of orc!" or "Me busy!". If you hit them with the bat... they wake up and go over and start harvesting lumber. You have to wake-up and put back to work 5 sleeping peons. The quest is dead simple, but in 27 levels of EQ I just don't remember anything that much fun. I wish WoW had more quest variety - but the quest variety it does have is welcome. Title: Favorite Quests Post by: AcidCat on January 21, 2005, 10:50:45 AM Yeah, that was a funny one. There is a lot of humor to be found in the game.
Title: Favorite Quests Post by: kaid on January 21, 2005, 11:55:56 AM There are some amusing ones one quest for a gnome alchemist to who is searching for a cure for the disease in gnomeragan actually winds up turning the diseased gnome into a chicken. hehe I was amused when I saw that one.
The level 20 rogue quest to learn poison is pretty darn neat big sneaking puzzle. kaid Title: Favorite Quests Post by: Ardent on January 21, 2005, 12:35:52 PM The druid quest to get bear form was satisfying in a "druidy" way. The Moonglow area is pretty cool.
Tauren and night elves, living together ... mass hysteria! Title: Favorite Quests Post by: Toast on January 21, 2005, 02:21:44 PM The rogue quest to get poisons was great. The quest was to steal an item from a powerful wizard in his tower.
The quest text gave advice to read a scroll in inventory for tips on accomplishing the mission. The scroll mentioned using the Garrote ability to deal with roaming guards. When I garroted the guards, they instantly died. Very cool. After sneaking and garroting to the top of the tower, the rogue is faced with the wizard, who is at an unkillable level. I stealthed up to him, sapped him to "mez" for 25 seconds, and quickly began using lockpicking to get into his locked chest. Just as I got the quest item, he woke up. i had to hightail it out with him and half of his guards chasing. This was a great quest because it had great class-specific flavor. This was great hand-crafted content. Title: Favorite Quests Post by: Signe on January 21, 2005, 03:38:02 PM Since playing a new alt on Icecrown, my favourite quest is the one I actually finished. :(

Title: Favorite Quests Post by: Jobu on January 21, 2005, 04:19:35 PM There's an early quests in Teldrassil where you get tricked by a Satyr to go rape nature or something. The elder elves find out you got tricked, and rebuke you and all.
Then they send you off to trick the Satyr back and turn him into a toad or something. I got a kick out of it, because everytime you walk by him after that quest the game renders him as a toad instead of his normal tricksy self. Title: Favorite Quests Post by: Signe on January 21, 2005, 05:30:19 PM I decided to play my alliance alt on Icecrown because some people from my old SWG guild play there. (Darniaq, Kobi, etc.) All the fun I had in SWG I can attribute to that guild.
You're right, HRose... last night I dc'd 4 times in 15:00. After the last one, it was announced that it the server would restart in 15 minutes. It made it to 12:00. Evidently, the new trend is that particular areas crash... not necessarily the whole server. Unfortunately, I'm such low level still that I'm restricted to one area... the one that likes to crash. I really hope Riggs is right about it becoming more stable. Luckily, Earthen Ring doesn't seem to suffer from all this nonsense. Title: Favorite Quests Post by: HRose on January 21, 2005, 08:46:38 PM Yeah, I know because Darniaq opened a number of posts on the official boards when the server crashed and he is usually not happy about it on Grimwell :)

We just finished all of the mechanical chicken escorts which resulted in a mechanical chicken of my own. We've just recently escorted a lost turtle to find his mate. Usually some asshat Alliance fuckstick there to kill off your allies and make you fail the quest, but the quest giver regens quickly and you can try again. When you're walking around in Duskwood, a zone with really great atmosphere, a fortune teller asks you to look into this guy called Stalvan who's been bothering her senses. You slowly develop leads and piece together who this guy was from old journal entries. Whenever you pick up an entry, you're attacked by Banshees who are trying to ensure that the mystery and torment of Stalvan be kept forever at rest. You eventually discover that Stalvan was the victim of a love affair, which drove him mad. The story is cloudy, but eventually leads up to the present with Stalvan reported to be an angry and tortured undead soul living in a ruined house, deep in Duskwood forest. You're ordered to destroy him, as he supposedly lived a life of depravity and killed many innocents; you're not sure exactly what he did. Anyways, I was sympathetic to Stalvan. It was the first time that I killed any MMO creature with a touch of remorse. Title: Favorite Quests Post by: Signe on January 24, 2005, 08:15:56 PM Are we going to have another poll? Of course, when I first explored Duskwood, he caused me a few difficulties and I do hold a grudge. So his demise was doubly satisfying. Triply, if you consider this was my first real use of retaliation. Splattering his dual-weilding, depraved, undead fundament all over his cottage was a high point in my career. Title: Favorite Quests Post by: murdoc on January 25, 2005, 08:32:46 AM Everytime someone finishes up the Hermit quest that unleashes Stitches, the (imo) seriously under-conned lvl 35 Elite Abomination upon Duskwood I lol irl.
It's pretty fun to get the yell from the Night Watch that Stitches is out and then the howls from everyone as he massacres them all on the road from Raven Hill to Darkshire. Too bad the quest has the dumbest NPC names (Ambercrombie and Stitches... ugh) I'm doing the quest out of Stormwind about the missing messenger and I'm actually really liking it so far. Fair bit of travel, but the story behind it is interesting so far. Title: Favorite Quests Post by: Righ on January 25, 2005, 11:34:15 AM Indeed, talk about seriously under-conned. Stitches was very tough to defeat at level 45. I was just walking through the zone filling in unexplored areas of the map, when I noticed him, named, not elite and levels above anything else in the region. Since everybody seemed to be avoiding him and he was 10 levels below me, I decided to kill him by myself. Ouch. More like an elite of my level or even slightly over, and he very nearly killed me. I had to use a bunch of kiting, confusion, first-aid and potions to beat him. He dropped some grey bone that, held in the off-hand, adds 50ac. It was odd to have dozens of lowbie Alliance /cheering an orc.

Actually, there is a LOT of scripted shit in the various cities and towns that people seem to completely miss out on. Just wander about and listen for a grey text conversation, then stand around for 5 or 6 minutes and get the whole thing: In undercity, there is a group of people discussing some guys human mind slave. If you stand around the cages with the people in them in the Apocathary disctict, the Apocathary guy standing near one feeds various liquids to one of captives ending in a rather hilarous display (ever repeatedly clicked a sheep?) I have spotted other scripted conversations in Stormwind (little kids on a dock fishing have one) In Freewind Post (horde only for 1k needles) there is a tauren aspiring to be a windrider master. There's a nice sequence of goblin quests out of ratchet for some piece of technical whizzery. It involves raiding processing plants and a venture company oil rig. Then you finally bring the item to a goblin technician who procedes to beat the hell out of it with a spanner, shortly before declaring that it doesn't seem to be working right anymore. There's also one where you need some corrupted water cleansed and the shaman NPC talks about "needing the help of the spirits". Pretty typical guff until she walks over to the water and calls forth a massive L60 elite elemental to actually do the work. Does a marvellous job of adding weight and power to the event. There really are a lot of very nice touches in WoW. Title: Favorite Quests Post by: toma levine on February 01, 2005, 07:00:09 PM Ahh, the Samophlange quest. Title: Re: Favorite Quests Post by: jpark on March 20, 2005, 03:53:35 PM This is a "necro post" of sorts but now that I am playing this game more I wanted to add some comments.
Kill the Lion. In the barrens I had a simple quest taking all of 10 minutes to kill a feared lion. Sounds like your typical Get X quest, but instead I was given a horn. When I neared the lair I had to blow on the horn to summon the lion. This created a lot of excitement, since I had no idea of the encounter distance or if this was going to be a group or solo encounter. A nice touch on a quest that is so short (I cannot remember the actual quest name). NPC battle. This was really cool. In the Barrens I saw a group Centaurs attacking an Orc outpost. At first I thought it was some sort of PvP attack - but it was all NPCs. I entered the fray and was able to heal Orc fighters. I also killed a higher level centaur and got experience for it, even though by the time I attacked he was almost dead. An orc peon even emerged trying to chop wood to bring it back to the fort. This dynamic made me feel apart of this world. Plant the seeds. I had to explore an oasis and find a fissure. The fissure was located in the water and I planted the seeds there. That was a nice twist again on a 15 minute quest. It was cool seeing that I could flee to the water and hyenas wound not enter the water. However, turtles in the water could pursue me on land. The biology made sense (in EQ2 I have been killed by a school of fish on land in fleeing the water). It was cool to see that the drops in the water could be right clicked upon - revealing further "drops" contained within the shells. Purify the well. Another 10 minute quest in Thunderbluff. Clear a few denizens around the well and perform a ritual to purify it. Simple quest, nice little twist. Kill the Raptors. A simple kill X quests with some nice twists. After killing the raptors and collecting some feathers from them I had to locate 3 different nests and place a feather on each one as my "calling card" to make sure they got the message. Quick quest, nice twist. The above illustrates some simple variations on quests that take about 15 minutes to perform. Now THAT is detail. That's was one of the reasons I like the dwarves. If you look at them in their starting area in the snow - you see their breath. Neat. Also, I have noticed some emotes seem race specific. /sleep gives the fetal position if you're Tauren but if you're Undead you assume this rigid "Pharaonic" posture. /salute again appears to differ in between races. Title: Re: Favorite Quests Post by: Rodent on March 22, 2005, 06:17:17 AM Stalvan's quest was a good one. But I had NO sympathy for that thing. He deserved what he got. Damn right, everytime his curse lifted I would complete another part of the quest and be cursed again, I wish I would've had the foresight to bring along a mage. The Darkshire quests are some of the most fun allience quests around though, but perhaps I only feel that way because I play a paladin. My own personal favorite is every quest that doesn't involve Gnomeregan. I loathe gnomes. Nah, the quests there are pretty kickass nomatter what class you are. The ONLY thing bad about the zone is how far Raven Hill is from both the (player) graveyard and Darkshire. Infact, I hear it's faster to griff to Sentinal Hill in westfall and go from there than to run from Darkshire, and I don't doubt it. The zone is great for questing, great for grinding, and very atmospheric. Easily the best sub-30 zone. Title: Re: Favorite Quests Post by: Train Wreck on March 22, 2005, 08:32:14 AM Darkshore is a very large zone. The map doesn't do it justice because it doesn't convey scale. The Barrens is another such zone.
Title: Re: Favorite Quests Post by: Calantus on March 22, 2005, 08:44:10 AM The difference being that the quests for those zones are spread out. The ones for darkshire send you to raven hill and back far too often for it to be so far away. It's not so much that it's big, but that it's polar.
Title: Re: Favorite Quests Post by: Rodent on March 22, 2005, 10:08:12 AM But that's great for us miners, I picked up alot of iron and tin ore on my way between Darkshire and Raven Hill... Though I did Griph over to Westfall when I had to drop something off in Svens camp.

That's what makes it a pain in the ass, but it's still larger than most, at least along the y axis. Title: Re: Favorite Quests Post by: Xilren's Twin on March 23, 2005, 09:11:36 AM Just got 2 which are different, which is nice. The kodo taming herding quest in Desolace and the pirate treasure one.
The first gives you an item to find dying and aging kodos and transform them into young tame kodo, you then take back to the goblin who wants them. No fighting at all unless you run through a wandering mob. Was trying to think of any quest similar in an mmorpg to date and coudn't come up with one. The second one is a pirate quest for buried treasure. Yar! What's not to like. Title: Re: Favorite Quests Post by: Calantus on March 23, 2005, 05:53:16 PM Yeah, as soon as I saw kodo roundup mentioned I was like "Oh no you DIDN'T". It's fortunate I go running to thottbot whenever I get stuck or God knows how long I would have tried that quest. Also managed to warn 4 people off it over my time spent in desolace. About time they fixed it.

About time they fixed it. I'm just lucky I guess :) Its actually a pretty easy quest for a choice of two decents rewards (sadly, neither of which i could use). Tried doing the "collect 10 kodo bones" while i was in the area; since they were just lying all over the place in and the kodo are non aggressive, i knew it had to be red to me for a reason... Flashback to Kotor2; disturbing the bones spawns a lvl 38 kodo spirit. Killed one at 33 by the skin of my teeth. Then tried the rogue method; pickup bone, hit vanish. :) It works but the 5 min cooldown makes it something to do in spurts. I need to get back there and finish that quest. Xilren |
