Title: E3 Live From the Show Floor and Taking Requests
Post by: Margalis on June 14, 2010, 10:49:22 PM
So assuming I can find my E3 badge and that LA isn't destroyed by an earthquake in the next 24 hours I should be at E3 tomorrow. Anyone want me to look at anything in particular?

Last year I wrote up some impressions of what I saw on the show floor and looking back I think I pretty much nailed it, everything I said looked good ended up being good, everything I was iffy on ended up being not so hot. So you can trust me far more than any professional website!

Of course I'll check out whatever MMOs are there at least a little. Other than that I'm planning on spending most of my time playing sequels to shooters and Nintendo-game knockoffs, since that's apparently all the video game industry makes.  :oh_i_see:

I am interested in Portal 2 and the new Rock Band thing with a million buttons.

Highlight of E3!

I don't think Portal 2 is going to be on the show floor, seeing that the event for it was cancelled. If the new Rock Band is there I will definitely check it out given that I can play bass and a little piano...although last I heard there was no pro-mode bass guitar, just normal guitar.

I think our taste in games differs too much for me to have any specific recommendations though.

Maybe if there's anything special being shown off at E3 for FFXIV though?

Posting here because it doesn't deserve it's own thread. So apparently Kinect is some sort of device you use when you want to carefully mimic the motions of a video game character.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_y1-xAXv4g&feature=player_embedded

That is one hell of a fail demo. They could have at least had the guy rehearse until it wasn't so blatantly obvious that the character was moving first.

Oh, and on the subject of E3, the first day of press conferences is over and schild hasn't even posted since the 12th let alone made any E3 threads.  It feels like someone canceled Christmas.   :heartbreak:

They just showed the MS360 demo on tv including that SW game demo. That guy wasn't part of it. That video is probably fake.

That was the pre-E3 (like a day or so prior) 'sneak preview'.
Oh, and Bullet Storm is Game of the Show.  :drill:

For those interested in games being shown, here is a list (posted May 5th so some changes surely occurred) (http://games.ign.com/articles/108/1086456p1.html). If anyone has a better one, I'd be interested in seeing that for updates/changes since this one still shows Portal 2 for Valve.

So far, I'm interested in the FF14 info, the Trion Worlds games, Wahammer 40K MMO, whatever Valve has up their sleeve, SW:TOR. I'm kind of interested in Yakuza 4, Monkey Island 2, Crysis 2, Bulletstorm.

Though it definitely feels weird having that many MMOs I'm interested in seeing more from.

I'm most interested in Ubi's Maniaplanet (http://www.gametrailers.com/video/e3-2010-maniaplanet/101448), though it'll invariably be saddled with their crap DRM.   :awesome_for_real:

I'll be on the show floor as well. I'm checking out 8 FPSes, 4 MMOs, and Rock Band 3 as my must-see titles. Go figure.

Maybe you guys on the floor can check out new Marvel vs. Capcom & Civ V? Or maybe the Warhammer 40k MMO. I wouldn't mind some updates on those.

Is Valkyria Chronicles II only going to be available on PSP?

Is Valkyria Chronicles II only going to be available on PSP?

Most likely. The only thing I've seen stating any hope of a console version is from Wikipedia:
Quote
In a blog post on the official website, executive producer Shuntaro Tanaka has revealed that the game will keep the BLiTZ system with wireless ad-hoc to be implemented. In addition, Tanaka said that the game's development for the PSP was done "to allow a broader spectrum of users to discover and enjoy what makes Valkyria special." with the possibility of the game being seen in consoles in the near future

Ask the Civ V people when Fall From Heaven 3 will be released   (to clarify: I'm serious!)

Nobody excited for Mafia 2? The first was pretty wicked.

I'd like to hear a Gothic 4 vs Risen comparison, if anyone has played Risen.

NCsoft doesn't have an E3 booth this year, so no go on that front.

I'll see what I can do about checking out the other stuff. The first Five Hour Energy has been consumed, and I'm one of those bums charging all my electronic devices at the last minute in the hallway.

Warhammer 40k mmo is called WH40k: Dark Millenium Online. A one minute trailer is all we get. No idea what game is like, other then yo there are health bars and you shoot people.

That Nexon game Vindictus is pretty neat. Click to attack. I threw a box at a worm. Might be neat?

I played Medal of Honor muliplayer. It is Modern Warfare 2, as imagined by dice.

Tera Online is actually pretty damn cool. The combat feels quite solid. This is the one I'll talk about most later.

Paul Barnett is currently screaming on the EA stage. Time to run.

He was on stage in EA's booth during the Sims 3 for consoles hypefest.

Nothing terribly exciting in the west hall that there isn't a line for (3DS, Twisted Metal, Killzone 3) - everything I've wanted to check out so far has been line free, or by press appointment only (Brink, Rage, Deus Ex).

The graphical filtery thing for Kane and Lynch 2 looks pretty neat. Pretty standard other than that.

Bunch of fangirls in the Squeenix booth, pretty hilarious.

I got a temporary tattoo at the booth for that luchador game.

It's definitely a smaller show overall, with what was Kentia Hall essentially being shoved into the sides of the two main halls.

That game... I dunno. Nothing jumped out at me, other then the fact that they were demoing on PC and PS3 side by side, in the same PvP match. They were doing Heroes vs. Villains, and oh my goodness. Some of the animations were pretty bad. Someone was playing an archer character with gold wings, and he was standing right on top of a turret shooting at it, and it had to be one of the clunkiest animations I'd seen.

Looks friggin' awful. Right click anchors your mouse, and then you move it around like an analog stick to move the camera. Incredibly slow-paced combat. The only difference I could tell between FFXIV and FFXI were that you had little timer bars to tell when you were going to attack again in FFXIV.

Maybe it was just because most of the other decent MMOs that I saw there were all click-to-attack, and MUCH faster paced, but this felt glacially slow. Lots of text dialog for back and forth talking.

The Agency had a trailer. Hooray. I'm sure it's online somewhere already. It looks like they stole Modern Warfare 2's weapon customization, so that's nice at least.

I didn't see Cryptic anywhere.

SW:TOR was by press appointment only.

Fallout: New Vegas was by press appointment only, as was Brink, Rage and Hunted: The whateverwhatever.

Oh yes, Clone Wars.

They did have this on display, and while I didn't actually bother to stop and play it, I watched over some shoulders for a few minutes.

The lightsaber combat seems to be a simon-says series of arrow key presses that you have to do in a certain window of time, and then the animation plays out. I watched someone do a little starfighter combat, and that seems to be point your mouse to fly around, and click on stuff to shoot it. All quite nice looking - it seems they plugged in some extra features to the FreeRealms engine.

I can't envision Sony allowing Steam on the PS3 as a distribution mechanism, because it'd be in competition with their own online store.  Simply using its multiplayer and community features for some games seems much more likely.

Those were some very sexy videos. Valve games just ooze style and character and they can basically take the gameplay elements from all the "physics puzzle" games and put them in immersive first person.

Extending steam store to the PS3 is fairly pointless since the manufacturer has their own equivalent. However making it so that a steam game can be easily ported to or from the consoles is an interesting tactical move. Valve/Steam gains a lot more form having a uniform and widespread environment as opposed to the console owners whose interests are to wall off their garden. Maybe based on an assumption that as games become more expensive and the consoles more powerful generic cross-platform games will be the way to recoup the money.

If you say so... an Xbox just looks like a low-end PC to me, and there's more than enough Xbox/PS3 games that I'm sure people have worked out models that allow the easiest porting.

That said I was thinking more in terms of using the same API for access to steam services.

I'm not looking forward to The Agency much, but find it amusing that SOE is still listing it as a title to get excited about despite the length of time since it was first announced (and due out) in 2007.

Yeah, but when it comes down to it, that's pretty typically in an MMO timeframe.

I will do a good writeup at some point soon, been busy.

On the show floor The Agency was only in video form. If it never came out I wouldn't be surprised.
