Title: What Should I Watch This Summer?
Post by: Morfiend on May 29, 2009, 12:10:38 PM
I seem to have freed up a decent amount of time this summer, so I am trying to decide what shows to watch this summer. Also, going to try and do some old movie watching of stuff I haven't seen.

A few of the things I haven't seen yet include:

Battlestar Galactica
The Wire
24
Chuck
Star Trek Movies (all of them except 3 and 4).

I really would like to watch BSG, but since it so recently ended, I was doubtful they have the complete thing on DVD.

Does anyone have any other options of stuff I may have missed or that is a must watch?

*edit*

Things off the top of my head I have watched. And am up to date on.

Weeds
Dexter
Entourage
Sopranos
The Shield
True Blood
Fringe
The Office
CSI (the only good one)
Rome
Deadwood
Lost
Heroes

I am sure there are more that I cant think of now.

Fringe, when it comes out on DVD or get in online.

Personally, I'm borrowing a friend's Lost DVDs.  I never got into it, so I'm hoping to catch up before next season.

Watched both. Going to edit my first post.

Season 4 of BSG was released in the US in January. You should be good to go on that one.

As for the ST movies, Khan is the only classic, follow by Undiscovered Country. The rest are meh at best.

I really liked Life, but it was cancelled, but it was a really good run.  If you have not watched Castle, I would recommend giving it a shot.  Nathon is just brilliant.

One worth going back a little for if you missed it - Arrested Development.

Also, a number of us would likely recommend Terminator:SCC

The Wire is a top five all timer, maybe even number one.  It's all on DVD too.  I'd go with that.

When you say old movie watching, how old are you willing to go?

Probably the 80s or so. I'll watch really old stuff from time to time. I have been meaning to watch Dark City, which I managed to miss somehow.

The 80's aren't old movies.  :geezer:

Damn right! Weekend at Bernie's is just as relevant today.  More so once you realize that AIG = Bernie.

Watch Heroes season 1, then stop. You'll be glad you did.

I was hoping more for complete TV shows. I am pretty well up to date on movies, except for the few I listed.

Watch Californication, skip Dexter.  I really wasn't impressed with Dexter at all, the whole thing is logic fail and not very fun.  What about House?  Moreso if you can watch it with someone (the women in my life all seem to dig it YMMV) so that might be worth a try.

I watched the first 2-3 seasons of Twin Peaks last year, that was awesome since I only remembered bits from when I was a tiny child.  Arrested Development is a great call if you missed it somehow.  Good thread.

You mentioned The Wire (http://www.hbo.com/thewire/). I would recommend that above all else. There are five seasons to watch and you'll wish there was more.

Movies I thoroughly recommend if you haven't seen them: City of God (Cidade de Deus) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0317248/), The Lives of Others (Das Leben der Anderen) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0405094/) and In Bruges (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0780536/).

And the most recent series of Doctor Who (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Who_(series_4)) was good fun.

FX has actually been churning out some pretty solid shows:

- Rescue Me.  Extremely flawed NYC firefighters, Dennis Leary playing the larger than life asshole version of himself.  The first three seasons are great.  Season 4 is kind of hit or miss,  though season 5 (running now) has been back on form.
- It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.  Great dark comedy.  Season 4 should be coming out on DVD soon, as the next season should launch late summer I think.
- Damages.  I watched the first season, was great.  Heavily plotted story with twists and betrayals,  and great performances.  Missed the first half of the second season (which just aired) and so I'm stuck waiting on the DVDs.
- Sons of Anarchy.  I watched a few episodes, didn't grab me.  I know there are a few people on the board enjoying this.

House is a good recommendation.  If you never watched the Xfiles, right up to season 4 or 5 is pretty good TV.  The new Dr. Who is a solid series, though it costs an arm and a leg in the US to get the sets.

Just the Wire. After that, its all downhill. Rescue Me is better than Chuck is better than Dexter is better than BSG is better than Californication is better than 24.

edit: missed a than

You put Chuck and 24 on your list lawlz, your opinion is suspect as fuck.  I'll forgive the Burn Notice lovefest but Chuck, ffs people.

*edit*

Honestly though, its not a bad idea to just look at the thread titles in the TV section, then imdb/wiki anything you haven't seen and if it sounds interesting give it a look you should know if something sounds like it'll be up your alley.  Don't open the threads though, spoiler city.

Wildcard suggestion for people who like 24:  Spooks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spooks), a BBC drama series about MI5 (Britain's CIA): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoW6jy4cQ_0

Lots of badass characters, deep cover and double crossing.

No, silly. That's just an order of preference. I really like Chuck. 24 I'd watch the earlier seasons, but basically skip the ones after the 4th.

Mad Men may be one of the best shows to air over the past several years. Season 1 is available on disc & Season 2 arrives at stores in July.

edit: I second Johny Cee for It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The show's even better if you eat Hungry Man meals while watching.

Mad Men

Seconded. People talk about how cool Mad Men is and about the portrayal of sexism and smoking, etc, but it all happens on top of great writing. The "things are not as they seem" plot style is good. And there are scenes like this. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKTNDgCTyVU)

Band of Brothers

This slipped my mind.

I'd rate it over The Wire, though it is a miniseries.  Every time it's on TV, I end up sitting down and watching it.

The Wire is a great show, mostly because it's so atypical (long, slow, deep story telling), but I've never had the desire to rewatch it.  And I crapped out of season 5 because there was a bit too much author insertion preaching.

Mad Men and Breaking Bad are both highly regarded.

If you've never seen Venture Brothers, it's a great entertaining show.  Kind of starts with the premise that it's a satire of '70's action cartoons, but really builds from there.

Generation Kill is a great mini-series.

I just watched the 18 episodes of Freaks & Geeks in existence and it is great.

Thanks for the tops guys.

First, I only put Chuck and 24 on there because they are highly popular shows that I have not seen. Well I watched a little 24. I love Dexter, and Californication watched them all, same with Carnival. I think I will grab the Band of Brothers box set from my friend, I have seen half of it, but thats a good idea. I picked up BSG s1 disk 1 last night and I am going to give that a go.

I also think I am going to grab Mad Men.

As to House, I cant stand that show.

We have the first season in our Netflix queue also. We have cable, just always forget to watch. We can Tivo the second season after we catch up on the first.

I really liked The Riches, but it got cancelled. If you don't mind watching just two seasons of a great show and not getting closure, then I recommend it.

If you want some juicy soap-y kind of sexy teen drama I highly recommend Gossip Girl.  :drillf:

Top Chef Masters starts on June 10. It's in the Tivo queue now.

If you fancy some nature documentaries, the Planet Earth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planet_Earth_(TV_series)) series is outstanding in every way. Try to get the version narrated by David Attenborough for the best result. The sequence of the snow leopards hunting (which took them 4 or so months to get) is just brilliant.

Planet Earth should be called Food Chain. The David Attenborough series The Trials of Life is similar, though not as cinematographically epic.

In the Valley of the Wolves (http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/episodes/in-the-valley-of-the-wolves/introduction/212/) is badass. The side story about the foxes almost had me bleary eyed. Almost!

Freaks & Geeks, as mentioned earlier, is one of my favorites.

The Life series were all good too, I just think Planet Earth is better for hitting a broader range of environments and organisms. Really you cannot go wrong with any of David Attenborough's documentaries though.

I feel like the writing/documentary work in Planet Earth is a little weaker, maybe in part because Sir David wasn't actually directly involved - he's just narrating in this case, whereas on those other series he was actually involved with the actual production. But then, I have a huge man-crush on him so I may not be entirely objective.

I recently obtained all four seasons via...sub-legal means (primarily because I wanted HD versions).  Much of it is contrived, but all in all I think it is a fantastic piece of work.  I've only just started season 4, though, so it may still manage to piss me off.
