Title: The games of Q1 2009
Post by: Velorath on December 22, 2008, 02:12:54 AM
There's a few big titles dropping in the first quarter, as well as some niche titles people here might be interested in (something like Nobunaga's Ambition: Iron Triangle for instance).  By no means a comprehensive listing, and release dates are subject to change.  I'm trying to just list games where the release date has been confirmed though, or at least the release month.

January

Lord of the Rings: Conquest (PS3, 360, PC) (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/43669.html)

Mirrors Edge (PC) (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/42963.html)

AR Tonelico 2 (PS2) (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/43577.html)

Nobunaga's Ambition: Iron Triangle (PS2)

Skate 2 (360, PS3) (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/43152.html)

MLB Front Office Manager (360, PS3, PC)

Februrary

Feb. 10th:

F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin (PC, 360, PS3) (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/42832.html)

Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection (PS3, 360) - Contains over 40 of Sega's Genesis games

Feb. 17th:

Street Fighter IV (PS3, 360) (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/41050.html?type=)

Grand Theft Auto IV: Lost & Damned (360) (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/43631.html)

Feb. 24th:

Dead Rising (Wii) (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/43352.html)

Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope (360) (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/43157.html)

Feb. 27th:

Killzone 2 (PS3) (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/38548.html)

March

March 3rd:

Halo Wars (360) (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/40831.html)

Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. (PC, PS3, 360) (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/44622.html)

Empire: Total War (PC) (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/43830.html)

March 10th:

MadWorld (Wii) (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/43756.html)

March 13th:

Resident Evil 5 (PS3, 360) (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/41165.html)

March 17th:

Warhammer 40k Dawn of War II (PC) (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/43928.html)

March 24th:

Ninja Blade (360) (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/43214.html?type=)

Edit:  Added links to trailers where possible.  Slowly going to add in screenshots (under spoilers for ease of viewing the thread).  Moved Empire: Total War to March.  Also moved Dawn of War II to March as it so far only has a rough date of Q1 set.

Edit 2:  Added in HAWX.  Also Dead Rising was given a Feb. 27 release date.

Edit 3:  Organized by release date.  Some release dates moved around.  Bionic Commando pushed back.  Rogue Warrior MIA.

January
Lord of the Rings: Conquest (PS3, 360, PC) - Maybe on PC. I enjoyed SWBF1 and 2. It really depends on the level of (presumably EA) DRM.
Skate 2 (360, PS3) - I'll probably DL the demo, and get no further, same as I did withthe first one. I'm just not a skateboarding game kinda guy.

Februrary
Empire: Total War (PC) - I'll no doubt buy it when it gets to the discount bin with the expack packed in. Same as I have with all the other Total War games which I've not yet played...  :uhrr:
Ninja Blade (360) - No idea what this is. Sounds potentially interesting though (also potentially crappy, but there ya go).
F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin (PC, 360, PS3) - What I said about LOTR: CQ above. Except, well, I still haven't played the first FEAR.
Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection (PS3, 360) - Contains over 40 of Sega's Genesis games - I could see myself buying this, depending on the specific games and the price point.
Bionic Commando (PS3, 360) - Meh. Will check the demo.
Street Fighter IV (PS3, 360) - Maybe. Will check the demo.
Grand Theft Auto IV: Lost & Damned (360) - Pretty much a given.
Warhammer 40k Dawn of War II (PC) - Will no doubt buy once it gets cheaper, after the 1st Expack is out.

March
Rogue Warrior (PS3, 360, PC) - Richard Marcinko? Could be interesting if so. Must look this one up. - edit- just did. Looks like it has potential. Zombie Studios seems to have a pretty nondescript history, but still... DRM will be a factor.
Resident Evil 5 (PS3, 360) - Should (hopefully) be good.

Ninja Blade looks like a Ninja Gaiden type game, funded by Microsoft and developed by From Software (Armored Core).  Probably not going to be a great game, but you never know.

Rogue Warrior I put on there because it's being published by Bethesda.  Upon closer inspection though, it looks like it's had a troubled development cycle.

Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection is supposed to be $30.00.  It contains (in addition to some unannounced unlockable games):

Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
Alien Storm
Altered Beast
Beyond Oasis
Bonanza Bros.
Columns
Comix Zone
Decap Attack starring Chuck D. Head
Dr. Robotnik's MBM
Dynamite Headdy
Ecco the Dolphin
Ecco II: The Tides of Time
E-SWAT
Fatal Labyrinth
Flicky
Gain Ground
Golden Axe I
Golden Axe II
Golden Axe III
Kid Chameleon
Phantasy Star II
Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom
Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium
Ristar
Shining in the Darkness
Shining Force
Shining Force 2
Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master
Sonic 3D Blast
Sonic and Knuckles
Sonic Spinball
Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Streets of Rage
Streets of Rage 2
Streets of Rage 3
Super Thunder Blade
Vectorman
Vectorman 2

That collection is worth it for Phantasy Star and Shining Force. The rest is just icing.

As for the first quarter, since I'm all about actually completing games these days:
Resident Evil 5
FEAR 2
Street Fighter IV
Ar Tonelico 2
Killzone 2

and if it actually releases on time - Mad World.

Edit: For the record, I've gotten two builds of Ar Tonelico 2 thus far, the first one had loading issues. The second one eliminated all the loading issues. I'm fairly sure this is why it was delayed til 2009. Anyway, I should get a retail build about 2 weeks before it's out. It is, however, better than the first.

After having been converted to horror genre by Dead Space I'm looking forward to RE5 if it turns out good. Also Killzone 2 and Rogue Warrior both look interesting. FEAR 2 possibly, loved FEAR 1 but very much a 1-trick pony. Bonus points for the awesome ending though  :awesome_for_real:

Would be definitely getting WH40K II if there was any chance of me being capable of PC gaming by then.

What is it with this industry? December, January, March and April are all dead to me, but February has Empire:TW, FEAR 2 and The Sims 3 all dropping within a few weeks of each other.

That's what I call a happy new year right there.

Dead Rising for the Wii, Empire: Total War for sure and Mad World are all a lock for me to either purchase or rent. WH40K: DOW 2 is a maybe. I'm not sure my PC will handle it.

Saint's Row 2 comes out for the PC on Jan 5th. Probably the only thing I'll be getting in Q1 09, I guess.

And I'd kill a man for the arcade version of Shinobi.  I don't think the arcade version has ever been ported, or if it has I missed it.

Dead Rising for the Wii

Less zombies & worse controls = Why bother?

Don't worry about him Gulp, liking the Wii is just a byproduct of only having the Wii. Anything he says otherwise is a delusional lie.

Warhammer 40k Dawn of War II (PC)

March

Resident Evil 5 (PS3, 360)

On this list I see 2 maybes depending on price and my OS compatibility (Dawn of War 2 and Nobunaga, and 2 must haves.  (Genesis Collection and RE 5)

I think some stuff is missing.  Dragon Quest 5 is due for the DS, as is a Wizardry styled game for the DS from Atlus.  (Who else?)

I am so glad I am a picky particular bastard when it comes to games.  Lets me buy less!

When I want your opinion about Wii games, I'll take my dick out of your mouth so I can hear it. Otherwise, your opinion on whether or not I want to play a Wii game is about as useful to me as mine is on whether you should play a 360 game.

We get it. You and schild hate the Wii.

You can go look up the sys req for Company of Heroes. It's not likely it will be much different.

On my list are Mirror's Edge, DoW 2...and..uh, looks like that's it.

Oh, Darkfall, with popcorn in hand.

This is not a good solution. Besides, Gametap is a sluggish piece of shit with an unreasonable GUI and spotty client build quality. If I'm gonna use Gametap, I might as well just steal it and play it with filters in an emulator.

In other words, I'd rather buy it from Sega and play it in my 60GB PS3 with a real controller.

I almost agree with you on something.  HOLY SHIT.

But I already have the PS2 Sega collection and depending on price Imma buying it just for the 3 Shining series games, and the rumors of Phantasy Star 1 as an unlockable.

I sort of have a problem when it comes to Phantasy Star.

I guess I feel if I show it enough love Sega will at least give me the Sega Ages remakes of 1 and 2 so I can love them and hug them and kiss them and call them George.
(Please tell me everyone here is old enough to get that.)

Short of that, prior to 1995 or so, our tastes probably line up (other than shitty stuff where you're just wrong, like Dragon Quest). MLB Front Office would excite me if NFL Head Coach weren't such a massive turd.

Sims 3 is worth a look in about 3 years when you can get the bundle with the 18 expansion packs.  Unfortunately that French commercial for it on YouTube with the overweight burglar freaked me out, so I'm staying away.

OK, I'll bite, what, exactly, did I exclude that people with a soul would go for?

FEAR 2 maybe? Is flanking AI really that exciting?

Mirror's Edge? Yeah, art direction is nice and all, but is it really worth getting excited given this is just a console port?

I honestly don't know what else on that list you might be interested in?

ResEvil 5, MadWorld, SF4 - yes please.

Dead Rising is interesting. The Wii port seems to fix some problems with the 360 version (hello retarded save scheme) and introduce lots of new problems. If only there was some way to put the best parts of each into a new game.

Last year you had GTA4 for starters.

GTA4 was a piece of shit (edit: and it came out in Q2 if I'm not mistaken).

Anyway, Capcom tends to be the big Q1 hitter every year for the past few years and with RE5 and Street Fighter IV coming out (arguably their biggest series since Breath of Fire is basically dead and Megaman is rotting in an 8-bit cave somewhere trying to decide what to do with himself in this era), I'd say there's a lot to be excited about. Also, Mad World! The best looking game for the Wii since My Life as a King! Killzone 2 looks pretty great also - at least compared to the first one.

Very much so, RE4 reinvented the damned genre and RE5 adds coop.

And SF4 is a much needed jolt to the fighting community and is supposed to be goddamn superb. Though I'm almost as stoked for KoF XII as well.

I had fun with the Resident Evil 5 demo.  After playing L4D, RE5 might have a hard time competing in the co-op zombie killing department, but I'm still really looking forward to it.

Street Fighter IV looks likes a good bit of nostalgia (SF2 is really the only fighting game I ever got hooked on).  If you look back in the thread where it was announced, I started off pretty skeptical of SFIV, but they've sold me on it.

If I owned a Wii, I'd be getting really excited for MadWorld.

I liked the first Star Ocean 4 trailer that was shown.  Haven't followed it much since then, but I'll keep an eye on the reviews when it comes out and go from there.

Heard a lot of good things about Dawn of War II.  I imagine fans of the first one will probably like this one also.

I'm not excited about Madworld. When I first read about the game I thought it was very cool; but when I saw it in action something about its execution left me with a cold feeling.

I recently learned that this, House of the Dead *yawns* and The COnduit (another game I'm not excited about after seeing it in action) will be at comic con NY so I'm interested in buying a ticket just to demo these games. It also won't hurt to see what Comic Con is like for the first time ever.

The only thing I knew of before you asked was some members from Viewtiful Joe are part of the team. I've looked a little closer at the pedigree of platinumgames and the team is impressive.

That still doesn't make up for the fact whenever I watch the trailers in action they put me off and I'm the kind of guy who gleefully enjoyed over the top splatterfests like Sin City or Tarantino films or games like Quake3.

My attitude may change when I demo it.

Give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, he'll eat for a lifetime.

If all you've seen is a trailer, you're probably not particularly fit to judge something. Knowing where something comes from is as important if not more so (particularly before any said game releases). Now, it's entirely possible that it'll be shit. It's happened before (most notably - and recently - with Mistwalker and Blue Dragon & Lost Odyssey). But I fully expect people to know who worked on those games before they came out if they were going to give their opinions of it.

You know the folks working on some MMOGs, why not know the folks working on console games? Of course, this problem extends to a lot of designers in the industry who haven't played enough games and end up making the same mistakes over and over. I'd like to think I can hold people to a higher standard though.

tl;dr - Teach yourself and don't open your mouth if the only thing in it is dick.

If you want Phantasy Star or Shining Force, you could always get some of them on the Wii's Virtual Console as well. The Shining Force port is pretty good, and they just released Phantasy Star IV which I'm considering picking up. So emulators or the PS3 or Gametap or whatever isn't the only option for those.

I have no idea how you could look at Mad World trailers and not get a huge gamer chubby.

Shit, I looked up Madworld and got excited (mainly because of the style & art direction), and I don't even own any console systems, let alone a Wii.

Typically I ignore anything that isn't developed for PC or at least have a port in the works.

I've got the Dreamcast Genesis Pack that had PS2 on it.  (I think it has SF1 on it too.) I have the GBA cart with PS 1, 2, and 3 on it.

I bought the PS2 Genesis collection with PS 2, 3, and 4 on it.  I bought the GBA Shining Force 1 remake.

And why spend 6-8 bucks per Shining game when I can drop 30 and get 30+ games?

I show my love for Sega.  Sega just likes to hit me like we are in some Lifetime movie of the week.

"I love you Sega.  Here is your dinner.  Can.. can I please have Sega Ages PS2 Remakes?"

Instead they just beat us and release more shitty Sonic games everyone hates.   :heartbreak:

If all you've seen is a trailer, you're probably not particularly fit to judge something. Knowing where something comes from is as important if not more so ....

How about you stop throwing feces at the keyboard over someone else stating their opinion? I even implied I learned about the game before watching a trailer. It was the trailers that drained away that excitement. Your god complex won't stop me from expressing my opinion no more than I can stop you from being a pretentious jerk. Do you still want the last word? :oh_i_see:

It's really because I don't go around picking fights with people unlike schild. I actually can't believe the absurdity of an admin who has the first line in a reminder before registering:

If anyone wants a clarification of unwritten rule #245:  if you're an annoying, new-fish, moron that we'd really like to ban but probably won't; challenging a mod/admin to shut you up is a pretty easy ticket out the door.

Not sure if these were already listed. Two odds and ends..

Space and air combat is one of my favorite things, so I'm looking forward to Tom Clancy Hawx (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/41282.html) (especially since I own a PS3 and lack the Ace Combat series).

Stormrise (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/39825.html) (console rts) looks kind of cool. I think some of the Total War guys are involved? [edit] Actually, yeah.. It's from them. So basically their first sci-fi title?

I'm not sure what this is supposed to be mean though. Wikipedia:

A change in scenery won't be the only divergence, however. Rather than Total War's detached, general's-armchair view of battlefields, players will assume the role of frontline commander. The Creative Assembly will also introduce an element of "verticality," where units can be deployed in the air, on rooftops, at ground level, or below the planet's surface.

Frontline commander? Hmm..

Title: Re: The games of Q1 2009
Post by: HaemishM on December 24, 2008, 02:50:14 PM
Stormrise is coming on the PC as well. That trailer looks pretty awesome - though I'm thinking while it was rendered with the in-game engine, an in-game battle won't be quite that dynamic. Maybe - Dawn of War had some of the same kind of dynamic animations. Still, cool trailer.

Title: Re: The games of Q1 2009
Post by: stray on December 24, 2008, 02:53:08 PM
I'm really not so sure what's supposed to make it console specific, but that's what they bill it as - even at the end of the trailer. It gets a console first release too. So heads up! It might be a completely different thing once it hits PC's, who knows.

Grand Theft Auto IV: Lost & Damned (360) (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/43631.html)

That's a much better theme and protagonist than the original. Nico is lame.

It would be unfortunate for them to spend what little money they have in the coffers on marketing a game that will market itself. They have more important things to market. I could ramble off a list but that seems unnecessary.

Yup. The people that care about the franchise already know about it and The Sims has essentially an "infinite" shelf-life -- i.e. for as long as EA keeps making them stores will stock them given their perpetual best seller status -- so there's no need to try and pile in all the sales within a month or so like many other games that have very limited shelf lives.

My daughter discovered Sims2 a few weeks ago and has taken great pleasure in dismantling the newbie family.  The maid has moved in and gotten pregnant, which lead to the wife booting the husband out of the house (but not the maid..  :uhrr:).  The kids are failing school and the teenager cries all the time.  I hesitate to think of the havoc she can wreck in a new version.

But they don't want to get soft and complacent. Blizzard still does newbie incentives and markets the shit out of WoW.

The newbie incentives are probably cross-pollination from things like MySims Kingdom and Sim Animals or whatever it is with the commercial where a bear is using a Wiimote.  Promote the "sub-games" and you will probably draw some girls into The Sims main franchise as they get older.  I really don't see much need for promoting The Sims 3, but then Burger King still promotes the Whopper, so I don't know.

You guys reminded me that I have to have the new computer built before The Sims 3 arrives, else my balls will be relocated.

Considering I'm completely awestruck by Stone Soup, I'll doubt I'll be playing much of anything else.  I have never been this addicted to a game (maybe UO beta).  I've been playing it for about 2.5 weeks now and I love it more everyday.  How long this enthusiasm will last is a mystery to even me, but in the meantime I'm not throwing away money on a bunch of Q1 releases that will in all likely hood sit on my shelf.

However, with that said, SF4 + special edition super stick will be mine.

I recently downloaded Puzzlequest: Warlords from XBLA. I find it...strangely addicting. RPG crossed with a puzzle game mechanic? In fact, this is the number 2 reason I haven't started Ars Tonelico yet. The other being prep work for a pnp rpg I'm going to run starting Saturday.

Yep, I did.  Challenges are as inconsistent as the first.  Goddamn, some of them are a pain in the ass.

Still, it's the most fun I've had with a "sports" game in a long time.  The addons are nice, as getting off your board is a welcome addition.  The moving around of stuff is.. well, dicey at best.  I can never line anything up straight and stuff has absolutely zero mass.

Just a game you can sit down with for hours and get nothing done.  Find a spot, think of a trick you want to pull off, and then go at it until you get some nice footage.  I haven't gotten too good yet, mostly due to playing WoW and two other console games at the moment.
