Whats his story?

1)He's an American photographer who claims that as a child he witnessed a three car accident in which a little girl's decapitated head was ejected from the car and rolled to his feet, staring up at him with fishmouth. He spent his childhood collecting articles and information about mental disorders, physical defects, disease, human anomalies, etc. As a teen he would photograph carnival freaks. As an adult he began shooting extreme fetishists and human corpses, or pieces of corpses, that he's posed/modified to suit his needs. Ranging from things like that first picture linked to all the way to things like a bowl of fruit with parts of a human body mixed in. His work is more complicated than that, and he's very adept at darkroom processes to achieve the "antique" look you see. Not sure where he gets his corpses, but I'd read he was travelling out of the country because they're too hard to get here in the states.

So for those of you who don't want to see pictures of a human corpse, tough shit, you already did and you can't unsee it. Thank apocrypha.

2) The bird. It's a fucking bird. It looks way worse than it is - that's about the size the it's neck should be. 4/5ths of what you see of a bird is just feathers, if it was meat they wouldn't be able to fly because of the weight. It might have gotten an infection later and died, but otherwise it would have to be a minor wound that just bled alot.

3)Oh you can fuck right the fuck off the pedestal you think you're on. You're already much less of a person - not because you're desensitising yourself, because you have no fucking empathy for them to begin with. It's not suprising you wouldn't want to see third world children's deformities from treatable diseases, the wounded and dead from wars, long term homeless living with flyblown gangrenous limbs, and a host of other tragic things documented on film. All a direct end result of the job you personally do and the fucking wretched economic doctrine it enables. It's very easy to disregard the statistics and abstracts of the casualties of market capitalism, but if you were any sort of human at all and saw the actual results in color you'd resign out of self loathing and flee to a monastery. I could go on, but since it would be rude to turn this thread into a immigrant to the Politics forum consider this aspect of it closed, close your eyes, bow your head and weep for the hollow wretched thing that is your blackened, withered sense empathy and brotherhood with your fellow man.

That aside, as a nursing student I figure I need to be as desensitized to horrific wounds and trauma as I can be.

4) I thought you all wanted to see scary stuff, not deviantArt toons and carnie chest hair styles. The only people who should find anything fictional scary - especially this stuff - are children. I honestly did not realise that those were photographs of actual human corpses. I'd never researched Witkin tbh, just seen some of his work and found it disturbing and fascinating.

My sincere apologies if seeing those upset anyone. I think they're incredible photographs and go way beyond just an attempt to shock with gruesomeness, but if anyone requests I'll remove them from my post without hesitation.

Thanks, Merusk, that's what I was trying to get across.  If someone like bob wants to defend the posting or viewing of snuff (judging by me asking folks not to do it here, and him explicitly describing such a request as being on a "pedestal") then all I ask is that the thread is marked as NSFW for the technical reasons I mentioned, so that nobody gets into trouble in their work.

Went to see one of his shows in Manchester earlier in the year and was deeply underwhelmed tbh. Once you'd got over the initial "oh wow those are real dead people" feeling, which took about 30 seconds, there wasn't much more to it.

There simply wasn't enough in the way of labelling of the specimens and sections. Unless your anatomical knowledge was excellent you could not tell what was what very easily and it wasn't that interesting. Sad thing was that there was clearly some great skill used to prepare the exhibits (particularly the whole-body sections) but you could only tell that if you knew anything about pathology and sample preparation. At the end of the day it felt like just an extension of a Victorian freak show for some reason.

yeah, they had one of those shows here in phoenix for a while and I unfortunately missed it. I have always wanted to visit that exhibit and it sucks I was so clueless that it was in town.

I'll concede your points, apoc, however it was fascinating for me.  I kept being left behind because I was scrutinizing all the bits and pieces.  We also all learned that a man's bladder is indeed much larger than a woman's, which led to discussion.

Once plasticised I didn't consider them to be corpses exactly, but there were still creepy moments amid all of the anatomy-nerd stuff.  For me, one was the fat guy sliced into 2.54cm vertical sections, especially the face portions because it's a lot easier to distance yourself from someone with no skin.  Seeing a vertical slice of what was obviously an old fat guy, complete with hair, was slightly creepy.  The more interesting sculptures (like the X woman) were creepy because I was thinking what a nutjob von Hagens must be. :awesome_for_real:

That's a pretty good shop.  If you look *really* closely you can see that the baseline for "asian" doesn't quite match the rest of the line, but the discontinuity of the overhead cable (and the way the "a" seems to be occluded by it) hides it from first glance.
