Title: Music Video Thread
Post by: Teleku on November 07, 2008, 10:49:16 PM
So, I saw the Knights of Cydonia video, and I thought it was completely awesome.  Though that might be due to the fact I'm a fan of shitty 70's western and sci-fi B movies.

In any event, I began to wonder what other sorts of videos I've missed over the years.  I haven't really kept up at all in like, a decade.  All the god damn videos on MTV just consisted of the band jumping around and playing at some random place.  Boring.  So, I figured I'd make a thread where everybody can post their favorite music videos, through the power of youtube or what ever.  I'd really like this not to degenerate into art fag slap fighting over music taste, so please keep that down (though I suppose if the song sucks that will hurt the video a bit).

I'll get it started.  This list is no way inclusive of anything, and only consist of a bunch of random videos I can think of in my drunken stupor, to get things rolling:

Muse - Knights of Cydonia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jV1bRfLHA3A):  Absolutly love this video.  But again, might be because I'm a fan of the genre they are spoofing.

Fatboy Slim - Weapon of Choice (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMZwZiU0kKs):  I don't think I need to say anything else  :drill:

Beastie Boys - Sabatoge (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sbqIyeed4g):  Classic from my youth.  Along the same lines as Knights of Cydonia really.

Genesis - Land of Confusion (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MzShg7yXik):  I loved this when I was a child because of the puppets.  I loved it more when I grew up because of the political commentary, heh.

Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqyc37aOqT0):  I also loved this as a child because he does shit thats funny to kids.  Still stands up to time IMO.  Also see:  pretty much every other music video he made.

Cake - The Distance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__PU5CVSegg):  I don't know why, but I always like this one.  Just the reactions that the animals have when he runs by.  But probably just a lot of nostalgia from my youth, heh.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Az_7U0-cK0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Az_7U0-cK0) Aphex Twin - Come to daddy.  I remember being blown away when I first saw this video on mtv.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjAoBKagWQA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjAoBKagWQA) Bjork - All is full of love.  I like a lot of her videos, but this one is very much my favorite.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hglVqACd1C8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hglVqACd1C8) Tool - Sober.  I can't think of a single Tool video that isn't awesome.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3geoXOdnJQ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3geoXOdnJQ) Robert Palmer - Simply Irresistable.  Never cared that much for the song, but those dancers were hot as hell when I was a kid.  :drill:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELpmmeT69cE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELpmmeT69cE) Yes - Owner of a lonely heart.  Probably the only video I saw on mtv that weirded me out.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcOZ6xFxJqg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcOZ6xFxJqg) Men Without Hats - Safety dance.  I don't know why I like this song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNT7uZf7lew (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNT7uZf7lew) Men At Work - The land down under.  I just thought they were cool cause they were Aussies.  Spent many years wondering what the fuck vegemite was though.

Kanye West - Champion (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSBh3F8dm7o)

Bone Thugs - Tha Crossroads (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xpmr8Shy_UA)

Gnarls Barkley - Crazy - Slow Live Performance. Note all the musicians. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDWMVEEqQ_8)
Gnarls Barkley - Smiley Faces (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oc9nB3Odcq0)
Gnarls Barkley - Going On (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_R9fId_Rqo)
Gnarls Barkley - Run (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GA3a15xF0c)
Gnarls Barkley - Who's Gonna Save My Soul? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTVSygNKAsg)
Seriously, Gnarls probably does the best stuff ever other than those one-time genius productions like Bjork's It's Oh So Quiet and Dirty Vegas' Days Go By.

And let's not forget to perpetuate the myth that I'm a weaboo.

Eri Nobuchika - Voice (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NN2-x-RitLo)

Forgot about this.

Hasslehoff - Hooked on a Feeling (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJQVlVHsFF8)

Edit: Also...

Peter Schilling - Major Tom (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1Hs2AQwDgA)
Kraftwerk - The Robots (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXa9tXcMhXQ)
David Bowie - Life on Mars (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ueUOTImKp0k)
Madonna - Material Girl (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpAcz2tKaSM)
Misfits - Scream (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cc8EDKkmra8) - Yea yea, I know, no Danzig. Whatever.

I still like..

Primus - Winona's Big Brown Beaver (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CetPq_pkHc)

Primus also has a pretty cool music video for their version of The Devil Went Down to Georgia (though I defiantly like the original song better than their version):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FRtkek-Et4&feature=related

Also Schild, your right.  Gnarls Barkley makes some pretty awesome videos, thanks for posting those (I really really liked the Smiley Faces video).  And thanks for reminding me about the Hooked on a Feeling video.   :awesome_for_real:

What was the theme with the live performance of Crazy though?  I didn't really understand what the theme of the outfits they wore were suppose to be...

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=6fbcTRq_Tcg - E Nomine - Schwarze Sonne. The video features Ralf Moller, an ex bodybuilder who appeared in Gladiator and "The Scorpion King" and played Conan the Barbarian in a TV series

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Ehl_VQuKRTc - Dire Straights - Money for nothing. This was the first real attempt at serious computer animation, its hard to believe. This literally created Computer animation from whole cloth.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=k5JkHBC5lDs - Dire Straights - Brothers in Arms

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=JgmIjvHR44c - Billy Joel - Uptown girl. All you need to know about why I will never play Westlife on my weekly radio show. I love the dancing in this.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=AtyJbIOZjS8 - Micheal Jackson - Thriller. The full 13 minute(!) version. Look just watch it ok? Zombies and werewolves will never look the same again...

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=nL49yZNE4yk - Adele - Hometown Glory. I love the simplicity of this

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=HNojQd_ri_o Taize Chanting. Sound quality is crappy but wow I wish I could have been there. I have participated in Gregorian chanting and that was awesome but Taize blows my mind.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=GWc6QQ9JlMc Weird Al Yankovick - White and Nerdy. This is actually the first take of Al And Danny Osmond acting the idiot for the real video (which you can see at http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=-xEzGIuY7kw) and the real video is great but I love seeing Al and Danny doing their thing :)

You inspired me to share. This is not a music video so much as a fan montage, but it's from a group that combines my two favorite styles of singing -- Tuuvan throat singing and Bulgarian female choir.

ACDC You Shook Me All Night Long (http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=Bomv-6CJSfM) Probably helped influence my love of girls on bicycles and bulls, plus they rock!
Y&T Summertime Girls (http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=vhigmNrfEsU&feature=related) OMG! Did we all look that goofy back then?  No wonder each generation makes fun of how the "old man threads."
Billy Idol Dancing With Myself (http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=DONbY9wd6vU) Not sure, but I think he saved the world from zombies...still is rocking.
Joan Jett & The Blackhearts Crimson & Clover (http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=hdhonK8NMm8)  It was 1980 something and she was hot as hell in this video.
REM Furry Happy Monsters (http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=zkHM8xG6i8o&feature=related) wish I was stoned when I saw this :)
Kenny Rogers The Gambler (http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=kNnrTNFWcsg&feature=related) Jim Henson was a genius.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lEsLcGB7Vo - Boards of Canada - Dayvan Cowboy

Little information about the video:
On August 16, 1960 he (Joseph Kittinger) made the final jump from the Excelsior III at 102,800 feet (31,300 m). Towing a small drogue chute for stabilization, he fell for 4 minutes and 36 seconds reaching a maximum speed of 618 mph [1] (988 km/h or 274 m/s) before opening his parachute at 18,000 feet (5,500 m). Pressurization for his right glove malfunctioned during the ascent, and his right hand swelled to twice its normal size.[1] He set historical numbers for highest balloon ascent, highest parachute jump, longest drogue-fall (4 min), and fastest speed by a human through the atmosphere[2].

Schilds completly retarded thread on the best song of the 90's did remind me that I really liked the Tonight Tonight video.  That doesn't excuse the fucking retardedness of the statement he made and how he's trying to justify it, but oh well  :awesome_for_real:.  Figured I'd post it here a long with a bunch of other random 90's videos I was reminded of:

Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight Tonight (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_f7LF3IiKI).  Amazing video, and a wonderful song (I think).

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Otherside. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaeF00sqW34)  Same as above.  Does this count as a contender Schild (not sure if anybody mentioned it, only skimmed the thread for my sanity)?  Its pretty much exactly along the same lines as Tonight Tonight on everything you named.  Though I think the video came out in 2000, but the song was released with the Californication Album in the 90's.

Smashing Pumpkins - 1979 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrivjzw0RlI&feature=related).  Excellent job with potraying the nostalgia for the time.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Soul To Squeeze (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqJeWhtpVek).  Just really like the video.  Compliments the song greatly.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tn28aGYytxs).  Ditto.

Beck - Where it's at (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uQ9W4KexnA).  Not really the most elebroate video, but I always found it amusing.

Beastie Boys - Intergalactic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDS83yrM30Y).  Because its awesome, and because its even more hilarious since I've lived in Japan and actually run around the station they filmed the video in.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Rollercoaster of Love (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-lbIfaqm0U&feature=related).  Because we're on a 90's nostalgia trip.

The posting of some Rammstein earlier reminded me of this.  I saw this video when I went to Berlin back in my senior year of High School (to visit my sister who was studying abroad).  We turned on German MTV and this is what came on, and (being my first real time out of the country), I was like, wow, these people really are in fact fucking different from us.  Heh:

Rammstein - Sonne (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfHlA3fmJG0)

Also a few these other Japanese videos I saw while getting wasted in Japan.  I'm pretty sure now that the bar tender at this bar I saw both these videos at was a member of the Yakuza.  For one, he owned a bar (of which I was told the Yakuza own almost all bars in Japan), had tatoos all over his arm (Tatoos are pretty forbidden in Japanese society, as Yakuza only have them), and he handed my much more partying friend a giant ball of grade A hash one night behind the bar (getting even shit pot for a decent price in Japan is somewhat hard, as they have stricter laws, and my friend said this turned out to be really high end hash, which would be off the wall expensive to just give out).  So maybe their are some fond memories involved, but I liked the videos and the music:

Cro-Magnon - Riding the Storm (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1MriqmcMbw)  (I really want to make an animated gif of the begining where evolution goes from the small critter to the pin ball player, as an avatar....)

Cro-Magnon - 逆襲のテーマ (I can't remember WTF that translated to) (http://www.imeem.com/downlow/video/eAE241f3/cromagnon_cromagnons_revenge_mix/)

Also, I just wanted to say thank you for this.  It was suprisingly well done (not to take away from any of the other videos you and everybody else posted, but I thought this one was hilarious, and cool at the same time).

"Smack My Bitch Up" - The Prodigy. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eu4QlL6LLYg) Make sure you watch this one to the very end.  Oh, and NWS.

And for the "Well it's not the official video but it should have been" sweepstakes:

Well, its been almost exactly 4 years since this thread died.  Time to resurrect!

I'm really sad the vast majority of links in this thread are broken (you tube has really clamped down on music videos in the last few years, for some weird ass reason).  I'll try to update the ones I posted before to working links.  But here are some new cool videos I found:

Woodkid - Run Boy Run (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmc21V-zBq0) - Fun video I think is really neat.  I'm sure people can read all sorts of symbolism into it, but I just like it for what it is.

Justice - D.A.N.C.E. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sy1dYFGkPUE) - I don't think this was posted in the thread before, but might have missed it.

The Darkness - I Believe In A Thing Called Love (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRYNYb30nxU) - Same thing for this one.

Fair warning, all the Skrillex stuff is very dub step ear rapey electronic, which I know a lot of people here don't like.  I don't mind it, and his music videos are pretty neat:

First Of The Year (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cXDgFwE13g) - This video is awesome yet creeps me the fuck out.

Skrillex - Ruffneck (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_t2TzJOyops) - Drug abusing Santa Claus fighting people.  Nuff said.

NSFW:
Odd Future "Rella" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fN-xq7t6pKw) - This is one of the most random videos I've ever fucking seen, but I loved it.  If anything, you could make about 100 avatars and animated gifs out of it.  Also, again, NSFW.

Oh, and I almost forgot.  There's this Korean video I saw the other day.  Its really funny!  Have any of you seen it yet?

How did I miss this thread back then?! I am also noticing a distressing lack of Hurra Torpedo, but they don't really have music videos, so I guess that's ok.

There are plenty of  :why_so_serious: Hungarian music videos. I'll try to find a few, but for now, have some late 90s: Ranbo 13 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXLMEcJn7mM)

Mastodon - Deathbound (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xr9_e4ySRYA) - I love this video so much
Tom Waits - Tom Traubert's Blues (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XrkThaBWa5c) - One of my favorite songs of all time
David Lee Roth - Mean Street (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozmwfHFmLoY) - How does someone who can put out something that cool do something like this? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Olk8rZmlhY4) Oh, Diamond Dave.

Some of my favorite guitar solos to play:
Led Zeppelin - Since I've Been Loving You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZiN_NqT-Us) I wish all the cats at the blues jams knew this one - Bonus Corrine version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DznSalRqVBU) love her pipes
Allman Brothers Band - Jessica (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUPNARiJ2zo) The 00s lineup is really my favorite, the 70s and 80s versions are too coked up
Funkadelic - Maggot Brain (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXq4GlHgROQ) Play it like yo mama done died

This thread needs more:
Björk! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKSoBJ8WirE) , Plus it's animated by John Kricfalusi, so double the awesomeness.
Seeed - Aufstehn (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6JYzOjglBs) , the perfect Sunday morning song and Ceelo Green makes a cherry-on-top guest appearance.
Lykke Li - I'm good, I'm gone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRFybeuLh54) , seen her live a while back as well and it's one of those shows I'm pretty sure I'll never forget.
Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Aeroplane (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vV8IAOojoAA) , pure youth sentiment. I'm not much of a RHCP fan really and this is definitely one of their kitchiest videos, but it just catapults me right back to my teens and makes me remember the nineties were fucking awesome .

Navarro RHCP? FAIL

Television (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7o9luZwNSuE) ftw. I think By the Way might now be my favorite RHCP, though BSSM is really the RHCP of the 90s. Never mind, BSSM is one of the best albums ever creatified.

Navarro RHCP? FAIL
I never understood the hate for Navarro's one album with them.  I enjoyed the heck out of it.  I can totally get it being a different direction than BSSM and earlier though and maybe that turned people off.  Personally I haven't really liked anything they've done since One Hot Minute - Californication and the ones afterwards were played to death on the radio and I just didn't get into them.

I also enjoyed that album (as well as almost everything RHCP has ever done), so don't get the hate on that either.  But in any event, as I mentioned in my original (4 year old post), I want this to be a thread where we post cool music videos.  Not the thread where we argue over what music is good or shitty, and just post songs we like.  We have a music thread for that.

Yeah, Neo used to make some amusing cartoony music videos. Here's another - Persuaders (http://vimeo.com/18009800) (youtube link here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLBv5VSyqaQ) - it's blocked in Hungary, may not be blocked in the US. No idea why, since it's the official channel of the band...)

Also, in order to reach the grief-link quota in this post, I am obligated to mention an example of terrible Hungarian pub music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=786ymb-onpk) (dat CGI!)

I know, I know...no commentary. But Vai bugs me with his rockstar 'rhythm section sit and be boring behind me' nonsense that infuriated me as a bassist.

And to contribute...he had a couple decent tracks on his first albums, The Attitude Song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_jMMF6AP28) and Viv Woman (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YAzzdd9dwM).

Though I was more into Yavinkie Amalchuck. Black Star (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blNQZc84Q5c=) Though also another egotistic douche that kept his rhythm section boring for the most part. And of course the Satch Boogie (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCGCG_N2b30) was huge.

Technically not a 'video', since its just live footage with good editing, I submitt a Buckethead (http://youtu.be/ptKIjo2oLBI) starter video. You don't really need to make a video of him, tho, since its all about the playing. If you like this song, check out "Soothsayer" as one of the most epic instrumental metal songs ever.
