Anyone remember The Incredible Machine? This is pretty fun. You can save and link your contraptions and share with everyone. Here's an example of one of mine: http://fantasticcontraption.com/?designId=118232 Title: Re: How to Waste Time at Work: Another Flash Game Post by: Ozzu on July 28, 2008, 09:12:59 PM Man. Title: Re: How to Waste Time at Work: Another Flash Game Post by: Cyrrex on August 01, 2008, 07:22:23 AM I think it's in my nature to always attempt the simplest possible solutions (vehicles, brute force, etc.). Solution to Unpossible. Even though it's the 20th puzzle, I'm not sure it's the hardest. I had a harder time with the "Handling" puzzle. The build your own course thing sounds fun but not if no one you know can play it or even view it. I bought the full version earlier tonight and it's pretty sweet. There are hundreds of user-designed levels. I just jumped right in and went to the hardest one I could find in the first few pages of levels. The one I found I'm sure will supply hours of entertainment. Think of the Tube level, except about halfway up the tube, it hangs a right, and a few lengths over from that, it goes up again. How in the hell I'm supposed to do this, I have no clue, but it sounds like fun. The good thing about the level list is that there's a rating for level quality and a separate rating for level difficulty. Good way to filter out the riffraff. Tried to do things without vehicles....
Down under: http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=211301 (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=211301) Four Balls: http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=210899 (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=210899) Back and forth: http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=212390 (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=212390) Handling: Ok, so I used a vehicle... sort of... http://fantasticcontraption.com/?designId=212173 (http://fantasticcontraption.com/?designId=212173) My fave was probably Four Balls, took forever to get right. Title: Re: How to Waste Time at Work: Another Flash Game Post by: NiX on August 04, 2008, 04:21:09 AM Yeah, I tried to do that with Four Balls, but I couldn't get it to work like you did. Damn impressive.
Title: Re: How to Waste Time at Work: Another Flash Game Post by: Ironwood on August 04, 2008, 04:26:19 AM So close.. yet so far. You were pretty close, all you really needed to do was increase the size if your little box thingy, add some more wheels, and completely fucking break the collision detection. http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=205645 Heh. I like you. Title: Re: How to Waste Time at Work: Another Flash Game Post by: lamaros on August 04, 2008, 04:45:37 AM Some of the brilliant solutions to handling I've seen:

Title: Re: How to Waste Time at Work: Another Flash Game Post by: Goreschach on August 04, 2008, 12:55:18 PM This is the best I've managed on Four Balls. http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=223629
I'm about 90% sure it can't go any smaller on this level. At one point, I got 3 balls with 3 pieces, but couldn't tweak it to get the last one. Seems to be a limited trend, don't know how you make it happen tho... Something about how the arms are attached to the wheel I think. Title: Re: How to Waste Time at Work: Another Flash Game Post by: Stewie on August 05, 2008, 02:23:36 PM Bunk showed me this game and I have to admit it is pretty awesome.
I think the best part for me is that "doh, why didn't I think of that!" moment of seeing what other ingenious minds can come up with, cause I am a dumbass. To that end I have created a level and wanted to see if any of you can come up with a solution to it. http://FantasticContraption.com/?levelId=2451 Title: Re: How to Waste Time at Work: Another Flash Game Post by: schild on August 05, 2008, 02:35:09 PM Hmmm, have to have the full version to play a playermade level.
Title: Re: How to Waste Time at Work: Another Flash Game Post by: Alkiera on August 05, 2008, 05:54:33 PM For those of you looking for more variation or some greater limitations, there's Armadillo Run (http://www.armadillorun.com/). Similar idea; it's a download(win32 only) instead of flash, there's no 'wheel' element, the ball needs to stay in the (generally smaller) target area for a few seconds to qualify, and the pieces have a 'hardness' to them, that means under stress, they break. Results in a bit more rigor required than in this flash game, where just any random wackiness will hold together, in Armadillo run, it breaks into pieces. This can be a good thing, and all according to plan. Often, though, not so much.
Also, parts cost 'money', and each level has a budget you need to beat to move on; your expenses are how the game is scored online. If you register, you get more pre-made levels, and access to fan-made stuff. Title: Re: How to Waste Time at Work: Another Flash Game Post by: schild on August 05, 2008, 05:59:34 PM Shame it's only win32.

Not that it was hard by any stretch, but my first ever run at "around the bend" was stupidly complicated and required many attempts to make work. And then I when for the minimal approach.
One Piece "Around the Bend" http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=309102 (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=309102) One Piece "On a Roll" http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=309452 (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=309452) Title: Re: How to Waste Time at Work: Another Flash Game Post by: stark on August 08, 2008, 10:51:39 AM It's funny how easy you can really make some of these. My brain just assumes that friction is at work, but it clearly isn't. Anyway, I added another one-piecer above, and I refuse to believe that removing the stick is going to be possible.
And it's probably been done, but here's a one piece Mission to Mars: http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=310119 (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=310119) And here's the simplest Four Balls I can come up with. I bet it can be reduced further: http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=311028 (http://FantasticContraption.com/?designId=311028) Title: Re: How to Waste Time at Work: Another Flash Game Post by: Samwise on August 08, 2008, 12:06:10 PM There is definitely friction; the vehicles wouldn't work otherwise. There's just no air resistance or microscopic imperfections.
Title: Re: How to Waste Time at Work: Another Flash Game Post by: Cyrrex on August 08, 2008, 12:09:23 PM There is definitely friction; the vehicles wouldn't work otherwise. There's just no air resistance or microscopic imperfections. You are right, of course. Maybe it's more accurate to say that the friction that is present is not as robust as it could be. Or maybe there is a better word for it. Title: Re: How to Waste Time at Work: Another Flash Game Post by: Samwise on August 08, 2008, 12:18:08 PM If you roll a marble across a really smooth floor, it'll keep going for a good long time. The forces most likely to stop it are air resistance (assuming the air in the room is generally still and not moving along with the marble) and small imperfections in the marble, floor, or both (tiny dents, bits of dust, a sticky spot, anything that might result in a slight collision and redirection or reduction of momentum rather than a perfectly smooth contact).
The game world exists in a vacuum. All of its round objects are perfectly round, and all of its flat surfaces perfectly flat. And the wheels have an infinite power source that will accelerate them to arbitrarily high speeds if there's no resistance. Those are the main things that make some models seem "unrealistic".
