Title: Go To 11 Post by: stu on April 03, 2008, 04:47:47 PM I'm not sure how, but I stumbled into this news from California. Last year, the DMV in Sacramento received complaints about a local lawyer's license plate: GO 2 11. The basis for the offense was that someone felt it meant "Go to Hell."
Anyways, the lawyer's formal response was pretty funny, so here it is in PDF glory: http://www.spinaltapfan.com/go211letter.pdf (http://www.spinaltapfan.com/go211letter.pdf) If this has been posted before, apologies. It's worth another gander. :-) Title: Re: Go To 11 Post by: Samwise on April 03, 2008, 04:56:51 PM That's so awesome.
Title: Re: Go To 11 Post by: Abagadro on April 03, 2008, 10:06:12 PM That was pretty sweet. Sometimes being a lawyer can be quite fun. I have a file at home with some of my more cheeky letters where I basically tell people to "fuck off asshole" without really doing so in so many words.

Title: Re: Go To 11 Post by: K9 on April 04, 2008, 07:03:59 AM What's sad is that someone has the time to actually register a complaint about that sort of thing.
The response was all kinds of awesome though. I'm going to bet it was a gamer that plays on a RP server. Title: Re: Go To 11 Post by: WayAbvPar on April 04, 2008, 08:03:31 AM This guy can be my lawyer any time.

Title: Re: Go To 11 Post by: Abagadro on April 04, 2008, 09:01:47 AM I can't really post them because they contain too much confidential information. I will reproduce one of the juicier exchanges from very early in my career though. I was covering for another lawyer who was out of town and one of the other parties to an agreement wouldn't live up to it. I basically just informed his attorney that if he didn't come up with the money as required we would do some nasty stuff like foreclosures and seeking default of a Settlement Agreement, etc. Real standard stuff. My client was/is a hard-core businesswoman who didn't take shit from anyone and charged me with getting the money or taking appropriate action. His lawyer went all nutso on me and started accusing my client of fraud. After a bunch of exchanges he got all personal on me. After a bunch of chest-bumping he did about how he was chairman of this or that subcommittee of the Bar, here are verbatim excepts from our last exchange with his letter first and then mine.
Quote The additional purpose of this letter is to inform you that I think your conduct in this case has been outrageous. You have caused both your client and mine to incur substantially more fees than have been remotely necessary. I am tired of your threats and deadlines. Because I couldn't understand why you can't control your client, I called the Bar myself this morning and I have discovered that you passed the Bar as recently as October 1996. You have barely practiced law a year. By contrast, I have been a lawyer 16 years. The fact of the matter is that if you can't control your client, she should get another lawyer and you should withdraw form representing her. Be advised that I am a neighbor of [a named partner of my firm] and I know several others in your firm. As a securities lawyer, I have known [another partner in my firm] for years. When this is over, be advised that I intend to write a letter to your firm and inform them of your conduct. You have caused you client (and mine) substantially more fees than have been remotely necessary and were your client to know that you have created dispute for dispute's [sic] sake, only adding to her fees, I have little doubt that she would file a Bar Complaint against you. The last bit of my response: Quote As to the remainder of your letter of April 1, 1998, I will not even dignify it with a response. I am perfectly comfortable with my conduct in this case and the only outrageous actions have been on your part. While I have indeed practiced law for only a year and a half, your sixteen years of practice have apparently drained you of civility. Please feel free to contact anyone you wish at this law firm to discuss my conduct. I have already discussed the matter with senior members of this firm and, as your reputation precedes you, I am not worried. Good day. The postscript to this is that the client I was representing there for the first time to cover ultimately became my #1 client and probably paid me over 100 grand in fees over the years. That is just pure win. What a douche. Title: Re: Go To 11 Post by: Llava on April 04, 2008, 12:27:11 PM Apropos of nothing, OMG WTF is not available in NY state. I SO wanted that plate. I've actually seen the guy who has CTHULHU here in Arizona. And no, I didn't and don't know him. |
