I was talking to a friend how I've been visiting here a lot lately and how I planned on making donations and such to support it. Then he said something very alarming to me. He basically said this site was not up to par with professional standards and that basically not to waste my money. I've been visiting the main page for awhile reading the news and such. So I'm suprised this is so... But what he said sounded very damaging-

1. He said that the moderators here are all volunteers and they flame people daily
2. There is no rules here at all, posts can get edited by mods at will. They can even change the context of your posts
3. He says he doesnt even believe that the traffic reported at the bottom is true
4. He also said my donations will probably just go straight to the owner's pockets anyway cause f13 coulda had advertisers here many years ago if they were more professional

Wrap it all up he said I was better off spending my time at other well known gaming sites that has a lot more content.

Are these allegations true do moderators here flame people w/o warning and also they allow people to edit my posts? There's no way I'd want to be apart of such a site if this is true so I hope not. Guess I'm asking is this site run by "straight-up people"? Not some power hungry nerds like my friends describe

I have never had reason or cause to think this site is any form of sham, or that its run by unsavory people, in fact its got some of the best moderation anywhere.

Most of us come here to avoid the levels of white noise found elsewhere.  If you like what you see here, great.  If not, find something else that suits you better.  It's pretty simple.

1a.  The moderators are all volunteers, except for some that have been forced into indentured servitude.
1b.  It is easily observed that non-moderators flame people daily.  Editing posts can only be done by Moderators and Admins.  The moderators mostly talk about people in our Sekret Forum.  Welcome to the Internet, be sure to wear your helmet.
2.  There are rules.  Your friend probably doesn't know what they are.  They can be discerned by lurking.
3.  I don't know anything about this, but since we don't have ads at the moment it shouldn't be pertinent.
4.  F13 had advertisers just a few months ago.  Banners at the top of the forum.  Turns out most people block ads.  Who knew?

Maybe you are better off spending your time elsewhere.  That's up to you to decide.  If you let your probably-banned-from-here-and probably-GeldonYetich friend tell you which web sites to visit, you most likely are better off reading about Duke Nukem Forever on Gamespot or perhaps his why-do-internet-people-hate-me blog.  Before you go, however, I'd suggest you take a hard look at "Gaming Journalism".  You might find that being "professional" is a rare thing, and maybe it's better to be in this for the love of the industry rather than love of whatever Kotaku loves.

I'd like to speak about the money, Schild has never used any money made from the site for personal gain. Up until recently any money gained had been used immediately to pay server fees anyway.

F13 moderators are strong moral individuals (moreso than you'd expect  :awesome_for_real:), and there are extensive behind the scenes discussion of things that you and your friend aren't privvy to.

I don't know where you're getting these traffic numbers, just check Alexa, you'll see that we do okay.

Some people get the site, some people don't.  This isn't IGN, if you post with the grammatical prowess of a 10 year old, you will get treated like a 10 year old.

I've never had a problem with anything on this site. The moderation has struck me as being more fair than most places.

Secondly, if you donate money to ANYONE ON THE INTERNET, you should never ever expect one goddamn thing in return. Ever. I don't care who it is, what they are saying the money is for, or anything. Donating means you are giving the money out of "the goodness of your heart." Once you donate (i.e. give a gift), you should never expect that that money is used for anything but hookers and beer. Expecting anymore is just setting yourself up for disappointment. A donation is not a transaction where you get something for your donation, it's a gift. If you donate money to schild and he takes it to Amsterdam to buy prostitutes, hash and a turn at the American tourist torture hostel, you have no cause to be pissed off because you donated money to someone you've never met in real life over the Internet. Getting pissy about what the money is spent on is retarded and only serves to give you an ulcer.

Thirdly, what does it matter how much traffic this site gets? Is there discussion you like on here? If yes, join in. If you get flamed, flame back.
