One of the finest films I have seen in a long time.

If you haven't, you should.

Wait, wait.. this has to be sarcastic.

I would never guess this would pass your muster.

Edit: for the record, I liked it.  Wasn't perfect, but I was entertained.

Napoleon Dynamite was like getting beat up by nerds.

Juno was like getting beat up by awkward hipster low-lifes.

This movie, the dialogue and the culture surrounding it is utter trash. Ironwood, how the fuck could you possibly enjoy this thing?

Edit: To be fair, I only HEARD this movie, the cinematography and people in it made it so I couldn't even stand watching it. And I made it all the way through Teeth, so there must've been something wrong.

Edit 2: Removed the low-blow. Unnecessary. The more I know about Ironwood's past, the less I can assume he's a bot.

Necro: This movie finally showed up on HBO saturday and I had a chance to watch it, so I'm going to chime in.  I loved it.  It was quirky and wonderful in ways that Napoleon Dynamite wanted to capture.  I loved the relationship dynamics, the message, and the hope found in a time of panic.

Quite the opposite, but you know that.

I have an attractive 15 year old daughter and imagine that something similar could happen to her.  It helped me to empathize with the main character and better appreciate the situation and the choices she was forced to make, especially with regard to family and peer dynamics.  It's a movie that makes you take a look at your life, your reactions, and the bigger picture.

I liked the movie, not great, but enjoyed it.  I think I liked the soundtrack more though.

The dialog just KILLED this movie for me. It tried so hard to be so hip and cool and boppy. Instead, it ended up sounding awkward and artificial.

My daughter talks a lot like the movie dialog as do her 15 year old friends.  I found it to be pretty well written and fairly accurate for the typical precocious teen in the Minneapolis area.  Could explain why I liked the movie more than I would had it been set in CA or NY.

I watched this last night, thought it was cute but I didn't like it anywhere near the way the GF did.

Something about it was bothering me but I didn't realize what until this morning.  I think the entire movie was cleverly phrased anti-abortion propaganda.  Not that there is anything wrong with having a movie with a message, it's just that the movie had pretty much nothing to do about the baby or the difficulty of the 'choice'.  It's message had everything to do with the girl still being 'cool' even though she had had a child.

To me it was kind of saying, "If you are a teenager and get knocked up you should have the child.  Your life will still be great, you can keep your boyfriend, your parents will love you even more and you even get to pig out on food!"

Damn, now I want to be a 15 year old chick and get pregneant, because that sounds just awesome!  awesome, for real

I'm with others though, I just didn't like it and it was mostly due to the fact that I also didn't like the dialogue.

On the flipside, another strong message of the movie was that teenage mothers need lots of support and understanding from those around them for things to work out well.  So it's not like it's politically conservative by any stretch.   why so serious?

I can't seem to wrap my head around (here and elsewhere) why this movie is pretentious or "hipster" ish. The girl is a little quirky, yeah, but she isn't really a "hipster". She likes the Stooges. Nothing wrong with that. Besides, the core of the movie is about a teen pregnancy and the future adoptive parents. Pretty simple. I watched the movie identifying with Jason Bateman's character, and resenting Jennifer Garner, but damn, the movie made me feel guilty about that, rethinking my own priorities. It's a very non-pretentious message in the end.

Why does everything always strike people as "propaganda"?

Granted, some may extract the anti-abortion sentiment from the flick but at its base, it was a story, a fine, enjoyable film where if it was a "message" piece, it at least it wasn't one that was rammed down your throat. It was a tale of a social dilemma, artfully done with all the relational interactions, and definitely not black/white as even the unsympathetic characters were not total evil and those favorable were in some cases extremely flawed…

I really enjoyed the music soundtrack too, it fit the film like a glove, and implored me to pick up some Kimya Dawson (and the other band(s), one of which I think she sang as a duet).

I watched this last night, thought it was cute but I didn't like it anywhere near the way the GF did.

There may have been some anti-abortion message in it, but if anything, pretty indirectly. She did go to an abortion clinic, if you recall... But that was early in the movie, and lasted but 3 minutes before she changed her mind to look for adoption choices. After that, I think the movie had an unlikely message about being "cool". Jennifer Garner's character, with her love and desire for children, even if she was sort of square, turned out to be "cool". Jason Bateman turned out to be immature, not cool at all, and despite all of the pop-culture stuff Juno liked him for, she ended up despising him because he couldn't grow up. The only message I saw about it being OK for Juno to not grow up was the fact that she wasn't grown up. She was 16 and not ready. Didn't seem to be saying anything deeper than that.

Because the dialogue tried PAINFULLY hard to be hip and instead came off sounding forced. It was like post-Pulp Fiction Tarantino dialogue - all artifice. It sounds unnatural and it makes the characters sound artificial.
