Don't get me wrong - I'm very aware of exactly how important Schulz was to the strip movement and I have a few collected editions of the first years of Peanuts, and they're wonderful - very much of their time, it's true - you hit the nail on the head with why C&H is so emotive to our generation - as Peanuts was back then. But yeah, it's the latter years of Schulz' life that spoil the splendour. I still admire his work ethic - never missed a single strip but for one tiny sabbatical in the 90s - 50 years of daily strips is astounding work. To be brutally honest, and it's a sentiment I seem to share with others here like yourself - I'd happily read any Peanuts retread than put up with a single fucking Garfield strip.

I'm quite fond of Peanuts -- recently I've been reading the very nice fantagraphics hardcover collections and it's been fascinating to see the strip evolve.  I'm not sure if I'll keep collecting them all the way through to the end or stop in the 80s.  Schulz definitely starts seriously hitting his stride in the mid-60s and pushes the boundaries of his material in the 70s, I think.  It's kind of impressive how *dark* some of the material is, really.  Charlie Brown is not a happy kid.

Peanuts also reminds me of my grandfather (sadly no longer with us) who had an extensive collection of the old paperback collections of the comics that I read whenever I visited my mother's parents when I was young.  There's a bit of nostalgia when I crack open a big collection of Peanuts comics and read through, for that reason.

That said, I grew up with Calvin & Hobbes and Bloom County and they remain my favorites from back when I was aware of and actively following newspaper comic strips.  I think Calvin & Hobbes has aged better, but I still have a soft spot for Opus and his buddies.

Considered awesome picture, but it just makes me laugh to much when I see it:

Some might call this somehow cruel but really, all the stick would do is piss the bear off.

But not a picture.
There is probably about 800 words in it, so would that make it 4/5ths of a picture?
