Didn't see a thread on this.

http://www.massively.com/2009/11/04/funcom-receives-grant-to-create-extreme-sports-mmo/

Quote
Funcom has been given a grant worth NOK 1.5 million -- $262,000 US -- in order to create a new extreme sports MMO. Funcom's Director of Communications Erling Ellingsen says "Yes, I can confirm that Funcom is working on a new project called Board with the World. This will be a free-to-play social MMO focusing on the world of extreme sports. [...] First and foremost we will be focusing on snowboarding, with the possibility of adding different sports later. We also want this to be a social world rich with different types of media content and pop-cultural elements such as music, video and even fashion. It is definitely exciting, and we look forward to revealing more on this later."

Work on the project is expected to begin in January 2010, and we can expect more details as it progresses.

Huh.

But that Captain's salami tray was tight, yo. You plump for the roast pork loin, dogg?

That's not enough money to create the ad campaign necessary to promote BOARD WITH THE WORLD XTREEEEME (which I assume is the official title).

Maybe it'll be like Skifree.  You can snowboard down the mountain then you get eaten by a Sasquatch!   awesome, for real

I'm thinking this is really just going to be a little mini-MMO more like Webkinz or something like that, a straight-up promotional thing. Funcom can pimp it to say, "See, we really are a good investment, give us more capital, we have lots of projects and clients" and the clients can pimp it and say "Extreme sports is staying up to date, it's down with the kids of today, using new technology". Everyone else can yawn: circle jerks are mostly fun for the participants.

Do people still do extreme sports? I thought those disappeared.

If you can read this, you're on a board populated by misogynist assholes.

People still do extreme sports, they just don't get television time and people generally stopped calling them extreme sports.

In Funcom's shareholder information a while back they indicated they would be releasing two casual MMOs for the end of 2009. Guess one of them probably got culled and this one is out early 2010.

Although yeah, I do wonder what kind of business model this is meant to work on.

They've also been given a rather large grant to get the fucking Dreamfall Chapters going, but as you've noticed, those have been reappropriated.

EVE (inactive): Deakin Frost -- APB (fukken dead): Kayleigh (on Patriot).
