the Confederate flag underneath the stone in my class ring

WWW
on: August 12, 2004, 02:17:00 PM

So I'm in an online league of ESPN NFL 2k5 over on the Morlocks.com and played my first game last night. I had a blast, even though I got soundly trounced by the Saints. Yes, I suck, thank you muchly.

I wouldn't mind running another of these leagues for us 13's. It generates a schedule and allows the commish to set up how often you have to play games (Morlocks allows 1 week to play your appointed game). Difficult levels are set to the default settings (pro, all-pro, etc.). You start the season with the default online rosters, and you can trade between teams that are actually in the league (i.e. no free agents from teams no one selected).

My thought was we wait to start the league until Sega releases the updated rosters, sometime around the first week of September. I think we need a minimum of 6-8, and probably shouldn't have more than 10-12 players.

Any interest?

The later the start the better (so I can learn how to play!), but I am in for sure. Every league needs a doormat.

I'm loving the sheer number of stats ESPN Videogames keeps for you. I just spent the last 30 minutes reading over the play by play of the game that Haem lost (which was closer then the score indicated imo). The online league stuff is awesome.

Next week: BUCS vs. COLTS -- I'll try not to run the score up on you Haem ;)

How do the leagues work?  Is there a game a week, or do you play free for all accumulating points and then use the points to determine a playoff bracket?

I would like to know what I am getting into before I say anything.  I would be interested on the surface.  Even though I find I usually suck vs other humans.  I know anyone who actually plays sports games so I find my success is usually vs cpu only.

In the themorlocks league, we play a game a week. There's 8 teams so we all play each other twice during a 16 week run. I believe that the commissioner has the option to advance the week once everyone has played their weekly games.

We've just started so not a whole lot more info then that. I'm unsure about any sort of playoffs or anything of that nature.

I'm sure you'll kick my unholy ass, Murdoc. I R TEH SUCK ON DEFENSE. But you are right, up until about the end of the 3rd quarter, I could still have gotten back in it.

You play one game a week, I think for 16 weeks. You are given a date by which your game has to be complete; if your game isn't complete, it's up to the commissioner to determine how to award the game. The commish can set up minutes per quarter and such (Morlocks league is 7 minute quarters, which makes for a game of decent length).

I definitely wanted to start AFTER the roster update in September, because of how much change these rosters will go through between now and then. I know one of you bastards will want to play the Dolphins and Rickey "I smoke dope because I'm tired of football" Willians.

Oh, you pick one team. I'd like to pick either the Packers or the Colts. Alluvian if you want the Pack, I'll take the Colts.

List your X-Box Live gamertag and your top two choices for teams. In case of two people wanting the same team, I'll figure something out.

Fav team- Seattle
2nd Fav team- Damn...so many choices. How about Minnesota?

Arc, what games do you own? I will add you to my friend list if we have any common games- I have NCAA 2k5, ESPN 2k5 (obviously), Crimson Skies, and Links 2k4.

Edit- played my first online game last night (NCAA). Got whipped 21-0. The controls seemed just a hair sluggish; is this typical for online play? I could adjust to it, I suppose.

Links
MechAssault (favorite)
Crimson Skies (kinda sucks online)
Madden (still learning)
both of the Clancy squad combat games (forgot the name)

I think thats about it - I mostly play Mech and Links, tho. Not too huge on online sports because people will exploit any flaw in the AI to bust out a monster win, and that kinda not really what I play online sports titles for.

Hey guys,

I'm the one running the Morlocks league, and since we're off to a slow start we're going to be restarting it.  From this thread and our existing league members we've got a total of 12 people interested.

So, when we restart this league, you're all welcome aboard.
I'll post additional information about the league signup info as I get it.

Right now with the morlocks who are playing, I'm asking for a $20 donation (LOL 4 ME HAHAZ).  Half of which is going to a charitable cause for MacReedy, the other half goes to the victor of the league.  If you folks want in on that, its K-rad by me.  If not, that's fine too.  The winnings will be divvied up to the highest ranked paying member at the end of the season.  For a special incentive, even if you aren't planning on kicking in, you'll be playing for this:

Are you down with that?!  I thought so.  Any personal questions, concerns, whatever email me discokid@new.rr.com.  DON'T leave me PM's on either this site or the morlocks as I won't see them until too late.

Visit http://www.themorlocks.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&p=25487#25487
for the current "Official" league thread.

Edited to add:

How would you guys like to do team pickings in a fair and balanced way?
I can do it as "First person to get their team choices to me after midnight on XX day (which leaves me in the cold a bit)" or use a random number generator to match up names with teams, etc, any suggestions appreciated!

I am not down with giving $10 to somebody I don't know over the internet, and not really thrilled with this playing for money with the other $10.  Probably won't be joining this league, nothing personal.

As a suggestion on team choices, the simplest idea that comes to my mind is basically the old drawing names out of a hat thing.  You can do that electronically of physically.  Just have whoever is the most trusted do it.  Then just pick teams in the order drawn.  On this site the team choices seemed to be based on real life team favorites, not cheesy choices of ingame best teams.  Since that is the case there does not appear to be a LOT of overlap.  Some for sure, but I think we can all come up with a backup or two.  Easier since you can always still play your favorite ingame teams playbook so that at least you know the plays still.

No, you don't have to pay to play.  Sorry if that's how it sounded.  You can play for free, I'm asking MORLOCK members and any one else who either knows me or is interested in pitching in for a good cause to do so.  You have 0 obligation to pay anything to get in the league though.

Also, we've got a couple rules to reduce cheese plays: You may not run your quarterback more than twice per quarter UNLESS he is facing immenent danger of being sacked, and scrambling is your only option. This rule is in effect because of the unfair quarterback speed settings in the game (Kurt Warner and Brett Favre do not have the ability to sprint 15 yards through the D in real life.). AND NO KICKING ONSIDE KICKS EVERY TIME DAMMIT.

So far, everyone seems to be playing it as actual FOOTBALL which is cool.

I'm cool with merging the two leagues. The money is only for those who want to put it in or who can put it in. I r still teh broke (yes, haw haw I'm poor) so nothing from me yet, but I would simply because MacReedy's illness is a pretty sudden and debilitating thing. I think it's ultra-cool that Disco wanted to pony up some money for this charity.

I can't wait 'til Sept. 7th when they finally get the damn rosters updated.

Thank God I have Simeon Rice or my defense would be terrible.

Fucking Rice... every goddamn time I turned around, he was in Peyton's face. Can't a brother get some blocking?

I made it interesting, but my defense still sucks. And holy crap, are the Colts' cornerbacks teh sux are what? They are going to have a helluva time covering anybody this year.

Heh, I admit to laughing my ass off when Alstott ran 3 of your secondary right the fuck over.

Shoulder charge 4tehwin and whatnot.

Rice is a monster in that game, I think you got away a ton of passes seconds before I hit you. I was wondering how much abuse Manning was gonna take before we were gonna see an injury.

I will admit to one thing, I took a pass interference penalty on purpose, just so I could cream Harrison as you came across the middle hehe.

You seemed to have a lot of dropped passes too, which really hurt you in the first 1/2

Don't worry, you'll have to fight me tooth and nail for the "He who Sucketch Wind" award. I was 0-2 in the Morlocks league with the Colts (who I'd like to stick with now that I'm getting used to them). My tackling blows.

I'll probably be doing front page writeups as time permits on the weekly games.
