Get a mustache guys! 471 - Because the young ladies admire it Can affirm. Many years ago I grew a mustache because my girlfriend suggested it. I shaved it off after we broke up. That she admired it was the only reason I had it. Fortunately I found another young lady that was willing to let me get by without growing another one.

My 94 year old grandfather, last living grandparent, sent all of his eleven grandchildren some money because he was concerned we might be having COVID related economic troubles. I gave him a thank you call and we talked for about an hour, with lots of stories from his past (with details I found out my mother didn't know) but mainly returning again and again to how if I went to church more I could meet and marry someone.
Anyway, 2/3rds of the way through the conversation, while talking about a visit from one of my aunts, he said something painfully sweet:
"I miss my wife. I miss her every day. But I'm never lonely: I have children, I have grandchildren, I have great-grandchildren. She surrounds me."
Family is exasperating sometimes, but it's an idea full of poetry.

With the way the Post Office is running that's probably not the best idea.

Tuned in, immediately get to watch cringey Ubisoft talking head offering her deepest sympathies to the families impacted by the Orlando shooting while flanked by a man in a giraffe suit and some sort of "horrifically garish neon costumes through the ages" exhibit or something. We need to stop this fucking planet right now and sort some shit out. -Kail

I ended up with a 7th cat, but he looks pretty much like the other 5 grey tabbies, so no need for pictures. I sometimes wonder if my one yellow cat feels like he's a freak, or a god.

Apparently, my cat is the neighborhood bully. He's only going outside because he's a noisy jerk unless he gets some time outside. Looks like we're going to be doing pandemic on challenge mode for a while. Yay.

signing up for payroll deduction for my parking permit counts as "owing the University money" as far as putting holds on records goes That is definitely some five star university bureaucracy there... Good luck on the return to academic life though!

Surreal moments today - I went into my office to clean out my cubical and stop by the pharmacy for my wife. Place was completely empty and I was trashing all my old notes and notebooks and dropping off my laptop and clearing my desktop stuff. I haven't been into the office for months and everything was exactly as it was when I left except for the main desk calendar. 9 years all over in 45 minutes of dropping off the equipment and turning in my ID to my supervisor's office in the mail slot. And the Upack POD that was supposed to be at my apartment between 8a and noon came while I was at the office at 3pm. Luckily the wife was home and basically pointed where she wanted it parked. Never really had anxiety before but shit is getting real and so is my blood pressure.

During our 2-month semi-shutdown, our boss rifled through everyone's desks and 'cleaned' them.
I've known she does this when people go on vacation, so I always lock up my desk...but she has keys. At least it makes it a bit more blatant if she requisitions the keys to snoop through my mess.

It's actually not totally impossible--small residential colleges without frats have an outside chance at it, plus watching the parade of institutions that opened for a week and then sent everyone home may have convinced students who are just arriving to not be stupid because man, I can tell you that a lot of them do NOT want to be home with the rents any more, even if they're being kept locked in cinderblock dorm cells. We'll see.

We sealed up the house on Friday to keep the smoke particles down in the house. I installed a few furnace filters on box fans to help the air filters out. It’s wild, they were noticeably grey 24 hours later. Air quality seems better inside with them though.

It sounds like our big onshore push didn't happen, so we are stuck with smoke for another few days at least. This sucks. I just want to get out of the house without my eyes burning 5 minutes later.
I went to pick up dinner the other night and saw some jackhole jogging. Do you think heavily breathing in Beijing style air is going to do less damage than skipping a day of jogging? I am betting no.

Maybe he was a smoker who was trying to quit and discovered that jogging in Oregon's second hand hotboxing was even better than a pack of Marlboros.

So more adventures in moving.... Packed up the Upack pod thing over labor day weekend and they came and picked it up Tuesday after the holiday. Guy pulled up the forklift, picked it up and off he went. Got a text two days later with the bill, paid it and the pod is now in Nebraska due into Denver tomorrow. It'll sit in storage for a month before we figure out wtf to do with all of it. Skip ahead to today, I booked a truck with Budget. Head down to the place only to find out they have no trucks and I should have received a rescheduling call. Thank god for my wife because I was in full meltdown mode because I had a pretty strict schedule in my head and it fucks with my autism-lite. I get on the phone to switch my reservation over to another Budget down the highway and got pushed around to 2 people then they dropped my call. Wife called and also got bounced. She called back and went straight to the supervisor and basically gave her the option of fixing the reservation and giving us a discount or cancelling it altogether and then getting on her social networks and giving them the flamethrower treatment. Soooo, after cancelling, we went literally across the street and got a Uhaul - slightly more expensive, slightly bigger truck, but we were in and out of there in 30 minutes with a truck and dolly. Got 60% of the apartment packed and have all day tomorrow to finish it out and sweep and mop. I have come to realize I will never do this again. I used to be able to toss my life in the back of a small moving truck and go... but somewhere along the way I accumulated a wife and soooo much shit. Definitely going to do a little culling out in Denver starting with all the crap in the truck we do really need. Next on my list will be looking up divorce lawyers, just in case Outside of all that trauma, we hit he road Wednesday morning and going to make it a two stop trip and get into Denver Friday mid morning. Hope to get truck unpacked by evening and return the truck Saturday morning and be in unpack/cull mode. (and yes, the frogs are packed in their tote and the fish are in their buckets)

We definitely realized after the last move that we have one, and only one, left in us for retirement. So I've decided that every single year we're getting rid of shit that is not going with us--I am not going to try to make a giant fire sale decision about the stuff that followed us from the last house. Ten years and we'd better be in "this is the big last move" mode, assuming that the world doesn't fucking explode in the meantime.
