30ish minutes north of the airport, towards Des Moines.
The honeycrisps here in North Carolina have been terrible so far this year.

I managed to get a peck of decent apples, but not the amazing monsters of a few years back. My trees produced nada this year, though they're getting big and I was in the process of expanding the fencing before I couldn't walk.

The sports doc refused to see me, threw a temper tantrum about me going around behind the initial ortho's back (eh, second opinion is pretty standard, yeah?). Went back for my 1st follow up, was encouraged when I was put directly in the casting room (which looked like a scene from Saw). But then he said he wanted that cast to stay and not to walk on the foot for another month. I talked him down to two weeks.
Maybe he realized you'd be pushing it and purposefully intends to keep you off your feet. You are stubborn, after all.

YOU DON'T KNOW ME But yes, you know me and I agree that's why he did it.Furi, I told him I didn't take pain meds after the first day. Just a little ibuprofin at the end of longer days, and even that is more about the swelling than pain. My pain threshold > my nausea threshold. I don't see how people take those pain meds for fun, yuck.

I should get back to nature, too. You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer. Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached. Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

I'm so, so sorry about your friend, Engels. Good luck to him. Thanks, it has bummed me out all day, but I should say that TB is not a friend, he's just an internet personality that I've watched review games on youtube and come to like in my bored hours at work.

Well, to put out a more personal fuck cancer story, I was planning on going to a medical benefit for an old friend from back in the day who had lung cancer. He didn't make it to the weekend.
Weird thing is, at 45 I've lost the 3 kids I used to hang out with (including my best friend and singer). AIDs, suicide and cancer. What the fuck. I should write a country song.

My old boss who tried to sue me for leaving dropped dead of cancer last week. Funeral is tomorrow. Normally, I wouldn't give a fuck, but she leaves behind two lovely kids around Elena's age.
Cancer needs to get cured.

I feel you. Of my childhood group, we've lost two of the five, and almost lost one of the remaining to cancer.

At 44, I'm starting to see the first creeping signs of the mortality of my human friends. One of my best friends, whose also my boss at work and who I've known for almost 25 years, had to bury his dad last month from a heart attack. I'd actually met his dad a couple of times so I went to the funeral. Along with recognizing that my physical health has shifted from the "nothing wrong's" to "here's the chronic shit you will need to live with until you fucking die," it all kind of sucks monkey ass.
Also, fuck Comcast. Hopefully within the next month, I'll be switching to fiber for both Internet and TV thanks to regional wireless provider Cspire now building out fiber to the home offerings for select neighborhoods/cities in the state. Comcast can take its shitty Internet, buggy DVR tech and ass-raping customer service and shove it into its collective dickholes.

Nope. Welcome to life outside one of the big 20 metro areas in the US. It's Time Warner, Cincinnati Bell or nothing in Cincinnati. Since the wife won't cut the cord and Cinci Bell is DSL in my area (Very limited Fiber availability) and a joke it's TW or nothing. Woo! Weird thing is, at 45 I've lost the 3 kids I used to hang out with (including my best friend and singer). AIDs, suicide and cancer. What the fuck. I should write a country song.
I feel you. Of my childhood group, we've lost two of the five, and almost lost one of the remaining to cancer. I feel like the outlier here. I've been losing people since I was a senior in High School. Popular kid senior year, dead to stupidity in a parking lot. A year later a kid I knew very well, dead to an impact with a tree. Grandfather dead before I was 20. 6 of my good friends in a horrible accident while in College, one lost an eye one lost his legs the rest with injuries from Coma to a broken back and removed spleen. Grandmother dead 9 months after my daughter was born. Then a brief respite from anyone dead where Dad contracted cancer followed by my other Grandfather. They lived for a few years but then grandad died in the summer, we had my dad's 65th birthday 3 months later and he died 3 months after that. 5 months later and my mother in law had a sudden tearing of the aorta and died. Then the wife's step-mom died a year later. Brother's best friend in Cali just didn't wake up one day and he'd just turned 34. Nephew's good friend was killed standing on the median of the highway because mom thought staying in the car "wasn't safe" after an accident. A car didn't see the stopped vehicles, went off the road and hit one of the posts holding the wire barrier. Wire snapped and killed the 12 year old girl a few hundred yards away. Random 'fell over and died' from acquaintances from childhoodor friends of the family since then. So yeah, I'm used to the whole death thing. It happens; We're mortal. Hug your loved ones. Shit this got dark.

Oh, I have, too. I'm not counting older family members (lost my grandmothers when I was a kid, grandfather when I was 30). First one I remember losing was our first bassist when I was 16. Kid driving missed a turn and they hit some trees at a tremendous speed. Most people shit on the kid driving (kid in the back sued the driver and used the money to start selling cocaine...), but I maintained that it could've been any of us, we all drove drunk and high back then. But yeah, my band didn't really go in for covers but we always played Fade to Black for him. Wounded list is even longer, our old keyboardist lost his thumb and is now republican, the poor bastard.

Since the wife won't cut the cord and Cinci Bell is DSL in my area (Very limited Fiber availability) and a joke it's TW or nothing. Woo! And you can count yourself lucky. I'm not even living that far in the sticks, maybe about one mile outside the local DSL limit, but if I want to make someone laugh and laugh all I have to do is call the cable company and ask when they are going to run a line out here... I'm subsisting on a hybrid satellite and EVDO setup. Yes, I said EVDO -- we don't even have 4G coverage yet (and I have to boost the 3G). And yeah, one of the problems with living on is that you get to watch everyone else die. Hell, it's getting so I don't even want to get a new *dog* anymore.

It's not that I haven't lost people that were close or that I knew. That's been happening since I was a wee one. I don't even want to count. I'm talking specifically my group of friends from childhood. People who hung out and did everything together for years, and are my peers.

I solved that problem by having no friends and cutting off most contact with people I used to know who I had falling outs with. Still strange to see people dropping dead of heart problems or succumbing to cancer in their mid 30's, especially those I used to know. A college guy who I worked with for 6 years and was close to died earlier this summer: drank himself to death at 36. That was especially hard.

I've felt the same way. Yet in the end, I've never regretted getting a dog. Even the loud, farting, ridiculous beagle I own now who is currently trying to bury a treat under a pile of laundry I'm about to sort.
