Awesome. Parents getting older does suck. Every time my son gets a simple cold, the in-laws end up with multiple infections, bronchitis and whatever. My mom's having surgery soon to correct her recent surgery. My dad seems ok though.

You guys have convinced me. I now refuse to get any older.
Thanks for the motivation.

Shaving is starting to really wreck my face. That's pushing me toward not shaving. Which makes the eventual shaving that much worse. YAY.
My beard looks terrible anyhow. Looks great for a week or two and then I just look like some teenager that went into a coma for a few months.
Use a safety razor (the sort with old-fashioned removable blades), decent shaving soap with a brush (not out of a can) and you will get better, kinder shaves for a fraction of the cost of the typical Gillette TurboMach12FighterJet system blades.

Right now I'm using an electric face-rape special, just mostly because I hate shaving.

I shave my head and face once or twice a week, tops. It is time consuming and (literally) irritating to do it more often.

I hated shaving, but the safety razor/straight razor, shaving soap and brush was the best of the bad options. I currently have a lumberbeard going on, may trim it down though. As for broken knees, they suck for ages while healing, then for the next 27 years every winter and major weather change. Broken collarbone was bad, knees were way way worse.

Shaving is starting to really wreck my face.
What are you using to shave (i.e. type of blade, cream/soap, etc.)?

God I can't wait until the goddamned beards go out of style. They look fucking disgusting.
In happier news, Mom is out of surgery and headed home soon.
Good to hear about your mom. I will let your beard-ism slide because of your delicate emotional state.

I grow out a beard every winter. I don't really concern myself with fads because eventually everything becomes cool or stupid.

I use some fancy electric thing. I literally cannot grow a beard.
I've tried razors myself (the multi-blade nonsense). I also went and got a professional shave recently...that did not work out well.
Apparently my face likes to bleed - I didn't actually feel much of anything during the shave, but I swear it took a good 30 minutes for me to stop bleeding from a bunch of tiny cuts.
My solution is electrics, and I shave every other day - any more and the hair is just too short and I have to dig in to get at it.

Didn't we used to have a shaving thread?
Anyway, since we're telling stories about bleeding faces, I got a professional straight-razor shave once and it was definitely the smoothest shave I've ever had, but the next day my whole face and neck was red and puffy. Lasted for a few days. Don't know if it was irritation from the razor itself or from the aftershave or what, but I haven't cared to repeat the process to try to debug it. Sticking to my electric, thanks. After a couple of decades my face is pretty well acclimated to it.

(to Strazos) Sounds like a shitty barber, but hey who knows.
When I don't use a straight razor, because I'm being lazy, I use a basic 2-blade Gillette. As long as you only do two passes (4 passes of a razor total) it usually doesn't get irritated. I only have to shave my neck, and use a trimmer to keep the beard trim, so YMMV.

I use this: And I use Cremo shave cream. It's awesome. Men are allowed to use it, too. Don't you guys already have an entire thread all about your strange shaving utensils?

I decided to see if I could grow a beard once, so I stopped shaving as an experiment. That was 5 years ago and I still have no facial hair other than a few long thin white ones. It's kind of awesome. I also stopped cutting my hair 8 years ago minus a once yearly trim of split ends and that's been pretty cool too.

I shave my entire head every single morning. Well, not eyebrows and eyelashes. Face and head. I figure that based on pure square footage, that might make me shavemaster general around here. Anyway, what I've learned is that electrics are both better and probably cheaper in the long run. But it matters a great deal that you get a good one. And expensive does not always mean good. The most important part of the razor is the cutting edge itself and its ability to stay sharp. Obvious, of course, but it doesn't seemed to always be linked to the price of the razor. The best one I have ever used happens to also be the second cheapest I've ever used. The most expensive one I ever bought was also the worst (NEVER buy a foil shaver - I can't believe there is still a market for these things).
Also, clean that motherfucker all the time. Don't lie. You know you aren't.

It is a Remington 5150, but the trick is that I got a version with these "Black Diamond" heads, which now no longer seem to be available on that model (you can get them as replacements or on other models). Now it is Titanium heads...I have no experience with them, but they aren't the same. The rest of the razor is pretty cheap quality. I am forced to assume that it is these Black Diamond blades that are what make the razor good. Definitely better than all of the Phillips ands Panasonices I've ever had.

Nope, it's nothing new, it's the Same Fucking Problem that has plagued this shit since the outset.
Microsoft have no fucking strategy for User Amalgamation and because they don't, shit just gets worse.
Also, you need a live account on a fucking phone or a fucking surface, so rather than the problem getting just little worse every day, it gets FUCKLOAD worse.
Ahem.

Using a Braun electric. I'd recommend it to anyone that I liked. Had a Remington years ago, then blades. This is a razor that I'll use to get cleaned up for my funeral.

Ah, I see where you're coming at it now. Yeah, the live account on the Surface thing has really fucked with us and we've only got 6-8 running around and 0 windows phones. (iPhone or Samsung only here) I can't imagine larger organization's fucking headaches.

Google ain't no party either. We've been using it internally to collaborate on new policies and I enabled access logging, because policies. We hit a phase where we want to web publish, which is cool and easy and yada; but since I turned on access logging they've hidden the feature to turn it off somewhere new in their shiny new interface where they've buried a ton of stuff. Now the public has to click through 'the sysadmin is totally spying on your pc and watching your porn' message google pops up. I spent maybe fifteen minutes digging (I thought search was their thing!) before deciding it will be entertaining to see the paranoids lose it.
Also, granularity isn't a strong point: why is access logging's skirt draped over a non-editable web published document? Ye gods.
At some point can we as a tech community come up with a decent goddamned user interface and stick with it, even for five years or so? I love it when new versions of stuff roll out and hide esoteric functions like 'print' and then have to support the tech-illiterate public. We've all developed a tolerance for this nonsense so it's kind of a blind spot, but getting a regular outside perspective is interesting. My favorite quote was 'It's like changing where the speedometer is each model year...this year it's in the glove box!'
Anyway, it's fun that beards are in fashion right now. I have 20-somethings hitting on me.

My beard is almost a year old now and due to being sick last weekend it *almost* got shaved off. I figure for Movember this year I am totally going to cheat and start the month with a badass year old moustache.

They keep calling me an integration engineer. I'm just a user in the Microsoft arena, but I work for the largest IT company in the world. We'd rather serve out pre-baked images than outsource this to MS, it seems. Of course, we have our own cloud products which are no doubt far, far better.

400-500 AIX boxes. Still don't work for IBM (they are smaller than us, esp with the Lenovo split), and now I'm stuck doing RHEL hardware refreshes. Got stuck with refreshing a set of VCS/VxVM clusters and I don't know anything about that stuff. Fun times.
