Kind of like my bosses, all users really.

Yup.  I wish I had a dollar for every time I've been asked, "why won't it do what I want it to instead of THAT every time?!"

I lost my incredulous look. I can't fathom tech illiterate 20 and early 30-somethings.

I should have, but that was the last major thing so for the effort it'd take to find a new guy I figured it'd be easier to just do the rest of the legwork myself if it came to that.  Which I am now doing, having given him his final chance to add value to the proceedings.   awesome, for real

I'm tired of contractors in general (heh). Every single one I've ever hired needs to be babysat or he will fuck something up. A guy only has so much personal time to burn on these manbabies.

Had a preliminary phone interview today that willl hopefully transition to a face to face formal interview. I have no idea how it went. I hate doing these things on the phone. I'll find out in a week I guess.

Of course, if they said they'd get back to you in a week, you may have better than a 25% of them actually doing just that.

The lesson I've learned from this whole ordeal (along with many other people echoing your sentiments above) is that there's no point in hiring a general contractor, since as far as I can tell the job he's supposed to be doing (coordinating different subs, dealing with the city, double-checking the work, etc) is all the stuff that I'm doing anyway.  "Good" contractors who can do their jobs without babysitting seem to be mythical beasts, at least when it comes to doing work on single-family homes.

Yes. If they were any good they'd be running a commercial firm or rolling out for bigger builders. The Tommy Silvas of the world are few, far between and not working in the homes of those of us not in the 2-5%

Welp, my wife managed to get into a low-key accident some six hundred miles from home. She's supposed to drive home Thursday. So while she's waiting for the cops to arrive, she got ahold of our insurance company and the local dealership, found the body shop they use was about 5 miles away, and the cops cleared her to drive there (with escort).

Minor damage, really. Sub-10 mph collision, the wife's fault, but it looks like the other car managed to smack her right above the driver's side front wheel. F150 v Elantra.

She calls up, all paranoid about axle damage (kinda hard with a FWD car, as I told her) because the tire's bent inward maybe 5 degrees.

Bodyshop guy told her he'd call mid-morning with what was wrong, whether he could get the parts and get her on her way by Thursday. (This is just to get it driveable, not repair bodywork. A 600 drive with a screwed up wheel is not gonna happen). I'm guessing since she's at the local Hyundai dealership's preferred bodyshop, and that I'm guessing the damage ranges somewhere between 'fucked up the alignment' to 'bent a tie rod', that I'm pretty sure they can acquire the parts and get it fixed before Thursday afternoon at closing time.

It's going to be a GIANT PITA otherwise.

Interestingly, this principle applies to IT as well as construction.

ALL depends on how new the car is and how common for regular wear parts vs the "wow, we haven't seen someone fuck this up before..." type parts...

I suppose. They told me they are doing prelim phone interviews then setting up dates for face to face ones after the weekend. The headhunter/recruiter told me this was how things were going to go before I did the phone interview.

2011 Elantra, and I'd be really shocked if it was more than a whacked alignment. I'll find out tomorrow. Car wrecks in foreign cities are a pain in the ass. (Well, if it's your car)

So yeah, my wife will be making a round trip next week or the week after. She really fucked up that wheel. 1700 not counting body damage. They could fix it (not the bodywork) in time for her to drive home tomorrow, but the insurance people need to inspect it before work gets done, and Del Rio literally is nowhere Texas.

We just had a big old thunderstorm.  The dog hid in the bathroom, one cat hid in the basement and the other cat, Gila Lobster and parrot lounged around in the next room because they don't give a shit about anything.  I have to say, though, some of the thunder and lightening was very, very frightening.

Depends on how far south.  We have Kitty Hawk plans and not cancelling.  Further south?  Would postpone.

If we were staying at normal cottage one half block from ocean I would have postponed.

Anyway, good luck!

Nope, and no risk of any with this rain.  Fairly light and gentle for once.  Still sick of it.

Cayman gets really stressed out at big storms.  Normal rain he doesn't care about but thunder and lightning he starts panting and pacing a lot.  And with the assorted yahoos around lighting off fireworks at all hours (Why yes!  I did want to listen to M80s go off at 1am on a work night!) he's a bit jumpy in the evenings.  Hope your scaredy dog and cat are fine now.

You mean the type of rain or just because it's raining?  Realizing it won't settle your nerves but wanting you to be aware since tornadoes are apparently a new thing to you: they can and do happen on rainstorms it's just not common.  Better informed is better prepared.

Oh, tornadoes aren't new to me, I grew up in Southern Illinois where the chances of one showing up was more common.  Just not used to the chances of them so far north (or what seems to be so far north)

I mean that the rain wasn't a thunderstorm.  It was just a gentle summer rain coming down instead of a thunderstorm of clashing thunder and lightning.
