So.....
Is anyone else not allowed to give blood anymore?
They found out about the hookers, eh? The criteria for who can donate has become more stringent over the years (at least in the US) as we learn more about the variety of blood borne diseases that are transmitable through receiving donated blood. E.g. UK people (of a certain criteria) are now excluded from donating in the US because of Mad Cow's disease.

I've never been able to give blood, hooray genetics.
Ditto, except I'm not sure if Capillary problems are genetic. (Actually, I'm sure they aren't.)

I've got thalassemia minor, so does the old man, and it stops either of us from ever giving blood.
It also leads to hilarious blood test results if you forget to tell your doctor you have it.

There is a 50-50 chance I have a genetic blood disorder (Factor V Leiden) that makes my blood clot too much. So if I were to have major surgery, there is a good chance I would throw blood clots like crazy. My father had hernia surgery without knowing he had the disorder, and had a pretty fucking bad stroke from it (he was in a coma for 3 or 4 months).
I haven't gotten tested for it, why ruin the surprise?!

Basically, I tested positive for Hep B antibodies, so the blood bank sent me a giant letter to inform me that I was on the "suspect donor" list, and not to bother coming back.

When I was a kid I went to a TGIFridays with my parents and a bunch of people from the company they worked at (Laredol). Ended up having to get a Hep shot in the ass a week later. NEVER BEEN BACK.

I have those too because I was vaccinated against hep A and B years ago.

I have those too because I was vaccinated against hep A and B years ago. I guess there are two different antibody tests: one where you test positive for being vaccinated, and one where you test postive for being exposed to the virus. I tested positive for the bad one. Anyone want to share a needle?

What is your gimmick though?
You need a gimmick just as much as you need a good dish. ;)
I have friend who should try out for that... Then again, his gimmick of "megalomaniacal, abusive asshole" has pretty much been monopolized by Gordon Ramsay for the time being.
The gimmick is the thing that's tying me up right now. My "point of view" is "I grew up poor, learned how to cook out of necessity, am no longer poor, but am still chintzy". The Frugal Gourmet is ready for a remake, right? I'll throw in a monkey punch to the kidney, too, just to see him piss his pants. Then I'll say, "that was off the hook!"

I can give blood, but not plasma. I'm fine up until the part where they try to shove my centrifuged blood cells back into my vein.

I used to give plasma a lot. The tingle of the anticoagulant was always fun, but I do hate the larger bore needles. I think I still have scars from the frequency that I gave plasma during med school. As someone that used to work in peds heme-onc, I also encourage many of you to become bone marrow donors. Yes, it hurts like hell... but two days of pain is well worth saving the life of a child.

Too much time in the UK, so I am off the list.
Had to lie on my son's blood cord bank application, but they tested for everything (except prions, I guess) and all three of us came up clean. Hooray for no HIV and other assorted diseases.

Pussy. I view it that my blood knows where it belongs. It's happy in my veins, and I'm content to let it stay there.

Cable installers are worse than cable technical support personnel.
Yes. When I was running some electrical, I took the opportunity to re-route the cable lines they had drilled through my wall and run around the outside of the house, fucking up a window sill and two baseboards. The installer, a subcontractor of course, was impressed. My old neighbor was an official installer and gave me the hardware to do it, so I had a nice splitter mounted in a downward-pointing plate, which the contractor didn't even have yet :). Good luck, VL. I hope you win so we can cheer you on! I guess I'm the only person in the world that likes Guy. Sure, his little sayings are stupid, but I like him anyway. Annoys the shit out of my fiancee, so now I keep saying "THAT'S SO MONEY" when I eat. Your gimmick should be that you're a warrior biologist woman who knows the praying mantis form! Maybe a survivorman kind of vibe, where you go into the wild and harvest yummy stuff.

Happiness is breaking your company provided securID authenticator and having to wait for a new one to come in via FedEx.
Sadness is misplacing your blizzard-vasco authenticator somewhere in your couch.

His public career came to an end when two of his male assistant chefs brought charges of sexual harassment against him. Shortly thereafter, in 1998, several men alleged that he had sexually assaulted them in the 1970s, when they worked for him.[3] Smith denied the accusations. He was taken off the air shortly afterward. Though he was never charged with a crime, he settled with the plaintiffs out of court, and never returned to the airwaves.[4] From Jeff Smith (the frugal gourmet) wikipedia entry.

Could be worse, I have ingested one container of Ben & Jerry's New York Super Fudge Chunk, one container of Haggen Daaz Mint Chip and two bags of buffalo blue potato chips in the past three days.

My fiancee was trying to be thoughtful and bought the next book in the series I'm reading. Then she put it in a nice basket filled with goddamned Reese's cups. The same day a coworker brought in a big sack of Reese's cups. I don't have a sweet tooth and I'm not tempted by all these snacks that float through the office, don't keep snacks in the house...but Reese's cups are my total weakness. I've eaten about a gajillion in the last couple days.
Damn you sweet and salty perfection. Damn you.

Reese's cups are the only non-godiva/valrhona chocolate I like.
They come in bags with even smaller bags inside now, you know.
