This year's winner is a coworker in Manilla who posted a happy birthday via Facebook yesterday afternoon at 4pm my time.

Moving to Austin on Friday to attend UT. I have never even visited the town. If any of our crew residing in the area would care to provide any insights here or via PM I would be much obliged. To start: Schild, what is the best magic/gaming shop in town? My friend introduced me recently and I wish more.

Or if you are feeling friendly, I would love to meet some new people, I might even have a few bucks for beer, or your food of choice.

Why does this board seem very Texas centric, and seemingly is becoming moreso as time goes on?

If you can't easily find fun in Austin, something's wrong with you.   awesome, for real

I think the order is:  Texas, Ohio, California, Chicago and Atlanta being close if not tied.

They make minivans.. and the women and latter categories have a venn diagram that overlaps by about 99%.  Every single mom would be better-served driving a minivan except, "I don't want that image, I'm not OLD."   Lady, you're a mom; You're old by default.   Get over it, high school was 20 fucking years ago, drive the goddamn minivan.

Who drives SUVs these days except women who don't want the minivan image, outside of mountain drivers?

I love my minivan, but I've been driving station wagons since I t-boned a stop sign runner in an old VW bug when I was in my late 20s and man, was I sore for weeks after that. Decided then to never drive a little car again, so went to a heavy old Volvo wagon, replaced that with another, then got the minivan.

Looking toward my next "new" car, I like the new Ford Flex. They call it a cross-over but it's a station wagon. (Or as my friend says, a Coleman cooler on wheels).

Even before hauling kids, I liked having a lot of room on trips.

I don't understand people buy vehicles to fit a self-image any more than I understand people who buy a hammer to fit a self-image. It's a tool.

I've had two absolute rules in life: never work in food service and never buy a minivan.

My wife got a used R series Mercedes because she's scared of being a minivan mom.  I wish like fuck we would have gotten a Honda minivan.  They're awesome.  Of course a used R series was significantly cheaper to buy.......

Dragon's Lair on Burnet will be your best bet for CCG/board games/table-top. Not too far from there is Austin Books & Comics on Lamar which is an amazing comic shop but not so much in gaming.

MuffinMan answered the question.

There is a fair chance people from f13 have met me but I don't know they've met them. I'm at DLair on most Fridays (Standard) and Tuesdays (Draft), and Juniors down south (which is like a grungy 80s comic book store) on Sundays (legacy) and Mondays (standard).

Rag, this friday is Grand Prix Austin. If you find time, hit up the convention hall. There will be major side events all weekend.

Lots of folks around here in this conservative and very egocentric city.  There were two posts just following yours that reinforce it's not just a local thing, too.

Even at $3.50 a gallon I work with a guy who won't sell his H2 because of the image. He lives in a suburb closer to the CBD than I do so it's PURE ego.

Yes, yes it is. My husband drives one these days (E something? SomethingE?). But boy, it sure handles better in the rain than my minivan or our old Volvo wagon.

Hmm.  There's a Dragon's Lair down here in San Antonio.  I was also kind of hoping there would be something more exotic in Austin.

Dragon's Lair is pretty extensive to me, at least for my needs. Didn't know they had other stores.

I may have to check out this Junior's place though, if just to taunt schild. The comic shop nearest to me in S Austin sucks and I'm way too lazy to drive all the way to Austin Books & Comics or Dragon's Lair.

There are scads of shitty comic book shops here in SA.  We DO, however, have an official Games Workshop store now, so that's exciting.  It's about 20 feet by 10 feet, but it's the real deal.

Based on that square footage, they should be insuring the store for at least $16 million.   Ohhhhh, I see.

No, no, no.  They don't carry lead.  It's only the plastic miniatures so it should be maybe $8 million.

The GW store here (official postage stamp sized one) is open 4 days a week, for 6 hours a day if you're lucky. They tend to just close for the day at 4pm if no one's there, after opening after 2pm. Made it damn hard to try and buy someone a xmas gift. So they got booze instead.
