This is interesting.  Apparently Samuel L. Jackson is the highest grossing actor of all time.  I find this odd on a lot of levels, because sure he's been in some hits but I'm not sure he's been in more than some other actors.

That guy is in a crapload of movies.

If you look closely I bet you can spot him as an extra in most everything you see.

When we think of "highest grossing actor" we think of lead actor...  you know, the tent pole that the entire marketing is based around including the months of pressers/showing up on all the talk shows.  Jackson is largely a supporting actor, but off the top of my head you throw in all the Marvel movies, the Star Wars prequels, every one of Tarantino's movies (even Bastards he had a narration credit), Jurassic Park, etc. it's up there.

Lead actor types tend to be in one or two big movies every couple of years, since they have to carry the marketing burden, and they also tend to have a shelf life.

Cool bit/supporting/character actors can show up all over.  Think how widespread a guy like Steve Buscemi was (it feels like he was in every movie released between 1993 and 2000 from blockbusters to tiny indy flicks), or Paul Giamatti, or Ian McKellan and Christopher Lee the last few years (instant gravitas, add one dash of Lee or McKellan).

He'll also take just about any role he's offered, Michael Caine is another one of those types. Harry Dean Stanton also comes to mind.

The man has 137 roles to his IMDB credit, the bulk of which are films.  Compare that to the guys on the highest-paid actor list of 2010-2011

The guy on that list with the most credits is Ben Stiller at 103, most of which are bit TV roles or shorts.  Going for actual Films it's Downey at 75 with only Ally McBeal and SNL as TV credits.  But we all know he wasn't on big films for a number of years because of his problems.  From 2007 back to 1992 there's a looot of filler work.  Meanwhile Jackson, while having a number of "what movie was that?" roles still has a lot more recognizable films, even if they weren't box office record makers.

Yeah, I can see SLJ being the highest grossing actor with stats like that.

From a Wikipedia quick gander, 8 movies he was credited in made the following:

Captain America: $366million
Thor: $448million
Iron Man 2: $624million
Iron Man: $585million
Revenge of the Sith: $849million
The Incredibiles: $631million
Attack of the Clones: $649million
Phantom Menace: $924million

He was in a lot of other movies that made over 100million too.

Are you kidding me? The guy made a mother fucking movie about mother fucking snakes on a mother fucking plane. And it didn't kill his career. Of course he is the highest grossing actor in Hollywood. He is an unstoppable force of nature and bad assness!

The price of 3d and IMAX tickets has really fucked the top 50 list.  A normal evening ticket around here is $10 adults 7.50 seniors/ children.  3d is 14.50/11.50/13.50 and IMAX is 16.50/ 13.50/15.50.   Since most of those movies on the list released a 3d and IMAX version, that means the box office gross is inflated by somewhere between 15% to 65%.  Let's just call it 35% for kicks.

That's before accounting for the whole, "Shit, tickets are $10 now vs. when they were $7 only 10 years ago." factor.

Oh.. you're also looking at the worldwide gross.

I knew I should've dumped my fiancee and rode your coat-tails to greatness! Congrats, Iain.

Anyone in the upstate NY area want a couple Warren Haynes early entry tickets (half hour before general admission) for the Nov 17th show in Geneva NY? We're going to see Chris Cornell at the Egg that night. Warren Haynes is really good, though. It was a tough decision.

If it wasn't Cornell's Songbook acoustic tour, there would be no contest, Haynes wins. If it was Haynes acoustic, it would be a tight call. I really struggled with this one, but ultimately it boils down to seeing Cornell perform Call Me a Dog acoustic is on my life list, and we've seen Haynes with the Allmans a bunch of times.

Ugh, so sorry.

The cosmic counterforce to Iain's promotion, no doubt.  It's his fault!

I'm still walking on air this week since spouse started working again last week after 6 months of being unemployed (after being laid off from a company he worked for, for 21 years - actually, it wasn't the same company since it was bought by another company a few years ago.  It wasn't anything like the old company.  I hope they go down in flames, too, the bastards.)  Anyway, new job seems awesome, even though the office is an hour and a half away.  Least it doesn't snow here.

That sucks.  Are you just finding out about it now?  Usually, those sorts of decisions are made well before the FY on military contracts.  Did you work directly for the AF as a GS or for a subcontractor?

Yep, Found out this AM. Once again, told really suddenly. I have till the 14th to charge to the contract. I worked for a Subcontractor. I have no idea why, so far after the renegotiation, its being cut now. It was a 5 year renew.

Sorry to hear it, BW.  Being in that position always sucks.

What's a good way to learn CAD from scratch?

Hahahahaha.  I point and laugh!

Anyway, get a book, read it and find a copy to play around on.   If you're learning AutoCAD (and if you aren't WHY?)  Paul Aubin's Mastery series are all very good.  Find version 2008 or later as that has most of the newest features.  2011 or 2012 added some nice efficiency tools but nothing you NEED to learn.

What exactly are you needing to learn CAD for?

I'm really impressed with Zune Pass. I read this post, and now have albums from Chris Cornell and Warren Hayes downloading.

Pillow of Your Bones off his Euphoria Morning album is one of my favorite songs EVER.  The one that got airplay - Can't Change Me - is also fantastic.   I haven't checked out his other albums and now it's off to Spotify to do so.
