I'd rather it was cold than hot. You can heat up easier than cooling off and, frankly, I love burning shit.
Now, Rain. Rain is something I've had fucking ENOUGH of. It's pished it down for the past two weeks and I have trees to cut.

Texas isn't so bad, really. Houston and Dallas are like Los Angeles in atmosphere and size. South by the border it gets a little strange.
And I'm with you, Ironwood- it gets really fucking hot down here but the wife won't let us leave. I'd probably be in New England somewhere if it were up to me, in Maine or Vermont or New Hampshire. But you gets what you gets sometimes.

Ironwood in Texas. I'd pay good money for a video stream of the first job interview.
How much is good money ? At this stage, I might do it.

Have to disagree. When you're in NYC or LA you feel like you're on the leading edge of fashion, music, and the arts. Houston and Dallas... not so much. Austin is more progressive than both Houston and Dallas.

Dallas and Houston are very cosmopolitan in the right areas. And it's all about boob jobs and hair, which is very Los Angeles. NYC is a totally different bird. Suburbs are suburbs, no matter where you are.

You are the first person I've ever known to use Houston, Dallas, and cosmopolitan in the same sentence. I don't mean to be ugly here, but when I think about going to a play, the ballet, a symphony, or a museum, Dallas and Houston never even occur to me. I think I've gotten spoiled.

Dallas and Houston are a lot better than many cities in the US. Unless you are talking about a Portland, San Francisco, NYC, Miami or Seattle most US cities are complete shit holes. Take Cincinnati, Cleveland and Detroit for example. Even Chicago can be kind of shitty in some ways, even though there is a lot to do. I would put Dallas and Houston up with Chicago on stuff to do and overall atmosphere.

That's Houston. (Pasadena technically, but it's close enough.) Houston also has oppressive humidity. It makes the heat much, much worse. Only those who live along the Gulf coast can understand how miserable it can get. Austin is Central Texas though. South Texas is Larado and Brownsville. Houston has a small but thriving arts community. Opera, symphony, ballet, several small theater companies. Downtown has seen a big push to make it upscale and not so dead after the 8-5 workday, too. It's not my thing, but it is present. We also have one of the best restaurant scenes in the nation.

I agree. I just said that it's nothing like the choices in LA. You're the one that compared it to LA. That wasn't me.

But I'd love to find some more local restaurants that are Houston local, not Texas local.

And I feel they are somewhat similar, after living in each for a while- particularly Dallas. The mentality of the people that live there is similar and there are similar choices when it comes to things to do and restaurants and culture. Just call it super diet LA and maybe you can stomach it better. I also felt like London was similar to LA in a lot of ways. They are both sprawling metropolises with lots of different cultural influences. You can find almost everything there.

Austin is a great city. I think most people on this board would really like it.
Austin is a beautiful oasis in the middle of a hell hole. This. The rest of Texas can go flushing itself down the anus of the universe.

Dallas has a great sports scene and a pretty solid performing arts scene, with a very good restaurant scene.
Houston, I'm not really a fan due to the sprawl. It's not a very pretty city at all.

Any specific type you're after? And Ironwood in Houston would be hilarious, just so we can film him uttering that line from that movie.

I'd take a local "best of", burger, ribs, thai, chinese, etc. Been trying to use Yelp!, but it's not as awesome in Houston for recommendations as it was in DC. The problem might be the sprawl, as it has to be SUPER good for me to drive 45 mins to get there. It did recommend Bubba's Burger Shack and Bel Air Broiler Burger, which are both awesome.

It's the sprawl, I would imagine. :) What sort of food are you looking for? I know a few decent places in Clear Lake, a few downtown, that sort of thing.

Nidda Thai. Westheimer, just west of Montrose, next to Erotic Cabaret and Radio Shack. Tell them Amy sent you. Nod when they ask "the tall blonde?" You're welcome. Mo Mong across the way is Asian fusion, but usually great. Their spring rolls are a meal unto themselves. Kim Son at the edge of downtown for Vietnamese with a huge menu. Barnaby's. Americana. There are a couple of locations, but I like the one on West Grey east of Montrose. Really good food. Sushi Rock on Morningside and Holcombe has gone back and forth, but worth a shot if you're in the area. Sushi and Thai. Did I mention Nidda? Go there. Now. I'll think of more later when I have time.

Totally mindboggling that they're remaking Spiderman already. Yeah, I know there's a thread for this and I said it in there, but the news 'Sheen cast as Uncle Ben' just set my wtf meter soaring.

More Thai : Thai Gourmet, Richmond between Hillcroft and Fountain View. Also Thai Cafe on Westheimer and Wilcrest. There's a ton of Thai places springing up all over town it seems... You've got Rudi Lechner's at Westheimer/Gessner for German, Blue (something) for Ethopian on Richmond just East of Gessner, Niko Niko's on Montrose just N of Westheimer for Greek. Wild Kitchen on Stella Link 3-ish blocks north of 610 South for Fish and Chips. Not sure about BBQ after Pappa's bought Luther's , but for a steak, try Lynn's Steakhouse on Dairy-Ashford just south of I-10. In a pinch, you'll also generally find good recommendations through The Houston Press. (edit : speeling n reedink r gud)

Honestly, you should save your fireworks viewing holidays for months with warmer weather anyway. What holiday is that, anyway, and why does it require explosives?
