All I had to hear was Iron Man back in stupid team, overall plotlines still make no sense or do not exist.  While the characters are in so many books at once that things dont add up and one has to wonder how the hell they have time for it all.  Same as it ever was.  Comic books were fun when I was a kid and didn't analyze the things that entertained me.  Now I fear if I picked any up I would end up like Haemish, spending a ton of money on things that I end up expressing loathing for if anyone asks me about them in a public or intellectual setting.

That is what my anime (and MMO I suppose) habit is for and I dont pay for any of the stuff that sucks because I check out every show before purchasing dvd's.  Plus I've moved on from men in spandex to giant robots and I think I'm a better person for it.

In the last few years of my comic-reading time, I was mostly reading a mix of Dark Horse stuff like Grendel, Hellboy, random 1-shots and miniseries that looked interesting, and a bunch of Vertigo titles, especially Hellblazer and then Preacher. I also liked Punisher for the close-to-realism that the series often had excepting when Spiderman, Wolvie, Cap or DD would pop their heads in. Gladstone's Disney comics were also good before they went to cheap butchers' paper for their covers, and at that point I decided if they didn't care about their comics anymore, neither would I. Which was a shame. I should look up what Don Rosa's been up to. Now and then there'd be a good Batman 1-off or 2-off worth getting.

Anyone reading that kind of thing? What state is that in these days? Is Frank Miller writing good comics or bad movies these days? Alan Moore?

My whole interest in comics was renewed a couple years ago by Preacher alone. Before that, I didn't look at them since I was about 12.

Then it died off again.

I "sample" things here and there though. But nothing really stands out to me like that did.

As far as Don Rosa goes, I'd check out last year's The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck if you haven't read it already.  The Conan stuff Dark Horse puts out is worth reading if you have any interest in Conan.  Warren Ellis does a lot of non-superhero stuff like Fell or Black Gas that might appeal to you.  Moore's most recent work was finishing up Lost Girls which... well it could probably be better described here.  Not generally something that would appeal to me but I don't find the idea as disturbing as some.  Frank Miller stuff reads like self-parody these days.  Vertigo doesn't have much of note going on right now.

I liked Planetary (but I can never find issues 14+ at the local stores  cry) and Priest's Black Panther. I don't think I bought a single comic in the 90's  tongue (in hindsight that can't be true, since I have some original issues of Sandman, somewhere heh)

Frank Miller is writing All Star Batman & Robin...badly. Very very badly. But then hes the goddamn Batman.

Alan Moore is finishing his pornographic graphic novel Lost Girls which should be released to a round of applause from the Conservatists. Read more about it here http://www.newsarama.com/TopShelf/LostGirls/MooreLG_01.html

And to answer the question I'm not reading much thats not from the Big 2 but if I had to pick some non-spandex titles I'd highly recommend Fables and Y the Last Man.

Oh and I know everyone hates him but Powers by Bendis is a cracking read, especially at the moment.

I don't hate him so much as I think he's better off sticking with his own creations rather than doing Marvel characters.

I woudln't say "hate".  He just irritates me.  But when he's working with a character who suits his style, like Spider-Man, he's excellent.

He just has a really hard time getting out of that style.

But let's not make the one thread about other comics actually about Bendis.

Not lately. His non-superhero stuff is good. His latest All-Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder, is crap, drawn by Jim Lee. The first issue was good, after that, it's Miller expressing his dislike for the Batman concept, and spending multiple pages with overlapping dialogue saying the same thing about Black Canary being a hottie before she kicks everyone's asses and disappears from the story. It's all that was bad about Dark Knight Strikes Back (DK2) with better art.

EDIT: Also, Planetary by Ellis and Cassady is fantastic. Invicible is pretty damn good take on the teen superhero thing too.

Skimmed through a Silver Surfer graphic novel a couple weeks ago on lunch hour.  One of the older ones with Thanos,  just prior to the infinity gauntlet crossover.  Good fun.

Also skimmed over some origin of Doc Ock thing that looks recent and might be some kind of reboot/reimaging (can't remember the name).  Doc Ock was a nerd and got picked on.  I put it down when the author had the jocks at MIT pick on college age Otto.  I mean....   Harvard or Yale I could believe a little bit of ribbing, but MIT?Huh

The bulk of the student population at MIT epitomizes nerd.

There are no jocks at MIT. Maybe ultimate frisbee "jocks." As someone who lives in Cambridge, nothing is less scary to me than MIT "jocks." MIT students picking on someone for being a nerd? Ha!

What was the SS graphic novel. Not Thanos Quest? (Which ruled)

I think it's due to wrap up in another couple issues.  Since there can be a long delay between issues I'd recommend that those interested in checking it out just wait for the final issues to be released and then read it all at once.

Wow. There's some good stuff in these old comics threads. This'll round out my hat trick for Necros on the day. This seemed like a good place to mention a random title or three that I picked up this week.

I just finished reading All*Star Superman #9 and it rocks. I really never dug on Superman at all until reading this series. Great art by Quitley and the writing is fun to read. That's usually the case with Morrison's stuff though. I also picked up The Boys #12 which is so-so for Ennis and Robertson and World of Warcraft #1 which I haven't gotten to yet.
I'm not expecting too much, but I took a chance hoping it will surprise me.

Dear Diary,
Jackpot!
