I wonder how long some of those sets are. I'd love to catch Buddy Guy, he's one of my personal Jesii. Moe usually puts on a good show, as does MM&W, G Love and Blues Traveler. Hopefully some of the better acts make it to moe.down, which is close to home.

I went to the first 2 Bonnaroo's. Sets are usually 1 hour for any side-stage and 1.5 hours for main-stage non-headliner. The headliners in the past have all usually done 2 2 hour sets depending on the band, neil young for example did the traditional 2 hour set + encores instead. Widespread panic and the other "jam-band" headliners do 2 sets usually 2 hours each. Then there's also the late night sets which can also run 3-4 hours long starting at midnight. The hard part for me the first 2 years was that bands I wanted to see would overlap at times since at any given time up to 4 different bands can be playing. If you go to http://www.bonnaroo.com/2005/ -> Artist LineUp -> Then click 2005 schedule you get an idea of how it's laid out.

If you aren't into crowds, hippies, good music, camping, drugs, and more good music then there's no reason to ever care. Oh, and did I mention hippies?

Dude, you didn't even have to mention hippies. It couldn't have been more obvious. Anything involving camping and festivals is ruined by those long haired freaks.

Sorry, I don't think I would ever care. Most of them I don't even know...I know Death Cab for Cutie is way overblown though.
Plus, camping...no thanks.

When I married my husband he had hair to his waist. My hair was not quite that long but I shaved the sides and dyed it bright red with gold tips. Our best man had a topknot and about 3 lbs. of metal in his face. Oh... and he was in a wheelchair, too. Of course, that was back in the olden days when many of you still had a voice that sounded like a squeaky door and were wondering what else you could do with your wonderful willy other than pee. If I could find that box with the wedding pics in it, I'd show you. Of course, if I could find that box Schild would have his copy of Suikoden II.

I'd pay good money to see:
Radiohead Elvis Costello & the Imposters Bela Fleck & the Flecktones Buddy Guy Ben Folds Dr. John Matisyah Steel Pulse Mike Gordon and Ramble Dove Dresden Dolls
But I'd rather see them all in clubs. The sound at festivals isn't optimal, neither is the view, and you have to find something to do during all the dull bands. Mini-festivals like the old Monsters of Rock (UK) are better value, because you've got a small number of acts that are typically all enjoyed by the same audience (plus they tend to be one day, hence no camping). Last "a little bit of everything" festival I went to was Reading Rock in 1983. There were a load of good bands there, but frankly it wasn't worthwhile to pay the money for substandard sets punctuated by boring shit that you had to sit through to keep a decent spot for an upcoming act. I had to watch The Enid live. Nobody should have to suffer The Enid.

Going to festivals for anything other than getting laid while on lsd in the middle of a few thousand people who are also there to get laid while on lsd is silly.

Obviously not. If one of my roommates didn't like Matisyahu I'd have no clue who he is either.

I counted four bands I liked on that list. Most of them I don't even know. However, I'm sure when the "festival" starts, I'll be able to smell it's attendees all the way down here in Atlanta.
PS - Jam bands suck.

Jam bands /can/ suck. Bands with strong song frameworks and changes that extend them into jams are what I enjoy. Bands like the Allman Brothers Band or Blues Traveler. There are a lot of weak wankery bands that pass themselves off as 'jam bands' to excuse their lack of structure, composition and arrangement. Most of the jam band scene imo.
One of my favorite modern reggae guys is a Jew, too. Must be something in the kosher water. King Django.
Signe - my hair used to be to my waist, late 80s, early 90s. It's past shoulder length again now, on it's way down again, along with my beard which I intend to go all Billy Gibbons with (ZZTop).
Hippies. The term has lost it's meaning, really. The first gen hippies were pretty stupid, so rabidly anti-government, anti-establishment that they got real ignorant.
Also, I have a disturbing love of Buddy Guy. One of the last surviving great blues masters.

I think I'm going to go this year despite all the hate =) This year actually seems to be more rock/southern rock than "jammy".
I'm looking forward to seeing Radiohead and Ben Folds quite a bit as I've been fans of both for a while but haven't seen either live yet.
I've seen a bunch of the other bands before but wouldn't mind seeing them again: Beck, Robert Randolph (gospel/blues on a slide steel guitar), G. Love, Nickel Creek, Blues Traveler, Rusted Root (back in the day).
A couple other bands are interesting. I've wanted to see My Morning Jacket for a while now and even more so when one of their CD's turned out to be rootkitted (is that a word) and they decided to just burn copies of their cd for anyone who asked and basically told Sony to Fuck off. What's Sony going to do? Start suing their musicians.
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah is also interesting as they've turned down offers from major labels and have decided to try the internet as a distrubutor and are relying on word of mouth promotion.
I have a morbid curiosity to go see Matisyahu.
Mike Doughty was the lead singer for Soul Coughing which was one of my favorite college bands.
Then there's a bunch of other stuff that will work nicely as filler.
P.S. Jam bands do not suck. One day you'll realize that most bands you could just pop a cd into your home stereo and hear the exact thing a band is going to play live. Jam bands give you a different experience every time you see them. Jam bands also defy boundaries more than the typical Phish sound you probably are used to. Check out Particle or The Roots or even a band like The Mars Volta or Flaming Lips who would fit into the scene. Hell Mars Volta played Bonnaroo last year and the Flips played 2 years ago.
Edit: Oh and I guess I can join the former "long-hair" club as well. I had hair about half way down my back. Now I shave it bald but the beard is back, at least for winter.

The only person on that list I'd pay to see would be Elvis Costello. If Radiohead were on fire, I wouldn't walk across the street to piss on them to put the fire out. Wank band extraordinaire there.
WAS the lead singer of Soul Coughing? They broke up? Shit.
Also, through my sophomore year in college, I had hair down to my shoulder blades.

I agree on Radiohead, they make me stabby not just because of the music, but because of their following who thinks the people who don't like them are philistines. On that list I like, Beck, Tom Petty, and Blues Traveler. The funny thing is I'd go see the geriatric Rolling Stones before I'd ever set foot in music festival campout scene.

Right, because you wouldn't find fans of other bands doing the same thing, or thinking that whole fairly unspecific 'categories' of music like reggae or jam bands all suck. But carry on, absolutely everybody that likes Radiohead is an elistist, pretentious music snob. What's your next shot?

But but but... They were in Harry Potter! How can you not love a band that was in a Harry Potter movie!!!! Edit: Oh yeah if anyone has a passing interest in hearing anything of these bands the www.bonnaroo.com site has a decent little jukebox playing a single song from most of the list.

I still go to one festival every year. But after I got married I must say that I dropped the tent, the sex and the lsd... and last year i had to skip one of four Mike Patton performances to go home and help with a sick kid. Yes, I'm probably as old as Signe. I never had long hair and I always hated the tents and the mud, I just couldn't afford anything else. One of the reasons for becoming a journalist was backstage access - not for the free ticket, but so I could exchange the portapotty with porcelain and the beer in plastic with Mojitos... that other people pay for. I onced listened to Motley Crüe with Pamela Anderson and Helena Christensen...
... we didn't talk and the music sucked.

But after I got married I must say that I dropped the tent, the sex and the lsd... Find a better wife.. one that likes lsd, and sex in public. and last year i had to skip one of four Mike Patton performances to go home and help with a sick kid. Jesus man, priorities. Kids come and go but a Mike Patton show is for life. Hell your new lsd taking fucking in public wife and you can make a new kid in 15 minutes flat if you work at it.. I onced listened to Motley Crüe with Pamela Anderson and Helena Christensen...
... we didn't talk and the music sucked.
I took acid and watched horror movies with Marylin Manson and Enigma from Jim Rose Circus Sideshow.. It was probably much more interesting..

Hanzii, that wasn't very nice.
Closest thing to this we get up here would be the Merrit Mountain Music Festival. Supposedly a hell of a great party, but its all Country music, so I wouldn't be caught within 100 miles of Merrit that weekend. Despite the massives swarms of drunken girls in cowboy hats.
