His fault. He's naive for not thinking that may happen, and should have stepped up to the occasion. Especially on that show. It isn't going to go away by saying "boring" or "Meh....It's getting old". If he has an opportunity to defend games on TV, then he should. Not be a whiny bitch because his big TV appearance didn't go his way.

I don't really see what could have been done, between the lack of oppurtunity to speak, and biased editing.

I wish I'd been the one invited to the show. I would have made that Columbine bitch shit her pants for being yesterday's news. I hate shit like this. Seems the Columbine kid made nice. Shouldn't have stopped reading after choking on my own saliva. That said, that show needs to be Jon Stewarted.1 What a lousy gaggle of cockgobblers.
Of course comments like that are the reason I'll never be invited to such a thing.

I would have rambled about the entire interview in my best Chris Walken impression. Editing is an impossibilty then.

I think walking was the right choice. Pretty clearly CNBC had a script, and they were going to run with it, never mind what the people they invited had to say.

My original response was going to be nothing but "/thearistocrats" But really there's no set of words for how angry I am at the state of the media. There's just....goddamn fucking hypocritical assgoblin nutgobbling munchcake shitbags. Just anger. At both sides, the gaming media for following it and allowing it to be newsworthy and the real media for giving a flying rats ass. DON'T YOU HAVE CELEBRITIES TO STALK?
FUCK.

The media is born to twist stuff according to their agenda or to create controversy to draw viewers (and hence more ads). Interviewees are the flour of which these "news" are baked. The journalists have so little feedback in their ivory towers they think they can define the truth beforehand - and sadly too often get away with it. So questions and editing are done to enforce a predefined theme and conclusion, regardless of the actual input from the people interviewed. People in general need to become more critical toward their sources of information.

I'd argue, as I have indirectly in a couple of other threads, that the media isn't trying to create controversy, they are trying to avoid it by feeding us the same canned script nover and over again. They fear to face the real issues of sex and violence in our culture because they would lose advertisers, and therefore their jobs. They are a bunch of frightened hucksters.

I'm actually totally with Schild on this. At least 83 died in Egypt last night, and CNN/MSNBC/CBS shows that one missing girl day: 30something, and how to make sure you dog doesn't get ticks this summer.

I'll leave off the irresponsibility of the media for another day, too huge a topic for a saturday.
But the misinformation and propaganda being catapulted* has a very real and troubling effect on America. Half of my coworkers have taken a completely ignorant stance on 'hot coffee', and luckily I'm around to set the record straight. Many still hold opposing opinions, but I'm cool with that if it's based in the facts. I think of the millions of americans who might not work with an intelligent gamer. Then I shoot a bunny**.
* My favorite GWB quote evar was, of course, on the Stewart show: "Sometimes ya gotta catapult the propaganda!" He was asking the crowd how many times he'd have to repeat the phrase 'your retirement is safe' until they believed him.
** Not an actual bunny, it's slang for farting. No bunnies were hurt in the contemplation of the ignorance of the general public.

It'll all bubble under when the next story du jour crops up. Cable news media has an attention span of ... bzzzt missed it. And I've heard office gossip that has a greater impact on society. Cable news shows pretty much preach to their respective choirs. That's how they sell advertising.

People in general need to become more critical toward their sources of information.
People in general are stupid. The Media is a business just like making games, so people basically get the media they deserve and most people prefer fake news they agree with to the risk of hearing opposing views. There's plenty of good journalism avaliable but just like anything else of quality, you mighyt have to do some work to find it, but just like you guys are sick to death of The Media doing this and doing that, I'm tired of you people generalizing abouth The Media. You talking as if The Media is all the same is just as illinformed as some journalist not getting the whole Hot Coffee deal. Stupid lazy people generalize and a lot of media is about making money with a minimum of effort and expense, which breeds stupid lazy people.

I expect more from major outlets, and I think anything produced by FOX/ABC/NBC/CBS/CNN qualifies as a major outlet, and I'm seeing very little of it from any of them. One of the problems we have in gaming is the lack of regular, quality, independant, critical journalistic review of games. That's very annoying in the gaming industry. In a democracy, that's potentially fatal.
When the editor of a gaming site walks off a major media production, I expect it to be because he is a whiny shit. For him to be right is appalling.
I agree there is good journalism out there. That the system we have forces you to hunt for it, rather than bringing it out, is a real problem.
Nice avatar, BTW.

What gets me about mainstream media is that it's not even news a lot of the time. One funny example was the pope thing, when they were all glued to monitors of the vatican chimney. "Hmm..I think the smoke is black...no wait, it's white..." Listen, I can speculate like anyone else, I don't need some talking head who is supposed to be delivering news to do so. More recently it was the scotus nomination guessing or reading fucking blogs. Inane, insane. Not news. I still like British media and NPR. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting is run by a Bush shill who is demanding programming move politically right to fit our nation's values due to the outcomes of recent elections. I'd keep a pretty critical ear on NPR. I kinda like NHK, but I find news outlets overall rather shoddy at actually delivering important and relevent news.

One of the problems we have in gaming is the lack of regular, quality, independant, critical journalistic review of games. Gaming is an infantile industry. I don't mean that in the age sense. It's all people patting each other on the back or academic types writing papers on the EQ economy. (If you want a comparison in baseball that's like the ex-player commentators and the Sabremetric goons) Gaming is aimed at young males (even if the actual playing audience is getting older) and a lot of gaming "journalism" is young males as well. Part of that is stigma of working for a gaming magazine. (And part of that stigma is deserved - chicken and egg problem that comic books had for years and still have to some extent) Most game journalism is just garbage. I remember reading through some EGMs from a couple of years ago. It has this desparate-hipster attitude going. Be like Maxim, be "irreverent", get in some zings - maybe say a bit about the game.

Most game journalism is just garbage. I remember reading through some EGMs from a couple of years ago. It has this desparate-hipster attitude going. Be like Maxim, be "irreverent", get in some zings - maybe say a bit about the game. One of the big problems is that 99.9999% of the games out there don't need more than 1 to 3 paragraphs to be given a SOLID review. More than that and you get into spoiler territory or worse, treating your readers like babies by trying to explain the nuances of an item system. That's something to be discovered, not something for a review. It's why the reviews on f13 have gotten shorter. It's better to get accross the visceral than try to convince you on something you already may or may not have had an opinion on. If we can't do that in 3 paragraphs, we're not doing our job right. When gaming reviews get into the 4-6 page territory it's when people start reading the first and last paragraph and the score. That said, 1-1.5 pages (as said before 1-3 solid paragraphs) is really a sweet spot. Commentary is a little different though...

Enlighten us, please. Surprisingly, I can't find any articles on it. Mind you it happened back in the days before the Interwebnet. It was one of the first situations I remember hearing about like this. Norris was invited on to Donahue to talk about Martial Arts or something, and as he walks out on stage he realizes that the entire topic of the show is actually violent movies currupting children, and it was all just a ruse to get him out there so Phil could attack him.. I was hoping I'd find an article with more details, as I barely remember it. I do remember thinking that Donahue was a douche at the time. Or likely something similar, as I don't think i knew what a douche was at that age.

See, he handled it wrong. Instead of poncing off like some prissy fairy, what he should have done is insult the host. At every fucking opportunity. And if the host starts cutting him off, fuck him, go louder. Make them cut your mike off. Just go buck fucking wild on the bitches and give them nothing useable or editable. Start tossing in the words cockwrangler every once in a while. Make up words on the spot. If they mute your mike, go lean into the hosts chest where his mike is cleverly placed and talk into his mike.
If the show's producers have decided they want edgy and irreverent, GIVE IT TO THEM DIRECTLY IN THEIR OVERLUBED ASSES.
