Teaching group to consider banning word "fail"

2 hours, 27 minutes ago

LONDON (Reuters) - The word "fail" should be banned from use in classrooms and replaced with the phrase "deferred success" to avoid demoralising pupils, a group of teachers has proposed.

Members of the Professional Association of Teachers (PAT) argue that telling pupils they have failed can put them off learning for life.

A spokesman for the group said it wanted to avoid labelling children. "We recognise that children do not necessarily achieve success first time," he said.

"But I recognise that we can't just strike a word from the dictionary," he said.

The PAT said it would debate the proposal at a conference next week.

Make the final exam really simple. Any student that can't explain what "deferred success" means, fails.

They can also have a 'deferred career' in which they push a broom around and wish they had studied more in school.

I'm not surprised.  The quest to avoid hurting students feelings and to continually bolster their confidence in artificial ways has become extremely prevalent in the school system.

For example, my husband is a high school swimming official, and for the diving portion of meets, they are not allowed to say that a student failed a dive, instead it is an "unsuccessful attempt."  Must not give the little childers bad feelings for fucking up, I guess.

Of course, that crap amuses me almost as much as the swimmer who gets disqualified for forgetting to take out off a piece of jewelry, since they are not allowed to wear anything in the water unless it's a medalert item, and that has to be taped to the skin.  Of course, the officials can't say anything prior to the event start, and they allow the event to finish before handing out the DQ, something I find beautifully cruel in a way.

The funny thing is when the students do stuff like that at a sectional or state meet and then cry and whine because they got DQ'd when those rules have been in place the whole season and for years actually.  Few years ago, the parents of some little twit sued to allow their daughter to redo a dive she was DQed for because she didn't take her hair scrunchy off her wrist (or put it back in her hair) and did a dive with it on.  This happened at a sectional meet and she didn't advance, so Daddy the lawyer sued to allow her to redo her dive prior to the rest of the state meet diving.  Can't remember what happened off the top of my head, but gods forbid the little twit actually suck the consequences of her actions.

What ever happened to personal responsibility and stuff like that?

There's no clause of personal responsibility in the Constitution.  Therefore, Personal Responsibility and consequence for your actions are unconstitutional.

Fuck these god damned teachers and their purple pens, deferred success, and gold stars for effort.   When we become a second and then third world nation and everone wonders why, let's remember their valiant efforts at... deferring the success of America.

The past cannot be changed. The future is yet within your power.

It's not just schools -- e.g. the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences changed their wording from "and the winner is" to "and the Oscar goes to".

Because failure is so much less painful when the people I respect and love lie to me about it.

This is the kind of crap that pisses me off. Reminds of those "Fun and Fair" sport groups where they don't keep score. Bullshit. Competition is a good thing. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. Sometime you crush the other team and sometimes you get your ass handed to you. You learn have to be a good winner (don't be an ass and rub it in to the losing team). You learn how to deal with losing (say good game and then go practice so you can beat them next time). Sometimes you might not be the best and you don't get a ton of playing time. When I started playing soccer in 4th grade, I sucked and was subbed in and out for the better players who needed a breather. I didn't like that so I  practiced and got better, and in a few years was a starter playing most of the game. I know I sound like my dad but competition helps prepare you for real life.

Whereas in school I decided I didn't like failing and instead decided to revel in fucking up in areas where I had to actually put effort in to succeed (sports and languages, later maths). I didn't like failing but I think being told I had screwed up did actually accomplish some of that fabled character building. I learned to stop getting upset everytime someone told me I'd screwed up and was lazy. No being told I had failed, etc didn't inspire me to try harder and succeed but I still think it did me a lot of good.

Fuck those people who think children shouldn't fail and should spend games lessons playing toss the welly.
