Interesting ... My gf has a degree in Russian, so she can too. (Weird choice of degree if you ask me, but whatever).

Now she wants to go to Bulgaria for our next vacation and then travel to Romania to see Dracula's Castle. She even wanted to do it on Halloween!  shocked

If you get the chance, go see the Bulgarian Women's Choir. They are amazing, epic even, and you will weep. I'm not exaggerating.

If you can read Dostoevsky in the original, then I envy you.

I can't agree enough.  With gusto.

He's not even a Dan Brown. I'm sorry but the fame that comes from literary circle jerks gets on my nerves. Just because classes require you to read shit doesn't mean it's good. And reading it for pleasure is just horrid.

Wow. Not even Notes From the Underground? The man is a giant. I don't even have to defend him here.

Anyways, I'm going to have to put this on my list too:

I love.....Reading Dostoevsky for pleasure.

in Russian, 'Xymox' is pronounced "KHOOtukh" (or khoo TOKH, depending on where an accent may be). I never got into Dostoevsky, personally, but it might be because it always felt gratuitous. We had to read The Stranger, though (Camus), which I enjoyed heartily.

My most vivid memories of high school Russian were of a television comedy where this robot just walks around saying, "it's the robot. it's the river. it's the bridge." (eta robut. eta reka. eta most.) That, and a very poorly-done version of Winnie the Pooh (veenee pookh).

Bleah. I had to read that in 10th grade and hated it. I may try to read it again someday to see if it is any better with an adult worldview.

I love me some Camus. Though not as much as some Sartre.

I love the fact that I went to Leningrad and ate bucketload of Beluga, sold my jeans for vodka and exchanged a half-used deoderant for a Red Army greatcoat before it all went to hell and they renamed the city and whatnot.

Be on the lookout for a Dane with no trousers wearing a large coat, drunk and smelling of BO and Fish.

That'd be Hanzii.
